Title: 22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer
Post by: philw on July 24, 2009, 08:56:37 AM
heard about this one yesterday

It was invented in the 1960s by P.O. Ackley to set a world record for firing bullets at over 5000 fps (1524 m/s). It is based on the .378 Weatherby Magnum cartridge case, necked down to .224 calibre.

that had got me looking for some strange wild cats

the the .17 BMF
Left is a .30-06 Springfield for comparison.
Center is the .17 BMF and right is it's parent cartridge the .50 BMG.          always wondered if someone got a .50BMG and necked it down

well here we are

A .50 BMG necked down to a .17? Wonder what the muzzle fps was?

If the bullet held together in flight long enough to be clocked............

Taking the above into account, I wonder how fast it WOULD go. Point of aim at 1000 yards ?  ;D

Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do it.

The first prototype, was OK a little heavy,...

As we progressed we cut the size and mobility down.

The muzzle brake was the key... Those prairie dogs are vaporized from the next county.

Shells are a weeeee bit pricey... :-\

Back in 1964 Guns & Ammo Magazine had an article written by then Technical Director Bob Hutton titled, "6,000 Feet Per Second, World's Hottest .22". He took a .284 Winchester cartridge and neck it down to shoot 15 grain lead swaged .22 bullets. I still have the issue, purchased when I was 12. I don't throw out anything gun related.  Bill T.

I believe there has been some mis-information here.  The bullets and casing that were pictured here were prototypes from early in the supercollider experimentation.  At the time, there was no microscopes available to actually photograph what happens in a supercollider collision.  Instead of working in a microscopic scale that could not be documented, it was decided to start with a macro scale experiment to test the viability of the microscopic supercollider.  They began with the aforementioned wildcats and worked their way to the .50 to .17 BMG neck down job.  The .17 BMG was fired from a 6 ft. barrel that had an outside diameter of 8": a bull barrel to say the least.  Some work was needed to keep the actual bullets from ripping apart because of the extremely high velocities.  It was decided to used a milled brass bullet...

Come on.  If you've read this far and not figured out that I'm full of excrement, I have a lovely bridge in Brooklyn that's for sale.

You should go back to your OLD avatar (No matter how cute your daughter is ) and give a guy a reminder.  ;D
I know squat about  "super colliders" I WAS wondering how they aimed the bullets at each other though.  ;D

I was trying to work out a way to do that without sounding completely far fetched, but the idea of very small bullets flying at very high speeds directly at each other seemed utterly ridiculous.  And I kept giggling too much to think much harder. ;D
