Mother of boy trampled by bull: 'It was nobody's fault'

LONGMONT, Colo. — The mother of a 12-year-old boy who died Sunday after being thrown off a bull during the Longmont Elks Little Britches Rodeo said her son loved riding bulls and she cherishes the joy he experienced competing with his 10-year-old brother.

Richard Wayde Hamar, of Yuma, was riding a bull during the Little Britches competition about 11 a.m. when the bull threw him off and stomped on his chest and stomach, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. He was wearing a helmet and vest, said his mother, Angie Hamar, who was in the audience with her husband, Mitch Hamar, and their younger son, Zach Hamar.

"It was nobody's fault," Angie Hamar said. "It could have happened on a horse as easily as it did riding his bull."

Wayde and Zach have competed in rodeos for much of their lives, Hamar said.

"That's what that kid lived to do," his mother said.

Despite Sunday's tragic accident, Hamar said, she wouldn't have done anything different.

"You can't keep your kids locked up in a closet," she said. "There are some kids who take motocross racing, and we take our kids rodeo riding."

Wayde's brother Zach is having a "hard time" after watching his brother's accident, Hamar said. But, she said, he still wants to compete in the National Little Britches Finals at the end of July in Peublo.

"There are two events that he was partners with his brother," she said. "It's going to be really hard."

Longmont Emergency Unit paramedics were at Sunday's event in Longmont and provided medical care to Wayde until he could be taken to Longmont United Hospital. He died from his injuries a few hours later.

In its fifth year, the two-day rodeo event is for children ages 8 to 18 and includes bull riding and calf roping.

"We just want to make sure nothing negative is said about the sport of rodeo or bull riding," Hamar said.

My little cousin, who ain't so little any more, has been riding since he could walk.  Every penny he won for a while his parents put strait into safety gear.  He's out grown the sport but while there he took his fair share of bumps and injuries.  Terribly unfortunate, but like the lady said, any sport or activity has its risk.  I've been taken to the hospital strait from the practice field during football on a couple of occasions, and I've seen a kid drop dead during practice.  People live, get hurt, and sometimes die.  It's just the way it is, so when it happens you'd better be doing what you love.

Age has nothing to do with this Adult Pro's get killed when large animals stomp them. It's a loss to his family but the important thing is that he was doing something he loved and apparently was pretty good at, He probably "LIVED" more in 12 years than some people do in 100.

Sorry it happened and feel for the family, but I don't think age had anything to do with it. Listening to the radio on the way into work this moring "sports talk" they were saying it's parental abuse.  ::)

In any sport you take a risk by doing it!!!

I love the rodeo ;D

I have a cousin in Oregon that used to ride Bronc in the rodeos, now he ropes calves. (safer). he says he's broken nearly every bone in his body from rodeos. (he's the REALLY crazy one (ADD, has trouble learning)).  ;D

Sports writers are no less mamby pamby liberal asshats than the MSM.

I was doing my best to break my friggin neck by the time I started racing motorcycles and skiis when I was 12 years old.  My parents encouraged me to follow my dreams and I loved them for it!

People get hurt doing the things they love!  My heart goes out to the parents and the little brother, parental abuse my ass!

It's a darn shame for the family, My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

The only parental abuse would be to NOT let your kids participate in the sports that they love.

if both the kids and the parents, know and understand the risks, I say why no.

I don't think the parents did anything wrong. Those poor people!

I don't know how many kids die in rodeo, but we have a couple of local high school football players die during practice just about every year. More kids die in car accidents. Especially with alcohol. I guess that's why we have a law here in the nanny state that teens can't drive wit other teens during their first year of driving.

My 13 year-old brother died in a fall on Boy Scout hike nearly 25 years ago and I know that I'm probably a little more over protective than other parents as a result. As you can guess, I probably wouldn't allow my kids to play football with the record around here, but luckily I have daughters. I have to worry more about them dating some POS that thinks he can slap them around or pull a date rape. It seems like those guys usually look for girls without a strong father presence around, so I'll keep my eyes up and we'll probably be good.

Particularly a father who regularly posts on gun boards. ;D Just don't keep them locked up so tight they choose a POS just to piss you off.

Brave kid. Tragic loss. But that is the name of the game. With or without helmets and chest protectors. God will welcome this kid with open arms. May he and his family be blessed for living their lives to the fullest... :'(

I firmly believe that God has each of our days numbered before we are even born.  It was this young lad's time.  It would have happened whether he was bull riding or bicycle riding.

May the memories of their son doing the things he loved sustain his parents through their time of grief.
