The next time the guide says wait,.....I'm slappin him... Take the shot when you have it.
The lion went down, but not before soiling the teams pants, for one last charge.
Good for the lion...

That's why you carry a side arm while hunting, or a semi auto carbine. And I'd be willing to bet that that lion had it coming. I doubt their big on the hunting list.

every time I see that one I think Bugger that there is guns getting pointed and shot in every direction

They don't call him the King for nothing! ;)
(and that PH should be next on the hunted list!)
-
Glad I'm too poor to hunt lions. I've never had much use for trophy hunting. If I can't eat it, I've got no reason to shoot it.
I wish that the lion would have gotten away, after a good swipe on the guide.

So Haz ... Do we need to ask which hunter asked for another "Clip" just before the attack ;)

Yep, thats the end all be all of lion videos, and one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.
I saw that on TV on an African Hunting show one time, and I was absolutely speechless the first time I saw it. It is almost overwhelming to think about the amount of poise that something like that took. That guy was staring death right in the face and put the shot right on the money. Not many people could perform such a task under such a threat, but that guy stepped up and did what had to be done to save his own life.
-
Can't imagine what that would have been like. Making the shot count is an understatement.
How no one got shot in the other video is amazing.
-
everytime I see that I get mad thinking that was not in the wild, that was in an enclosed preserve where these animals dont have a chance and I suspect have been de clawed. I have never seen fence and telephone poles in the wild. Makes me sick.

2How, you don't understand what you are talking about.
First, you have never seen phone poles in the wild ? That's odd because America was criss crossed with telegraph poles as far back as the 1850's. South Africa was pretty well wired by the end of the Boer war in 1900.
Secondly, you need to expand your idea of a "Game Preserve" this is NOT a farm were animals are led out and shot. Think more along the lines of Yellowstone. These animals are as wild as they ever were. According to the information on YouTube the video seems to be from the Kruger National park, it measures 217 MILES by 37 Miles and amung many other species contains 1500 lions (1499 now ;D )
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kruger_National_Park
All the Big Five game animals are found at Kruger National Park, which has more species of mammals than any other African Game Reserve (at 147 species). There are webcams set up to observe the wild life. [8]
As of 2009[update], the park has counted approximately:
* 27,000 African Buffalo
* 350 African Hunting Dogs
* 350 Black Rhinoceros
* 4,509 White Rhinoceros
* 17,797 Burchell's Zebras
* 500 Bushbucks
* 200 Cheetahs
* 300 Common Eland
* 5,114 Giraffes
* 5,798 Greater Kudus
* 3,000 Hippopotamus
* 1,500 Lions
* 1,000 Leopards
* 2,000 Spotted Hyenas
* 11,672 Elephants
* 5,000 Waterbuck
* 9,612 Blue Wildebeest
* 90,000 Impalas
The park stopped culling elephants in 1989 and tried translocating them, but by 2004 the population had increased to 11,670 elephants (2006: approximately 13,500, 2009: 11.672). The park's habitats can only sustain about 8,000 elephants. The park started using annual contraception in 1995, but has stopped that due to problems with delivering the contraceptives and upsetting the herds.
Kruger National Park holds over 48 tons of ivory in storage. According to Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), it is allowed to sell 30 tons.

I second that. Perhaps you've only experience the 'wild' in your neck of the woods, but I tie my 'tree' stand up to telephone poles, that run through remote property, while bow hunting. Animal populations in that type of managed environment have to be controlled, or stuff go nuts.
You could make alot of pianos with 30 tons of ivory, or some really nice pistol grips. ;D
-
I could not tell from the video but what 2How thought were "Phone poles", may very well have been trees striped by Giraffe, or the 3000+ excess Elephants.
-
I'm not sure what's going on with the first video.
Yes there are lot's of telephone poles in South Africa and many people fence to keep the animals out, not in.
You can't hunt in Kruger, the wardens do the culling of elephants, but some wildlife moves out of the park and there is hunting in the area around it. Wildlife causes big problems for ranchers and framers in the area and hunting by sports is a great source of income locally. I had a chance to go to Kruger after doing some work in South Africa and it's an amazing place.
SCI let it's members know that there was in fact some "stocked" lion hunting going on in South Africa and that they would not list lions in their trophy books until this was resolved. I don't know what the status is currently.
I think in the longer version I saw the sports shirt is ripped. So it very well might be a lion that wandered off the park and was legal game. Old Leo sure didn't act like somebodys pet or some reject from the circus.
I thought it was a perfect example of were optics can be a problem on a rifle. Once that lion charged it would be very hard to get a good sight picture. Express sight were made for that reason.

All I know about Hunting Africa came from some books by Hathaway and Ruark but in the Wiki article it said there were 11 safari lodges ?
-
That is meant as a question for clarification, in case I wasn't clear.
-
Kid,
I have eaten lion at an Explorers Club dinner in New York. The meat is not bad. I was surprised to see how much fat was on my piece. The lion was just one of many appetizers. The main course was wild boar and was it ever good.
BTW I was a guest and not a member.
I am not big on going to Africa to hunt, but you have to give the sport its due.
-
THAT VIDEO IS PURE BULL SHIT , IF YOU THINK THAT WAS A RIGHTEOUS HUNT YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND. SAY WHAT YOU WANT I DONT BELIEVE A MINUTE OF IT.ANYONE WHO CONDONES THIS CRAP IS SOMEONE I WANT IN MY FACE.
-
WELL IM SURE YOU BIG BAD GUYS HAVE A LOT OF LAUGHS KILLING A CONTAINED BEAST AND FEASTING ON HIM. YOU ARE THE SADEST PART OF THE GUN CULTURE.
-
Tom,
I'm sure no expert. I read the same books.
The big problem when I was there in 1999 was too many elephants. They want to cull even more but were a catching a load of dung from the animal rights crowd.
They said they knew we were hunters even though we weren't there to shoot. The one thing I heard from rangers, guides and the lodge owner (we stayed west of the park) was what cheap skates and pain in the butts the eco-tourist were.
I would love to go back and hunt but now that I have the money, I don't have the time.
2show, the hunting culture predates the gun culture by a day or so.
-
I agree with Texas Bryan 100% on carrying a side arm while hunting. Especially if you are hunting dangerous game. I cannot believe none of those hunters were hurt when the lion charged and attacked? Scary video.
I also agree with Kid Shellen, if you are not going to eat it, why kill it?
-

Ummmm, because they are pissing on the constitution and systematically dismantling our country.
*Govt watch dogs, please note that this post was an attempt at sarcasm, and it is intended for mature audiences for the purposes of entertainment and possibly art. I do not in anyway condone the killing of politicians.... Tom Bogan does .... I feel very strongly that all politicians have the right to life, and that we should in no way threaten them with physical violence. It is also important to note that I am a registered Democrat and a card carrying member of the ACLU ***No politicians were harmed in the making of this post***.

I think one of the last shots before leaping at the guide did some real damage. I replayed it, and the way the lion's body reacted looked like he was hit as he was going in for the bite. His body almost looked like it was slammed, with the upper part stopping and the lower part continuing a bit under the upper part. That can't be faked. I would think. He missed the guide mostly, and had his mouth wide open for a killing bite as he passed the guide. The shot distracted him enough to miss, possibly reflexive?
Were I the guide, I would have burned my shorts, there would be no way of ever getting them clean.
2how, I understand the "canned hunt" hostility, but these preserves are generally very large. I stayed on an elk hunting preserve in SD some years back that was 11,000 acres. For the geographically challenged (Haz? ? ;) ) that is roughly 15 square miles. Yes, it is surrounded by a fence, but that only limits animals at the fringe, not in the middle. If this were a case of sitting at your computer, and pressing a key to fire a gun, I would be with you. These guys, however, are on foot in amongst the lions. More than I would ever do.
I too was troubled by the large number of shots being whipped around
-
I have no problem with someone shooting a trophy if it is in a managed population and all is above board. The meat can always be provided to the needy. If you're out in the middle of all these beasties, it's a fair fight. Just hope you're with a good guide.

Isn't that the way it ALWAYS works out ? ::)
2 HOW, since you must have been there why did you participate in such a despicable act ?
If you WEREN'T there, then you don't know what you are talking about and should STFU, instead of playing keyboard tough guy.

My favorite part was at about the :39 second mark with the "lung-seizing, gasp-like scream" emitted by the 'lucky' guy, just before he deposited a mud-pie in the cotton-patch.

You , who like this kind of stuff , have a sick mind. this is not a hunt. Tell you what , I give you 200 yards with any gun you want. and run at me. tell me where and when , get some. Talk alot of shit and got no back bone.

Wow 3 pages,...I'm a shooter, not really a hunter, just like the bulls in a bull fight, or the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, or a dangerous game hunting/fishing trip.
You are in their yard/element, and that bang stick better be on target. The whole point I noted was the panic firing that could have killed other members of the party on the charge.
and I was pulling for the Lion, and still root for the Bulls.
As an analogy, when I had to clear some line off our port engine prop, I had to jump in 65 miles offshore, I had a great knife, BUT what did I feel like out that far?
Bait & a lesser member of the food chain...

Somebody forgot the rule that when you hunt dangerous game you bring enough gun. And I can't believe no one got shot.

Maybe he has too much lentils and tofu in his diet? This can be counter acted with a little teaspoon of cement causing a temporary feeling similar to HTFU ;) ;D

I have watched this video many times in the last 3 yrs at least, several points, and many for the lion, use enough gun, make a good hit, straight on is iffie, this old guy demonstrated it, the following attack and the hunters involved with it, was a goat f..k, I am so surprised no one was shot, by another hunter. That's what happens when people in REAL fear do, take notes.
When I first saw it , the 1st thing that came to mind was " duck ", go under until all this has passed.
2how, the lion is the king, I can't say this was a canned hunt, Maybe, but here is the truth, a lion is one of the ultimate predators, it will kill you and eat you, " quid co pro " you could say,, I have never had the oppurtunity to hunt our mountain lions here in Texas, but they can give as good as they get. Real predators need to be controlled, controlled, means killing. We don't have grizzlies here, but the same applies. It all sounds cool, until your dinner, that is also the rush, there are not enough here in Texas to hope to get a shot at. But if your it, well, your it......
I personally would not make lion 1st on my list, but if there was a maneater, and i was present, would consider it.
Tom, I don't know this guy is backwards, let him speak.

I would not have said anything about 2 how's post as I'm not a hunter either. But he is making unsubstantiated claims with out a shred of proof, insulting about half the members here, and using the the same type of "I can talk tough through the internet" cowardice as what got Onrecess kicked off. this isn't the only thread where he's doing this, he more or less threatened FQ for not liking NASCAR.
I'm insulting, sarcastic and offensive when I'm making a point, but I back it up with facts, and information. If 2How doesn't like the subject he does not have to read it. If he can not accept that some people DO want to test them selves against things that can kill them back, that's just to bad.
If he just wants to play internet tough guy to compensate for his own inadequacy, he should find some where else to do it.
