I have been called to jury duty, in Federal court. ;D I will, of course show up and serve.BUT if I make it through voir diere you should despair for the justice sytem. Political party? Libertarian. Position on drugs? Legalize. Hate crimes? An offense against the 1A.Profession? Con law/polisci prof and yes I do think I know the law as well as you your honor. BTW, jury nullification was endorsed by James Madison.
We will see how it goes. Further updates will be provided as warranted and I do hope they place me on a jury. Its the most important civilian service you can give to your country. I just won't mention THIS site, so as to avoid being kicked off for cause. ;D

Quote Ted Nugent, regarding offenders....I don't know what the pay is now, but in NC I was paid a whole $12.00 a day, with free parking. :-\
I need a Whoo Hoo smiley....
My Father was selected years ago and was seated for a murder trial that lasted 3 weeks. :-\
All for a 4 hour deliberation, to find him guilty...
Good Luck??

Quaker,
You will not make it 5 minutes into voir diere before they toss you, and that will probably be by the judge. A little dirty secret you already know is they do NOT want enlightened, knowledgeable people on the jury- no critical thinkers. They want people that are malleable, or gullible. I offer the O.J. Simpson jury as evidence for my postulation.
I want to read all about your experience..... ;D

You know the sad thing about the OJ trial? One of the jurors wrote an article (I think for Time, but its been a while). She said that the majority view was that he was guilty as hell. The problem was that Mark Furman and his partner (spacing on the name) had planted and contaminated evidence and that prohibited them from finding him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. She said she wanted to convict but that these two idiots made it impossible because there was a plausible "what if". Guilty, but framed. I don't know whether to take her seriously or not, but it has to be a damn scary thing to litterally have someone's life in your hands. I've never been there before and hope I get a civil suit rather than a murder trial. But being So Fl who knows. We will see.

I got called for jury duty a month ago, made it through lunch but got kicked when they found out that I took medications that would require me to pee every 20 minutes for the first few hours after I take it. They also kicked a local cop who said she knew most of the officers who might be called as witnesses - one was her supervisor.

I have been seated on civil and criminal juries at least 5 or 6 times. I always enjoyed the cases and I was glad to do my duty. Every experience has been fascinating. I am actually disappointed if I'm not seated.
-
I've been called 5 times, sat on four of them, I tired every thing to get out. acting like a racist, 'if they arrested him, he is guilty", Its not that I mind doing my civic duty, but I know peopl e that have never been called, and they have been retired 30 years.

I had a co-worker, not a friend, who's wife was a public defender. They screened people to get a friendly jury...especially a point was getting rid of gun owners...on their "to do" list was to check out the bumper stickers on the cars and if it had NRA or some "flag waving idiot sticker" on it, the public defenders would make a lot of noise to disqualify that person as a jurist.
Contemplate the question by counting to three, take a breath and answer in consideration of what they really want to know....there is an ulterior motive in juror questions...always, both sides.

I'd say that you should do your best to honestly be seated. I have been called three times. All three times the cases were settled prior to trial. Two were DUI and one was a sexual assault. I was seated twice and kept as an alternate once.
My view is that serving jury duty is a responsibility that comes with being a citizen, and if we don't participate we are unraveling the Bill of Rights just as surely as those that try to remove the Second Amendment. Also, falsifying your answers to get out of duty, TAB, is no different in my mind than those that found the Canadian border in the sixties and seventies.
Do your duty and serve your time. The next person that needs a fair jury may be you!

And on this we are in agreement.

I'm called for mid-september for federal jury duty. It would be a financial hardship as I'm needed through september for the little shop we have and I've applied for a postponement until October- haven't heard anything back yet, though.
The other factor is that it is 80 miles each way to the federal court for me. They pay mileage and $40 a day. At the current Federal rate they would pay me more for mileage than for service.
If you are serving in some capacity that's all that counts. I used to be volunteer FD and that got me out of jury duty because of service. Now I'm retired from that, and I'm fair game. I just wish it wouldn't help me go bankrupt while I serve.

I was called a few years ago while still recuperating from my accident. I delayed another year and finally got my first chance to serve. I made it through two voir diere evolutions and was dismissed both times for no apparent reason. Probably because I'm in engineering and we tend to over analyze everything.
On the third, it was a tort case where a woman was suing the driver that hit her from behind at a stop light. When the woman was introduced, she popped up out of her seat with no apperant injuries that I could tell.
I was dismissed by the defense because of my experiences with being run over by a car. They didn't think I would be impartial. Funny thing about that, I was already leaning towards the defense case because the woman was obviously in no physical pain from what I could tell from across the room. She was probably just looking for a quick payday...their loss!
In MA, your employer is required by law to pay your salary for up to three days while serving in state courts.

That's a big help if you happen to HAVE an employer.

Not a chance Johnny B.....FQ has an opinion, something lawyers don't want to deal with...in fact, FQ has hundreds of opinions, with very little puncutation. I can only imagine that when the Professor speaks, he's like one long run-on sentence!
The stenographer would wear out the keyboard! ;D ;D ;D

I have been called for state court jury 3 times. 2 criminal, and when they heard "retired cop" they booted me quickly. The 3rd was a civil case and I had graduated from high school with the plaintiff's son. Boot #3 in short order.

66 and never been called.

They called me once..... Let me go because I said I wouldn't let somebody off on a BS technicality like "Instead of being arrested at 12 midnight on August 12th like the paperwork said, he was actually caught at 11:59:59 PM on August 11th."
