The photo op was too good to be true. Healthcare providers trooped out of the White House and trumpeted their goal of saving $1.7 trillion of costs over the next decade in health spending. Now these drug companies, hospitals, insurance companies, medical device manufacturers, labor unions and doctors have laid out their plans in more detail.
And right there, in plain print, is the beginning of medical care rationing. Now that the cameras have been put away and the media is no longer watching, their secret emerges: They are going to cut medical costs by cutting medical care. Right now, they cite four targets. They plan to:
1. Cut diagnostic imaging tests like MRIs and CAT scans.
2. Reduce the use of antibiotics.
3. Perform fewer Caesarean sections.
4. Cut care for management of chronic back pain
These decisions will not be medical but financial. They will not be based on a doctor’s opinion of what his or her patient needs, but a bureaucrat’s and an accountant s opinion of what the new health care system can afford.
And you will not be able to bypass their rulings and pay for this care yourself. The rules laid down must be followed and private payments will not be permitted to override them. What we now call a private fee for service will metastasize into a bribe.
But this is just the very beginning of rationing. The total of health care spending now runs about $2.3 trillion a year in the United States. Over ten years, that’s likely to reach $30 trillion. So a cut of $1.7 trillion is a mere drop in the bucket.
More rationing is coming, and coming soon.
In our new book (coming out on June 23rd), "Catastrophe," we explain exactly what rationing will mean and what it has done to patient care in Canada.
It’s not a pretty picture and Obama will bring it here soon unless we stop him. Forewarned is forearmed!

Here we go. Looks like Americans will be pouring over the Mexican border for quality health care.

As someone with a potentially life-threatening chronic health issue, ObamaCare scares the hell out of me. At what point will keeping me alive become too costly for the gubmint to justify?

Taking your politics into consideration I bet they say "now". ;)

Ditto.....I'm a walking petri dish waiting for the Andromeda bacteria to take me. One or two days of missed medication and I'm a dead man!

Sounds like a nasty MRSA infection. I hope you sued their butts off and won!!!

Yes to MRSA and NO...nothing I could do about it. They make sure you sign enough mumbo jumbo legaleeze BS to prevent you from suing! In other words, "sh#t happens", you didn't die so have a nice day...!
I beat the original infection but have another that I'll fight the remainder of my days.

Mine is due to a heart that decided to malfunction one day. So, for the past 5-1/2 years the top half hasn't been working at all. Much like Tim, I have to take the drugs everyday to keep me alive.
HAZ:
I fear you are correct in your assessment of my perceived worth to the current administration.

Sorry to hear that. Stay positive, keep fighting and kick that infections tail.

Geez, we sound like Shaw, Dreyfus and Schieder in the movie Jaws..... ;D
Let's all take pictures of all of our scars! I have nearly three feet of them... ;D ;D ;D

I might as well weigh in, had a heart attack in '04, supposed to be taking about 5 different meds but haven't in 4 years and I'm still here so I guess I'm doing OK.

Damn straight. We might be a little older and a little busted up, but we're all still standing and I'll bet that all of us are still tough as Hell and meaner than a snake. Don't tread on us !!!

2 (maybe three) heart attacks (seems like I have one every 4 years, whether I need it or not ;D ), no meds (don't take em) and yes, I still smoke.

Yeah, Me to ::)

Yeah, Me to ::)
Finally got rid of the smokes about 3 years ago. I'm really happy when I see the cost of a pack today. I finally whipped them with Chantix. That stuff was a miracle. I still crave one from time to time but I know that if I take just one puff, I'll be back smokin' like a fiend. It's usually not too bad at all.
They sure went good with a cold beer and I'll bet that they are great with a Hazarita.

Wonder how Marshal is doing with the battle?

Yeah, Me to ::)
Took 70 days in the hospital and a constant morphine drip to get me to quit! Sure glad I did though, I didn't remember how good food could taste or how really nasty I smelled to my wife and kid..
I can breath, my lungs are clear, my heart is strong, I've got a fat ass and limp a bit...Life is Good! ;D

Smoking is the only bad habit I never acquired. So other than the strong heart thing, I'm right there with you.

Smoking, booze and women were my weakness.....I've given up smoking and booze!
A man DOES have his PRIORITIES! ;D ;D
And your right Shooter! Gotta shed a few pounds!

I've never have been a smoker, so I don't understand the addiction. Used to chew back in the day but haven't in 15 teen years. Still want to when I'm hunting,fishing or just out in the woods. :-\
Guess I'm lucky "knock on wood" not to have a battle with smoking or weight.
6' 180 and a good ticker too ;)

I once read that heroin addiction is easier to kick than nicotine addiction.

True according to ex Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.

He......(http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/Smoker.gif) failed miserably............
And for awhile I was bitching and saying little snide things about it.. but one morning I woke up.. decided that it must be hell to be that addicted to something that you just keep going back to it knowing it will kill you..... so I told him this.
" I am not going to mention or say anymore about your smoking. It's your lungs and your life. If you want to fill them with black shit until you die..then that's your call. All I ask is this.. " Don't stink and smell like smoke. Use lots of cologne all day long.. brush your teeth after each cigarette and make sure your life insurance is paid up.. All those things said.. Knock yourself out and enjoy each puff!"
I know, I know.......... I'm a hard cruel bitch.. ;D
-

Addiction rewires the brain. A heroin addict of a couple years may not be as rewired as a nicotine addict of a couple of decades. That said addict yourself to whatever you want, it ain't may place to tell you what to do, but I do think folks should inform each other of the consequences.
And that said, you old guys stop hogging all the health care!!! There ain't going to be enough to round soon. Who in their right mind would want to be a doctor and have their life run by scumbag politicians, regulations, and law suits, in an ever decreasing pay with ever increasing financial debt do to bull crap.

You quit smoking, now to quit morphine!!! ;D
I can't measure all of my scars. After my bypass (4 of 'em!) my Doctor told me I was the Franken-patient, as they couldn't use some of the veins they pulled and had to go digging elsewhere. I've got scars on 3 out of 4 limbs.
Never smoked, other than the experimentation in HS, a pipe to look studly in college, Antony y Cleopatra's cut in half after the Spaghetti Westerns came out - all of which smoking episodes lasted at most 4 weeks each. I did lose my Dad and younger sister to lung cancer though.
As for the fat ass, well, I have a bike in the garage I am going to ride any day now . . . . ::)
-
When it comes down to it, just remember you can't live forever, no matter how hard you try. ;) Rationed health care, addict or clean, rich or poor, every one in the ground or burnt to ashes is equal. Its all about the quality and company you live it in.

The coolest. 8) Ain't nothing wrong about taking it easy, shooting pool, drinking single barrel Tennessee whiskey, and smoking some good pipe tabbacy along with a good Nicaraguan cigar. 8)
