Title: Shooting Gallery Named Official TV Show of the 2009 Steel Challenge
Post by: Pathfinder on June 17, 2009, 09:09:04 AM
Hot off the "press" from today's Shooting Wire:

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Washington - Since 2003 the Steel Challenge has reached the homes of millions of viewers through coverage on the Outdoor Channel's hit show, Shooting Gallery hosted by Michael Bane, and 2009 will be no exception as the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA) has again named Shooting Gallery the official television show of the 2009 Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships.

"We are proud of our longstanding relationship with the Steel Challenge and honored to once again be their official television show. For the past six years Shooting Gallery viewers have had a front row seat to the fascinating world of Speed Shooting and what is one of the most important shooting matches on the planet," said Michael Bane, producer and host of Shooting Gallery.

Shooting Gallery's coverage has helped grow the match considerably over the past six years. Starting with the 2003 season when Shooting Gallery followed world-class shooter Todd Jarrett every step of the way through his run at the title, host Michael Bane has found new and interesting ways to present the shooting sports to outsiders. His expert commentary and in-depth analysis of the competition has given the uninitiated an insider's look at the Steel Challenge.

"Shooting Gallery has brought the Steel Challenge and the sport of Speed Shooting to millions of viewers and has made heroes of those elite few who have claimed the title of World's Fastest. We deeply appreciate the continued support the Outdoor Channel and Shooting Gallery in particular have given to the Steel Challenge and look forward to working with them to make the 2009 match the biggest ever," said Dave Thomas, Executive Director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association which owns the Steel Challenge and SCSA.

Shooting Gallery is television's premier shooting show reaching over one million dedicated weekly viewers covering the broad range of topics important to sportsmen.

Are we supposed to be suprised?  I mean what other show/producer/host has the technical know how/competition background/following/access to competetors/etc.?

Or look at it this way "Steel Challenge had to decide between the best and the rest" so...........who would you choose?  ;)

. . . Michael Bane has found new and interesting ways to present the shooting sports to outsiders. His expert commentary and in-depth analysis of the competition has given the uninitiated an insider's look at the Steel Challenge . . . .

This is so true.  Until a few years ago, I was a total outsider to the shooting sports and it had never crossed my mind how much fun this stuff could be.  Thanks MB for bringing outsiders into the know!

They left out the part about looking for ways to make shooting sports more spectator friendly which as he discussed in podcasts and his blog, is necessary to increasing their growth.

Thanks for all you do MB  ;D

USPSA has come up with a Scholastic Steel Challenge Shooting Association to try to hook new kids into shooting also.

About the only other way I know of to make the Steel Challenge more spectator friendly is to outfit a top shooter or two with a hatcam.

Just click the link below in my signature line.

Now, granted, Michael Bane has said before that he tried that once, with Todd Jarret, but it didn't pan out all that well.  I think all the other top shooters distanced themselves once they found out Todd was on a hot mike the whole day.

 ;D  LOL!

Thanks for all that you do.

The Steel Challenge is going to have a lot more meaning after actually attending a shoot and walking around with the pros and watching them shoot and hearing their banter.

It's good to see pros out there picking up poppers and plates for an amateur that's on their team or for the other pros.  I don't know what I thought...but I didn't expect to see people like Julie Goloski, Dave Sevigny, Erik Lund or Angus Hobdell sweating in the hot sun setting up the range for the next guy....

If you haven't, you really need to attend a shoot and see the pros in action.

Like Rastus said, I explained to our future son-in-law (avid golf nut) that shooting with Julie Goloski on your squad and having many others just a bay away or watching is like being in a foursome with the best in the world ... including Tiger Woods, taking batting practice with Kirby Puckett, or playing catch with Favre (Can't believe I said that one ... time for some lutefisk to clear the mind)!

Anyone that enjoys the sport owes it to themselves to go and do it.  No matter how bad I've ever done, no one has ever laughed at me (laughed with me, but never at).  Nothing like having Rob or Angus come up and give you a pointer when you screw up.

That right there says a lot about the gun culture as a whole. They (we) won't make fun of someone if they miss. Pointers are given. Advice is dispensed. Hardly ever will you hear a gun person say, "Well you did that all wrong, you should quit and go home."

The only time someone, like the people on here, get upset is over a safety rule. Which is exactly what is needed for those first learning to shot. But remember, get upset like a father with their child should. Not with anger but with knowledge and loving care. And always remember to explain to the less gun educated why such a thing is so bad.

I count myself lucky to be able to have influenced a lot of people in enjoying shooting, the same as many here have.
