And he is from my town!!!! We had a Veterans Day celebration back in 04 I think, where he came to speak and have a meet and greet. He sat at that table and talked to people for HOURS!!! My boys were remarkably well behaved as we stood in line for at least 3 hours ourselves to say hi. (Don't ask! No I wouldn't ever do it again!) When we got up there Gunny Ermey was as happy and good natured as if he had just arrived a minute before, not hours and hundreds of people before. I was a fan before, I now am truly impressed with his ability to make people comfortable and at ease, even little 3 and 7 year old boys like mine were. He is a true Patriot and a fine Gentleman....... for a Marine. ;) :P

Do you have to work at it ? Or does it just come natural ?

In a USMC related newsletter I get ( www.grunt.com) There was recently a story posted by a guy who's son went through Boot Camp with the son of the Fathers Jr. DI, At the Graduation which they both attended he met up with R. Lee Ermey again.
R. Lee was medically retired as a Staff Sergeant, (E- 6 ) but because of his activities on behalf of the Corps, and promoting the Marine Corps he was promoted after retirement by the Commandant to Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) As he says, "The Commandant loves his ass ". ;D

How could you not? Honestly, army marine rivalry aside, Ermey is what all of us think an American NCO should be. He truly is inspirational, and I think that only a part of it is an act. The guy seems completely genuine. The only better, and funnier in a very twisted way, example of an NCO I've seen (not counting the ones who trained me becase they are in a seperate category) was watching BBC coverage of Afghanistan. They had an imbed with a satellite camera phone with a squad of Tommies who were in CQB with the Taliban. The camera was jerking, rounds were popping off, and then some one shouts "They're coming"! At which point, a voice that could only belong to a British seargant major (think straight out of Zulu) bellows crisply, "Right! Fix bayonets!" At which point, accompanied by incoming rounds and the changing of mags and the snick of bayonets, we hear our intrepid camera man mutter, "Sweet Christ". Followed immediately by the polite, and very upper crust sounding, query, "Is any one using that rifle"? ;D The footage stopped and I don't know how the story ended, except that the Brits took zero losses and the Taliban had a bad day, but I will always remember the tone of voice the seargant had. You could almost hear someone singing The Lads of Harlech in the backround. So here is to R. Lee and that Brit.

Back in the day you could not be a British NCO if you did not have gray hair
-
I should have included this with original post. I think the Gunny and that Brit would approve. ;D

Gunny rocks. Very funny video. Now we know what his major malfunction is.

Apropos of nothing other than FQ mentioned Afghanistan, here's a Fox news video that I ran across. Similar to the one from a Spectre, but this was shot from an Apache.

There is no army/marine rivalry. There are two types of soldiers...........marines and those who wish they were.
-
My apologies gentlemen, but I do believe that air superiority is the key. The Air Force will bomb them into sumbission. Make safe for the Marines and Troopers to travel. ;D

Worked REAL well on Germany. their production INCREASED while we bombed the crap out of them, AND they never stopped producing consumer goods. CAS is great but Strategic bombing is basically a waste of resources.

And here, for once Tom and I agree. We may disagree on who's tougher in the mud, but we do agree that that's where real soldiers (and marines) fight. Of course, the marines DO have their own air units, which makes it a lot simpler and safer to call in an airstrike. Pansies! ;D ;D ;D;D
