Booze behind most Australians' murderous intent

ALCOHOL was involved in almost half of all homicides in Australia between 2000 and 2006, new figures show.
In 60 per cent of the 746 alcohol-related cases, the offender and the victim had been drinking, an Australian Institute of Criminology paper shows.

Homicides that occurred on the weekends or evenings were most likely to have involved alcohol while eight in 10 homicides which occurred at recreational venues involved alcohol.

Factors such as gender, employment status, age, the relationship between victim and offender and whether those involved were from an indigenous background affected the likelihood of alcohol being involved.

Killings involving male victims, unemployed victims and young offenders were also identified as most likely to have been alcohol-related, the institute's general manager of research Judy Putt said.

Almost half of all homicides involving intimate couples - 44 per cent - also showed that alcohol was a factor.

"Eighty-seven per cent of intimate partner homicides among the indigenous population were alcohol-related, making it the highest proportion of alcohol-related homicide of all factors studied," Dr Putt said.

well.... seeing as the news is coming from Australia, this would make sense.. they stay fairly well varnished over there don't they? so the chances of someone being smashed when they kill another are pretty good.
just saying...   ;D

Obviously there should be a back ground check and a waiting period, before a person is allowed to buy a bottle of the demon rum.

Where"s Carrie Nation when you need her.

If it hadn't been for RUM no one would have been interested in her back then.

(1) Licence all drinkers - passing a test being required before issue of licence.
(2) Require acquisition of "Permit to acquire" , with 28-day waiting period to prevent "impulse drinking.
(3) Apply serial numbers to all cans/bottles/casks.
(4) All refrigeraters must be bolted to the floor, be made of 4mm steel, and have concealed locks and hinges.
(5) Police to conduct "fridge inspections".
(6) People wishing to drink spirits must show "genuine need".

I rang the FAR today  (Foreign Alcohol Registry) and it looks as if it's going to get difficult to import J.D. from the States.

Also since Obama was elected they've been drinking a lot more over there so there's supply problems too.
