Title: Has any President ever worked less?
Post by: Pathfinder on August 15, 2009, 03:13:20 PM
OK, I know that Ike loved going to Burning Tree and getting in 18 every now and then. And JFK loved his sailboat off Hyannis Port. Ronnie and W worked on their ranches. But this guy - and family - are taking us to the cleaners for all of their vacations - and only 7 months into his reign term of office.

FTA: "Obama Mixes Business With Family Pleasure During Trip Out West
The Obama family -- the president, the first lady and daughters Malia and Sasha, and other relatives -- had a busy sightseeing weekend planned: visiting Yellowstone National Park on Saturday and touring Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona on Sunday.

President Obama and his daugthers (sic!!!!!), Malia and Sasha, viewing the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park (White House)

While President Obama is pressing hard to rally support for his health care reform plan at different stops across the country, he hasn't allowed that to interfere with a weekend family trip to the rustic West and its national parks.

The Obama family -- the president, the first lady and daughters Malia and Sasha, and other relatives -- had a busy sightseeing weekend planned: visiting Yellowstone National Park on Saturday and touring Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona on Sunday.

"Oh, that's pretty good. Cool! Look at that. That's a geyser there," a casually dressed Obama said as he and his family watched Old Faithful erupt in Yellowstone after they strolled up a path with park rangers.

Earlier, his entourage walked wooden boardwalks and bridges in the steamy Black Sand Basin, where hot springs and small geysers dot the picturesque landscape.

The president has shrewdly mixed business with pleasure as he seeks to regain control of the public debate on health care.

On Friday, the president took 2 1/2 hours after his health care town hall near Bozeman, Mont., on Friday to make good on a campaign promise to learn fly fishing when he revisits the state. "Obama Mixes Business With Family Pleasure During Trip Out West

Not defending the man, but I've wondered how much time ANY President actually spends doing "work" since all you ever hear is "The President is currently at Camp David..." or "The President is vacationing in..."  I realize that they still end up working since they have 24/7 comms with the rest of government and have meetings all day everyday but DAMN!   W seemed to be in Crawford all the time, Slick Willie at Camp David or somewhere else, and Bush Sr was in Hiannasport ?SP?

When they are at Camp David or their homes they usually get the MOST work done as they do not have to cater to visitors, and the press. It also gives them the chance to talk to people who for one reason or another can't be seen conveniently at the White House.

Edited for accuracy.

Has any POTUS ever worked less?

Hmmm,...I'm thinking Taft, or Andrew Johnson,....

It wasn't Taft
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Howard_Taft
In his first and only term, President Taft's domestic agenda emphasized trust-busting, civil service reform, strengthening the Interstate Commerce Commission, improving the performance of the postal service, and passage of the Sixteenth Amendment. Abroad, Taft sought to further the economic development of undeveloped nations in Latin America and Asia through the method he termed "Dollar Diplomacy." However, Taft often alienated his own key constituencies, and was overwhelmingly defeated in his bid for a second term in the presidential election of 1912.

Might be Johnson.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Johnson
Johnson was nominated for the Vice President slot in 1864 on the National Union Party ticket. He and Lincoln were elected in November 1864. Johnson succeeded to the Presidency upon Lincoln's assassination on April 15, 1865.

As president he took charge of Presidential Reconstruction – the first phase of Reconstruction – which lasted until the Radical Republicans gained control of Congress in the 1866 elections. His conciliatory policies towards the South, his hurry to reincorporate the former Confederates back into the union, and his vetoes of civil rights bills embroiled him in a bitter dispute with some Republicans.[4] The Radicals in the House of Representatives impeached him in 1868 while charging him with violating the Tenure of Office Act, a law enacted by Congress in March 1867 over Johnson's veto, but he was acquitted by a single vote in the Senate.

He is the most recent President to represent a party other than the Republican or Democratic parties, having represented both the Democrats and the National Union Party. He is consistently ranked by historians as being among the worst U.S. presidents.

Heres another candidate
His inoffensive personality caused him to make many friends, but he suffered tragedy in his personal life and as president subsequently made decisions which were widely criticized and divisive in their effects, thus giving him the reputation as one of the worst presidents in U.S. history

I wish he had done less.

Maybe we wouldn't be so far in debt.

Bush 41 liked to hang out at Kennybunkport, Maine.

I almost HATE doing this, but.....

I work for a left-wing, socialist, gay, high profile politician.  I'm a private contractor in his protection detail.  (The Mayor's Protective Detail is made up of all retired, conservative cops.)  As such, I get to see most of what goes on behind the scenes.  There is a LOT that politicians do, that you will never know about, or see.  What you see on the TV is a very, very small fraction of what they do.  They "seem to be having a good time" at public appearances, but in most cases it is their game face.  From what I know, from our visits with other politicians and from talking with some former SS agents, the president is very seldom not working.  What you see, is exactly what they WANT you to see.  Many photo ops are very precisely staged.

I can imagine that the president, no matter who his may be, gets very little time to himself.  Now, having said that, I have no idea how Obama conducts his office.  Reagan and Bush 43 were supposedly early to bed and delegated much of what they did to others, but there were many middle-of-the-night wake-ups.  Is Obama abusing his office, in more ways than one?  We shall see.

A former president (I wish I could remember who) was asked when leaving office, "what was the best part of the job."  His reply; "Air Force One."

Please don't get me wrong.  I am not defending Obama, and I think he is an evil man who truly hates what America is and wants to re-make it in his image.   But, there is a chance he is like most politicians and actually does put in long days and nights.   Excuse me, I need a shower.  Ugh!

This is standard complaint that is voiced for every POTUS by the people in opposition to POTUS.  Hasn't he done ENOUGH already?

I wish he would work even less!
