Title: Need Help, Education & Advice
Post by: MikeBjerum on June 05, 2009, 07:07:48 AM
I'm am so out of touch that out kids try to deny my existence.  I am so out of touch with modern electronics my boss is ready to slap me upside the head with the blackberry he got us all for work and I can answer and call out with, but that's about it ...

With a few long trips coming up I'm thinking of changing my style of enjoying my own voice in my empty head and getting an mp3 player so I can listen to pod casts on the road.  However, I know nothing about them, and after our experience last fall of buying our first tv in nearly 30 years I do not want to ask one more pimply faced kindergartner for advice on electronics.

HELP!!!

Of course I'm asking this just before I leave for a busy weekend, so a lot of stuff may not get read until late Sunday night.

iPod.

I've had one for a few years, and it goes everywhere with me. I got the original 60G video one, and I have yet to fill it even half way - including videos and almost 800 podcasts, plus a few thousand songs.

And it doubles as a disk drive if you want it too.

Get a pimply faced 8th grader (kindergartners don't have pimples) to explain that last comment to you . . .   ;D

YAY  something I know a lot about

I would have to say iPod

especially  iPod Touch as you can also load video,   get some very cool extra add on's apps  via the App Store

if you want to go all out get the iPhone    ( wait though   new model being  might be announced soon ;)

the interface is very simple to use
my self I have the iPhone 3G  and find it soo easy to use,

if it is just for Podcasts,  and Music,  then look at the iPod Nano,   as it has a screen to work out what you are listing too and will do exactly what you want.

I'm no help Mike.....I'm sitting here looking at a calculator that I've had since 1985!  Don't get me wrong, I could figure it out but, I don't want too!    ;D  Somewhere I still have a slide rule as well!

Don't ask me.  I had a 'wing' that would do anything, music, vids, voice recognition, internet, etc.   I gave it to my Son and got a simple flip phone!

The only thing I can say about ipod I learned from my son.  He doesn't like them because it limits the type of music files you can download and play.

Well Phil is the def EXPERT in this area.. Speaking from a point of view that is familiar to the Non-tech.. Not I, I might add.. I would probably go with something a little less overwhelming than a iTouch or iPhone since you already have a Blackberry.

I personally have the 32g iTouch and I love it but I'm a bit of a TechGeek.  I had a SanDisk Sansa View as my first high end MP3 player and it was alright but when the touches came out I upgraded to Apple and won't look back.  The apple products are so much more stable than anything else that I have found but then again.  I have limited experience with the Microsoft Zune and some of the other mp3 players out there.

So IMO I would look at a iPod Classic as so called reasons being they are simple to use plays music and after some experience will do video.  (Not as nice as the iTouch but it is SIMPLE TO USE)  After you get use to the Classic later on down the road maybe a Touch or Phone.

If you need any Blackberry tips I have one of those as well too.. Mine is the Nextel Version (as soon as Sprint/Nextel has an iPhone I will have one of those)

GOOD LUCK and Stay Simple

HAZ is right on the files.. Most of the time iTunes will convert the music for you to AAC format.  I don't have much of a problem with music though.  All of mine is boughten either by me or I have the CD in hand and rip it to the computer.  So normally not a problem. (Problems are with the "Pirated" music. Since I had a Fire Department computer stayed away from that)

As for listening to Pod casts though.  Apple is the way to go since they have the corner on i"Pod"casts.  My parents have a Sansa View and dad is always calling me and asking me questions on how to get the NPR "Car Talk" Podcast into WMA

not any more

firstly    if bringing in files ( this has always been the case)  you can change the settings for importing from the default setting AAC  to MP3 or lossless

yes they don't take WMA  files  however they are easy to convert  and on winblows iTunes it can convert them for you.

now with the itunes store they have changed it  with new deals done with record companies

all the music on  iTunes  are all free of burn limits and digital rights management (DRM). So the music you buy will play on iPod, Apple TV, all Mac and Windows computers, and many other digital music players.

I don't buy Apple products.  I use an MP3.  Down load my favorite CDs to my  computer then from the computer to the MP3 player.  I don't have to screw with Itune.  Don't have to pay again for what I already own.  If I like a musician I buy his CD.  Rotate the list whenever I get tired of what is there.  My little MP3 holds dozens of albums and I do not have to deal with the money grubbing jackasses at Apple.

I use windows and iTunes.. You can still buy the cd from the store and bring it into iTunes.. I just found that with my sansa and I had a rio mp3 player that it would double the music all of the time during the sync.  I fought it figured it out and it kept reverting back to the old settings.  You don't have to buy the music from iTunes but I mostly buy from itunes now just cause of the convience of it.  You can burn still burn a cd from itunes with the purchased music.

i-phone would be a waste of money where he lives.  GSM service (AT+T) is spotty at best for phone service, so paying the extra money for the i-phone would be a waste.

I have the solution. It's called the "radio". It's what I personally use and swear by. The best thing........it's FREE.

Call me whatever you want, but I think all the emphasis on these modern gadgets is nothing but a waste of time and money. I (reluctantly) have a cell phone that all it does is make calls, no text, no internet, no coffee maker, no space shuttle launching pad. My computer is connected to wires coming out of the wall of my house, and if I want to use it, I have to stay in one place.

I guess I'm just not a techno junkie. ;)

iPod! The others don't add up. Even when the "iPod killer" Microsoft Zune came out, it was easy to predict which would really fail.

Pretty much the entire Apple line of iPods are going to be updated soon. If you don't care about having the latest and greatest, than get whatever you like. I use an 80gb Classic, that is a couple of years old. My wife just got a new Nano and loves it (it replaced a pretty old 2nd gen iPod).  It's great for taking on the plane and light enough that working out with it in a case with a clip isn't out of the question - they make an armband case too. It slips in a shirt pocket well.

We have a lot of other iPod variations as well. Shuffles are only great for the treadmill. Aside from the shuffle, the entire iPod line will now play video.

This can help with buying cycles:

Apple also has a link for refurbished iPods. Usually returns that couldn't be sold as new.:

My pick is Sandisk Sansa, and I'll tell you why.  Sounds like someone like you needs to cut out all the bullcrap, you plug this in and go to the Windows Media player you already use, click 'Sync', and your done.  No iTunes, or any of that razzmatazz. I've used iPods, Zunes, and every thing else, and the Sansa are probably the most strait forward.  This one I linked to will hold about a thousand songs, if you got more than that then get an iPod or Zune, if not don't get to fancy.  Also, the Sansa got actual buttons rather than the iPod touchiness thing, I've never seen a person of...er...great maturity that could navigate with the touch pads.  Software installs aren't necessary, and you've also got a built in FM tuner.

M did mention that he wanted to listen to Podcasts.  The easiest way to do that is with apple.  I am personally an IBM based person.  The iPod however has taken the mp3 player to the next level though.  Like tt said also.. The Blackberry will do what you want.  The podcasts have to be downloaded and converted to mp3's is all.  It can be done but much easier with apple.

Did this forum go from guns to tech?  What the hell???  This topic is almost as bad as a what caliber to carry or which gun for _______?

Whew.. Just try a few out.. Go to best buy Store brand XX whatever .. make sure they have live display models there and ask lots of questions!!

Radio doesn't do much on a plane, or in the middle of the desert. Also. it's not free. Someone has to pay. A sponsor pays for the programming and the listener pays by having to listen to what the sponsor wants to tell you. There are also "free" programs that you can dl and load on a digital audio player - like Michael Bane's podcasts.

You guys are a lot of help!

However, I've been busy at a Lions pancake feed most of the day, I'm leaving the office early, and I'm headin to Omaha!

A few notes based on my quick browse (I will read Sunday night when I get home):

The dinglebarry is the bossman's and I don't want my personal stuff at his whim;
I love 8 tracks, but the match book that keeps the cart tight flies out on the motorcycle;
I might have forgotten to mention - most of this is for motorcycle riding.  I can handle a couple hundred miles of listening to myself, but 15K is beyond my tolerance level!

Thanks!

Will be back after the weekend ... Please behave, so my recliner is available for me in the "corner"  ;)

HELP!!!

Of course I'm asking this just before I leave for a busy weekend, so a lot of stuff may not get read until late Sunday night.

I'll help you out on this one.  I've got one I'll give you in the box when you get to USSA next week.  You won't owe me a dime.  It's a 1GB mp3 player new in the plastic.  Just one catch, you've got to post a picture of it...sort of like MB wearing his Canon safe lock on his neck.

This aside, and especially if you need one for the drive, buy something that will play mp3 and wma files with an FM player in it.  wma files sound better, take a bit more space, but for music seem better than mp3.  I have an old 256MB Creative player that does the mp3 and wma files with FM...it pulls apart (AAA battery 1/2, player the other 1/2) and the player plugs directly into a USB port...really handy and you don't have to remember cords.  You ougtha do real well for way under 100 bucks.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10652330#ProductDetail (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10652330#ProductDetail) No radio, but 50 bucks and does all the other stuff you really need with 4 gb.  But then, I usually just put the podcasts on a CD-R disc and use that.....

http://www.walmart.com/iRiver-8GB-MP3-Player-E100/ip/10755900 (http://www.walmart.com/iRiver-8GB-MP3-Player-E100/ip/10755900)  I like this one a little better for 70 bucks, it has twice the storage at 8gb but also has a micro SD card slot.

Do you want me to drop a few podcasts on that mp3 player for you?

I got my feet wet with the iPod Nano (3rd gen).   I wanted it for several things.   Pictures being primary.  Some one asks about the kids...out comes the iPod.   About the grandkids....out comes the iPod.....ask about shooting........out comes the iPod.  I have personal pictures, gun porn, ham radio stuff, pictures of my show and technical stuff on there.

The iTouch has a bigger screen but this was a way to try out the technology.

Music and pod casts were second and I really don't use it that much.   I did at first but not so much....I'm not a big music "listener".   I do listen to some podcasts when I mow the lawn, but that's only once a week during the summer.  If I traveled more I'd probably listen more.

My biggest disappointment is the inability to store any meaningful size documents or databases.  I wanted to hold a complete listing of hams in GA, but the documents on the Nano are pretty limited in size.

My next move will be an iTouch.   I can use the bigger screen and the many applications.  Maybe for Christmas
