Title: An interesting take on SD loads
Post by: fightingquaker13 on July 11, 2009, 07:38:13 AM
I ran across this while surfing the web. I have no idea if the author knows his stuff or is just blowing smoke, so caveat emptor. That being said, it is interesting and informative. Even if its bad info, its a fun read and raises questions (for almost all calibers) that are worth thinking about.

Had some good points......, and a couple "Huh?" remarks.

If you can avoid killing your attacker you should, for both moral and legal reasons.

Huh? Why so I can have a civil suit to cover his med bills and possible revenge by BG's family or homey's?

The decreased likelihood of your attacker dying from hollowpoint bullets saves you the moral and legal complications and expense you will experience from killing a man.

Huh? "decreased likelihood?" with HP's, I won't even elaborate on this one.

* Lastly, your attacker is safer because he is far less likely to die from one or two hollowpoint bullets than the five or six round-nose slugs you would have had to fire to put him down.

Huh? I don't want my attacker safer, I want him expired and not a threat. Going to the range to run my PPK/S. Shot Placement.
Shot Placement, Shot Placement... 8)

Right there with you on the "huh" points. We say shoot to stop, but we all know what that means. As I said, I make no endorsements on this, just thought it was a fun read.

Shooting to stop is truly a relative term.  If you can get off only one shot in the time it takes your attacker to stop, and someone else can kick out three rounds in the same time, the attack is stopped either way. But three holes v one increases the probability of a different final outcome.

You make an excellent point.  However, I'm more concerned about MY final outcome than the attacker's.

First thing I noticed was that he listed American made Fiocci (  established in Missouri in 1983  http://www.fiocchiusa.com/Homepage.html ) as a foreign manufacturer.
Second thing I noticed was that his reasons for not using reloads had nothing to do with the reason given by Ayoob.

The first I can overlook as Fiocci America IS a spin off of an Italian company, but the second item is a major flaw that discredits all the other information and conclusions in his article.

Thanks FQ,

Fun read. I especially appreciated the following comment:

.357 Magnum

The most effective handgun round on the market - regardless of caliber - is the Federal .357 Magnum 125 grain jacketed hollowpoint (357B). This load has more stopping power than any other handgun bullet (and this includes more powerful rounds like the .41 and .44 Magnums).

Some folks may be getting the impression that I like the .357 Magnum. ;D

The 125grn JHP, .357 Mag, is the undisputed king of one shot stops, just the right mix of velocity, penetration and expansion. Now also has a long history, in the archives of such things. so the numbers can be jumbled up a bit versus some newer offerings, but in the end, I will stake my life on 1 everyday, it does work on humans, of many sizes and in many types of clothing.

The old tried and true 158gr JHP by Federal in .357 is also a great "bump in the night round for SD."

For close quarters, such as townhouses and apts. the Winchester 110gr. Semi JHP is a nice rd for the night stand...

Yes, I have my .357 close at night night time....

It will at least hold them off until I get to the "others" ....

Validation from the man that I (and most everyone) personally respect as the most knowledgeable firearms expert on the forum.
