I was at the range yesterday when a Russian family set up on a position 2 slots down from me. Father, Mother, a tween boy, and a younger teenage girl. There was also an "Uncle" with them. The Uncle was obviously a professional and acted as their firearms instructor, going through range safety, and firearms handling. The Uncle's personal weapon was a CZ82 in 9x18, but the family was using a new HiPoint 40 S&W.
The entire family shot the HiPiont until the "Uncle" was satisfied that that they were familiar enough with it, not to shoot their toes off. I guess for a foreign national, a "resident alien", a HiPoint would be a good "temporary" if not disposable gun.
-
The HiPoint is a good gun for ANYONE that wants a a solid reliable weapon that WILL GO BANG every time you need it to but can't afford or does not want to spend multiple hundreds to thousands for .
I kid the Glock guys as the gun is just not my favorite BUT you will never hear me bash one with anything less than humor. We need to stop this infighting and superiority complex over the guns we choose to shoot / carry. etc.
Giving advise based on direct experience is fine but we need to stop the 'Glocks blow up', 'HiPoints are junk', 'KelTeks jam' when it is based solely on hearsay or first gen problems that have long been fixed.
-
I've got a retired Navy buddy that lives down in TX. He's carried a Hi-Point for years because he can afford it, it DOES go bang every time and he trusts it absolutely!
His is chambered in a good defense round of .45 ACP.....if Hal trusts his, 'Nuf said!
Now, the Sig Mosquito? I'll let Haz tell y'awl 'bout that!

+1000 I have bashed kel-tecs, but I have been careful to say that its just becuase I didn't like the trigger on my p-11, which is very subjective. I did have a few jamming problems with the ONE box of hydra shocks I put through it but it ate every FMJ without a hiccup. I would carry one tommorow and feel safe. The same is true with Hi Points. I hate gun snobbery. I like people who point me to to something better and always prefer more to less, but the only grounds to truly bash a gun is if it doesn't do the job. Then bash away because you are saving someone from making an expensive and potentially dangerous mistake. Otherwise, we should stick to the pros and cons, recognizing that everything is a compromise. There is no best gun. Like Haz, I enjoy giving the 1911 guys a hard time, but just because I love Glocks, doesn't mean I wouldn't take and carry, a 1911, a Sig or a CZ and be happy with it. I really do think this is an issue on boards like this. Its like fly fishing. To often people tune in, think that if they can't afford a $600 Sage or Loomis that they're going to be laughed at. The fact is that the bass doesn't care if its caught with an $800 high end Loomis or a $50 Wal Mart special. The same is true of guns. A Hi Point will will do the job at 10 feet just as well as a $1000 Springfield, no laser required. Quailty is good. Its just, as John Gierach once said. "important to remember you aren't as good as what you own". Thats one of the things that seperates this board from many others and I thank Haz for reminding us.

Yep. My $140 C-9 HiPoint has never failed in thousands of rounds of all types. A $450 Sig Mosquito RARELY runs one full mag with out a jam! (and that's after a trip back to the factory!)

You know I love ya man (in a strictly manly heterosexual way), but you ARE a yankee. The word is y'all, not yawl (thats a navy thing, and no one down south cares about the placement of your mizzen mast, or at least they'll be discreet about it). Have a bowl of grits (good and good for you) and try again. ;D

Technically, I'm not a Yankee, I grew up in MI, lived in FL, CA, CT and now MA. I would guess that I'm an American, nothing more, nothing less. My mizzen mast, by design is right where it's supposed to be, aft of the main! Unless of course it's a sailing vessel called a "yawl" then the mizzen would be directly behind the helm but always aft of the main! These are not Navy terms but SAILING terms and I would think someone from S. Florida would have more knowledge of such things!
As for grits! Tasteless nasty stuff, y'all can keep 'em. Us "Nawthenaaas" prefer home fries! ;D ;D

On a totally serious note, try duck fat. Yes it sounds elitist, prentious and French. BUT, the French may suck at politics and war, but those boys do know how to cook. Brown up a plate of pre-boiled chopped red potatos and diced onions in duck fat with garlic powder, thyme and black pepper and a salt and you will think you've died and gone to heavan. The skins from 3-4 chicken thighs slowly rendered over med low to release the grease (about a 3-4 on an electric stove) will do in a pinch, but duck fat, onions and potatoes take you to a very happy place. Sorry, I'm a foodie, and the cool thing about food, like life, is that sometimes the simplest, and oldest things are the best. Being a duck hunter has its advantages.

Well thanks to my Father, I can tack, jibe, run a beam reach until the keel sings through the boomvang, which is optional, and run a wing and wing downwind without a spinnaker, and keep up.. with the rest of the blowboaters...
AND I HATE BLOWBOATERS,.....
Love bacon drippings, never let them go to waste, and regarding the OP, if you have a firearm and have tested it, run everything but the kitchen sink through it and still trust it,...you have a winner....and God Bless You.
A well placed shot(s) and trained citizen can defend themselves with a Raven .25 just as well as a person with a "super de duper" version of a $1500.00 "race gun".
That is why DRTV and this forum count. Someone needs to find the MB posting regarding firearms during a recall for a brand of 9mm that shall remain nameless. He posted one of the most poignant posts regarding the "quirks" and characteristics MANY firearms have, and why we still have them...
Coming about,.....watch your head!!!!! ::)

Timothy I'm begging you to give me the address for these guys. Bacon drippings are good, but some times the smoke kills the other flavors. Duck fat gives you the richness and remains neutral and doesn't fight the the spices. If this sounds absurd, consider reloaders arguing over how many grains of X powder makes the best round. Details do matter. BTW, did anyone else notice just a bit of thread drift? Hell, if it comes down to food, booze or guns I'm happy. ;D

Humor is good, but if you make it to So Fl in your travels I will cook you up a pan of home fries and onions in duck fat and you will be a believer. The funny thing is I mentioned this to my doc when she was giving me "the lecture"tm. about cholestorol. Her response was "God those are good and less cholestorol than butter". I knowI've got the right Md. ;)

Thanks Jay but I'm no stranger to duck fat.....I can appreciate the finer workings of a saute pan or saucier myself.....just don't get the opportunity very often to use it.....our local grocer has started carrying duck breast, ostrich and bison and all of this stuff is available over the internet. I do appreciate the offer though! ;)
Now, lets not talk about the holy trinity or people are going to start gossiping! ;D
P.S. What are the three secrets to french cuisine?

I don't know if this a trick question like the knot thing, but I will venture the following:
Fresh quality ingredients (locally grown if possible, support your local farmers), if the ingredients aren't there, make something else, be guided by the grocers's shelves, not an idea in your head
Simply and well prepared (good technique beats fancy recipies everyday)
Adequate but minimal spice so as to accentuate, not hide the flavor of the dish
Rule 4, If all else fails, surrender (it is after all French) ;D
FQ13
PS As far as the Trinity, green peppers, onions and celery, now you're just talkig dirty and M'lette will have to spank you. (lucky bastard).
-
The three secrets to French cuisine are:
1) Butter
2) Butter
3) Butter
The trinity or mirepoix....celery, carrots and onions but green peppers are an alternate!

That (GP) is the norm when cooking Cajun / creole.
The other secret to anything is time. You cannot hurry and have it right. I hate cooking shows that say you can make stock in 2 or 3 hours. If your stock dosen't take a full day (8 hrs) MINIMUM then you ain't got stock. You got colored water!
And if yer makin' Ox tail soup that is a two day process!

Julia Child would be so proud of you guys and totally agree..
Butter,
Lard or equivalent
More Butter,
and Cream.
Not the Half and Half crap for coffee either....
As my arteries harden,.......the culinary orgasm is what it's all about where food is concerned. ;)

Oh no mon ami,
I spent much time in Cajun country and in Coonass cookin'. The Trinity is equal parts of celery, onion and bell pepper. A mirepoix is 1 part celery, 2 parts onion and 1 part carrots.
Emeril Legasse also makes the same distinction between the Trinity and a mirepoix.

So...back to the OP....What is the best choice for those using a Hi-Point?....the trinity or the mirepoix?... ;D
...seriously, for those who need a gun (or two...always good to have spares) and are short of finances, Hi-Point is a great choice...infinitely better than the Jennings/Bryco/Jimenez junk in that same price range....as long as the owner knows and trains to adapt to the Hi-Point's shortcomings (chamber-empty storage, heavy for carry, etc.)

Hello to all;
I have tried to find a HiPoint .40 S$W carbine around my area and and none to be found in Dealer shops. I did e-mail the National Distributor of the carbines and he stated that HiPoint is planning/wanting to have more 9's and .40's made in 2010.
Tha purpose of the purchases is to have a Rifle and Pistol in the same caliber to carry IF the need in an emergency/event happens - with out the need to worry about caring 2 different caliber's of ammo.
One of my Nephews has a 9mm Carbine and love's it. I guess I'll have to get a 9mm Carbine also. Since he is married w/children - he hit's me up for ammo from time to time. I guess we will just have 1 or 2 more reloading parties in the future, but then also he has short hands and deep pockets ( LOL ).
-
Rob Pincus and I had discussed Hi-Points. He opened my eyes at different aspects of the firearm. I owned one and it was very accurate and dependable. If you want to buy one, buy one. I was happy with mine but would rather have the .40 SW Version. Got rid of almost all of my 9mm's and went to a higher caliber. Not cheap, but I think it was a good decision. The Hi-Point I sold was gone in a matter of hours. For the price, they are awesome. But I wonder what would happen after several 100 or several 1,000 rounds were sent down range? I would still like to purchase one in .40 Smith and Wesson. My 9mm was a tack driver. :)

Haz has a high volume of ammo through his, and he is a big supporter of Hi-Point........ I think the biggest draw back is their limited capacity.

+1 on the limited capacity.

Solid idea, IMHO.
I have friend who is a LEO for a small town police department and their issued duty pistol is the Glock 22 (.40 S&W). He wanted a backup weapon that would augment his duty pistol, so he was approved to privately purchase a Kel-Tec rifle in .40 S&W. It uses the same magazines as his duty gun, and he keeps it folded in his duty bag on the front seat.
Do Hi-Point rifles use the same mags as the pistols?
That would be a bonus, to own one of each in the same calibers.

No, Hi Point rifles do not use the same mags as the pistols. One DUMB move if you ask me.

I would have bought a carbine long ago if they would take same mag as the hand gun and if they had higher cap ones, too.

That's what I like about my Kel-Tec. I can use the 10 round or the standard 15 round G22 mags, and they make a 28 round (I think it's 28, might be 27) extended Glock mag that will work.
-
I am with Haz here If I could buy a 33rd Glock mag I would own one.Idiotic they didn't do this. Seriously, $200 for the gun, $50 for the hi-cap, how many of us wouldn't look at buying one?
FQ13
-
You can actually get the mag for $25-$30
-
Ive had a couple of kel tec 9mms from time to time and they never gave me a moment of trouble. Eleven rounds of 9mm in a fairly compact package is a good thing I'd say.
