Title: Which 10/22 ?
Post by: Indy5000 on October 03, 2007, 03:28:11 PM
I've been wanting to get a Ruger 10/22 to pair with my mid-1980s Stainless MarkII with Bull Barrel.  At first glance I kind of like the synthetic stock with the stainless as it pairs well with my Mark II.  But, maybe one of the target models would be a better choice.  The target model comes in either stainless or blued.  Any preference there?  Right now I'm just getting back into shooting after a long time out of the sport.  I'd love to be able to shoot my .22s in events like the Ruger Rim Fire Challenge but I haven't looked for similar events in Texas.  Is there a particular model that is a better choice for possible future upgrades from the likes of Tactical Solutions?

Any input will be greatly appreciate.

I realize the DRTV "Give away gun" would easily solve my problem.  ;) :D ;D

I used to be a big fan in wood and blue.  However, as I age I like stainless and synthetic more and more.  S & S will never compare to wood and blue for beauty, but durability, ease of care and the total lack of fear of hunting and shooting in less than bluebird days is great.

As each year goes by I get pickier and pickier about things like trigger pull, fine sights, and repeatability.  I would like to say it is all about maturing in my shooting (aging eyes requiring the gun to do more), but I think it has more to do with poor decisions made in trying to save a few pennies on "utility guns" in the past.  Today I will spend twice as much to get a good gun that will out preform me rather than buying low price and trying to figure out what is wrong with what I'm doing.

Good luck on the search.

Hey maybe you'll win Michael's 10/22.  It looks pretty sweet!

Indy;
If you happen to be of the same degree of "Lucky" ness as Me you will need to buy your 10-22. For Christmas last year My son bought for his son a new standard blued / tree wood stocked thin barrel 10-22. I have had a limited exposure to them and was not thinking "tack driver" but kept an open mind. We had a little trouble coming up with a mount but settled for a see thru Leupold mount and an inexpensive 4 power 1 inch scope with fairly good optics but let me stress "Inexpensive" To my surprise and to the pleasant surprise of my grandson who is 8 years old, 5 shots from a bench rest at 50 yards will go into less than 1/2 inch. The gun is a tack driving standard model. Don't rule out a standard 10-22 or a stainless barreled wood stocked one as they can be very accurate and unless you are planning on serious competition that is probably all that is necessary. Have fun looking for and buying and especially shooting your gun , and share the sport with a kid, they are our future! :) :)

I have this gun and love it it is light and fast! I think it is the best bang for the buck but you must put a scope of some kind on it. I have a Eotech on mine

Thank you all for the great input.

wakatomika creek: I didn't mention it but part of the process is for my brother and I to get my nieces out to the range more.

Hazcat: I had looked online at the US Shooting version with the laminated stock.  I will try to find locally so I can check it out.  That might be be the best bang for the buck.  I already intended to put some kind of optic on what I buy so that would be great.

Indy, I sent you a link via priveta message that will help you find a dealer.  But just in case here it is again.

if i wanted something for kids to shoot i would towards a 10/22 with a synthetic stock and a stainless barrel. no wood to nick and stainless holds up better . depending on the size of the youngster the junior sized 10/22 or even a pink cricket might be what your looking for.

a marlin in synthetic and stainless is also a nice shooter
and dont forget a remington .22lt semi auto

as for that US shooting gun i probably wont shoot mine, its staying in the box with the leupold scope as a collectors piece. they're only making 5000. gun and scope run around 830.00

if your looking for a real bargain take a look at the Talo 10/22 target runs around 375.00 which seems to be a really decent deal in my opinion. synthetic adjustable stock , ss bull barrel with ruger guts

happy shopping !

I thought I'd take a minute to dig this up from the past and thank everyone again for their input.  I ended up getting a Ruger 10/22 Stainless with the synthetic stock from Sportsman's Warehouse.  I purchased the TSR200 Adjustable Aperture Sight set from http://www.tech-sights.com/.  I also upgraded to the Volquartsen bolt release and extended mag release.  I'm still trying to decide the best way to mount a sling.  It's been fun working on my rifle skills with the iron sights.  I'm hoping this will translate over if I get an AR or other battle rifle someday.

Additionally, we had fun building up my brother's old wood stock 10/22.  We installed the Tapco adjustable stock, Volquartsen bolt release and extended mag release and topped it off with an inexpensive BSA Red Dot Optic.  I have to admit I like the feel of the pistol grip and the adjustability of the stock.  It does raise a few eye brows though.  The un-washed masses think it's an evil assault rifle.  ::)  I guess the 25 round Butler Creek magazine doesn' help. ;D

Congratulations!! I too own the S & S 10/22. Large scope and the thirty round mags, do make it look pretty tough.

Shoots great, and hope you have years of reliable shooting with it.

Congrats on the new 10/22!

I have two.  One, an OLD sporter with the beavertail forend that is Jerry Miculek fast.  Light crisp trigger and superbly accurate.  Also have one of the HB 10/22's that I bought back in 1998.  I put a Leupold 2x7 RF scope on it and it is capable of one-hole accuracy out of the box.

Good call.  You really can't go wrong with ANY Ruger 10/22.  Everyone should have at least one!  We may be getting our third since my son wants a new sporter for his first rifle.

How about one like this:

Congrats on getting a 10/22 Indy5000. The beauty of them is that anyone can play with that receiver and make it anything they want. Then if you want to change it around no problems! The Tech Sights are great, but toss in a VQ hammer, and consider an aftermarket bbl and your accuracy potential will increase drastically. ;)
