I got to shoot my first bowling pin match today. I used my S&W 1006 and my Glock 20. Finally a match for my 10mm. I have never had more fun. Watching those pins fly off the table with a hot 10mm load has me hooked. Needless to say I have found another match I will regularly attend. I am going to shoot a plate match in 2 weeks with light 10mm loads. I am starting to enjoy the competition. I also got to try out my Smith 617 last week in the rimfire match. I won the iron sight class with it. Anyone that hasn't tried some kind of competition is missing out.

Sounds like a great way to work that 10mm. I love bowling pins, when not slinging a 14lb ball at them......

Good job and congrats on the win. Having done the bowling pins but I am addicted to the sound of the steel plates being struck. ;)

Maybe you didn't put the needle in his arm, but you have done your share of "inviting" people to give it a try ;D
I had people egging me on to give it a try, and I don't think there is a 12 (to the power of whatever) program that could get me to kick the habit now.
My suggestion to everyone is to get comfortable with the game, and then jump in with both feet. Unlike a lot of the sports that many worship, shooting is one where the average shooter can play with the pros. Can you imagine getting into a pick up game with Michael Jordan, a Tuesday afternoon 18 with Tiger Woods, a sand lot with the Yankees, or the city park with Frave? Shooting is even better. It is the chance to play a "Friday round" in Tiger's foursome, the ability to be called on to take the starting tip off, the chance to good behind the plate in the All Star game, or to be a starting receiver for your favorite quarterback.
If you know the rules, play the game safely, and don't chicken out, you are welcome on the range with the best of them.

If you are enjoying bowling pin, I suggest looking into steel challenge. I've been doing some looking at matches and really want to give it a try soon.
As you practice and prepare for anything and everything follow m25's advice "aim small miss small," and add "slow is smooth and smooth is fast."

M58, you are catching on in a big way, congratulations, it means you get it, what it is, is highly debatable, but none the less, shooters understand. DJ practice in your given game, and practice those you don't play yet, it will provide you with great joy.

The friend that told me were to find the bowling pin match helped me with the advice to not worry about the clock. I decided when I stepped to the line I was going to forget the clock and just try not to miss. I only had 1 miss on my first run and my times were not bad. I will be shooting a plates match in 2 weeks and I will probably get addicted to that as well. I have always like the ring of steel when a bullet hits it.I have never been very competetive but I have definatly gotten bitten by the bug. The forum members on here have probably helped encourage me more than anything. Thanks guys and ladies this is a great forum because you guys are great.

Hang onto that thought about not worrying about the clock. As was said today at a club match "When the timer goes buzz, half your brain cells die." If the Surgeon General was aware of "run and gun" he would put a warning label on timers :o
A few of us shot things in different order than we had planned, and a couple guys had the dreaded FTE (failure to engage).
However, the totally despised (by some) Texas Star had me scared, I watched it eat a couple shooters, totally destroy one guy, but even after two years since my last attempt it was only a seven shot string to knock the five plates off ;D I don't know what it is, but the Star has not been an issue for me ............. so far ...
