Title: GSSF
Post by: Ping on June 05, 2009, 09:18:34 PM
Just trying to see how many DRTV folks are involved with the Glock Sport Shooting Foundation. Has anyone ever participated in one of their shooting events and how did you like it?

You know Ping, there are members here that are going to pour a "huge" glass of Kool-Aid, and tell you all about it. ;)

I'll take my M+P to the corner now,..  8)

I used to go regularly when I lived in FLA. very well run with lots of different skill levels, always had armorers on site to help and sell parts at reduced prices as well as cheap ammo. Great fun I miss it. I sold my Glock but the closest event to me is in Ga. so its too far.

Ping, my home club has been hosting these matches since 1991 or 92, I shot in most of them, and range officered as well.

It is well run, simple, yet challenging.

I really like the class system, it allows no sandbagging!!!! You are classed after the match, not before. The exception is a Master Glock shooter, once one, always one, and you can't win guns anymore.

The classing based on 100 shooters, to make it simple, everybody shoots heads up and then after the match, if you come in.

1 - 24th A class
25 - 49  B class
50 - 74  C class
75 - 100 D class

If I remember right 1st in your class - New Glock
2nd 100 bucks
3rd  75.00
4th and 5th 50.00
6th - 10th  25.00

There is also High senior, High lady, High law enforcement, High junior.
Also classes for compact,subcompact, competition models  34, 35, 24c 17l and unlimited.

But the match is built around 1st time competitors, If you have a Glock and 2 magazines, you can play, no holster, no mag pouches needed, a bag to carry your pistol and ammo around in is recommended. A couple of extra mags makes the loading process easier on the events like the falling plates. Ear and eye protection and your good to go.

We usually have 300 - 400 competitors over 2 days. Once you shoot your 1st stage your usually done in under 2 hrs.

In the past Glock donated 3 guns to the club, We had an RO drawing, you got your name in the hat twice for each day you worked, and We raffled the 3rd off for the club coffers. All 4 of my Glocks I won in the RO drawings. ;D

If you've never shot competition or have a friend who has not, it's a good way to do it and not feel out equipmented.

I've worked our local event twice, and competed once.

The match uses Steel Challenge -like stages, and has accuracy being much more important than speed.  Event is designed for first time shooters.  Very low stress.  Safety is paramount.  I've see a lot of new Glock owners shoot their first match at a GSSF match.  In some cases I expect it's the first time they've shot their Glock, bought for urban home/apt defense.  Glock armorer on-site in case any adjustments need to be done.  You can even warm up and practice stages before you shoot them for real.

Most likely I'd shoot it this year.
