Hi, so i have a Brownell custom AR15, (the one in picture Picture <---)
The stock, pistol grip and rail covers are desert colors from my time in the sand pit, and now im living in civvie land i thought i should paint the stock grip and rail covers in OD so it dosent look so out of place in rural montana.
i was planning on just spray painting it but was wondering if there was any specific protection or waterproof paint that i need to use. and do i just spray it directly on the surface or do i need to prep the plastic for painting or what?
Thanks ;D

My buddy has been using Duracoat to do a few of his guns. Good results and the stuff doesn't come off.

Whatever you paint, give it a wipe with denatured alcohol first, primer is a good call. Brownell's have a great product.

Here's another option:

What's wrong with the way it is? Nothing wrong with sand pit,.....

thanks guys, i ordered the Brownell paint job, will post pics when i get it done.
by sand pit i meant Iraq and Afghanistan. sorry, Brit military lingo ::)

No Worries Jackel, go for it, I do like duracoat, but do what you want to do, it is your rifle ;D and you have earned it, thank you for you participation in the most eastern vacation. I really respect and appreciate it.

Duracoat and those special paints are for the metal, the parts you mentioned are the plastic ones. Go to the store and get some Krylon or other spray enamal, or better yet, Testor's model paint in a spray can. No priming needed but +10 on washing with alcohol to remove oils and dirt.

Ha Ha!
Duracoat is good on metal, plastic and wood.

So's Krylon and it's under $2 a can.

Krylon is as good. It will all wear, put a good matte clear coat over it. When I re-did my Stevens Tupperware, I found a Vinyl rain poncho in Woodlands real tree camo for $5.00 and wall papered it on the stock with 3M spray adhesive. It turned out great, so I did my Shotgun and AR furniture. If you can wall paper, you can do it.
I think I'll leave it Black for a while, then Maybe Marpat Marine digital.

If all you are doing is the furniture...
KRYLON FUSION
I been using this on car parts since it came out, you cant beat it for durability on plastic...i cannoty stress enough how awesome this stuff is on plastic...and they indeed make camo colors...olive, brown, black, and i believe loam...all in flat finish

Krylon is excellent for painting stocks......and they have some killer shades of blue! :P

Here is a pic of my custom Dissy in Montana Camo.. :)

The paint was Krylon, and other than cleaning it really good I just painted it. When it really starts to get scraped off, I just shoot some more on it. I only care how it works, not how it looks.

Agreed. But I have to say I agree with Bidah's thinking, performance counts for far more than image ;D

Montana camo at it's best :D

It will work in most of the state. It is a little too brown for up in the NW corner. It works pretty good with sagebrush.
I have seen some beautiful paint jobs. I also do not normally see those jobs out "working" either. The working rifles that I see are painted with Krylon mostly, some with Duracoat or similar, and do not look fancy or have a particular pattern. Just spray it and go. I do keep enough on hand to paint all my rifles should the need arise. If you are going to keep it, use it, and it is a working rifle, then paint it to suit your needs.

I have a used AK that bubba got a hold of and painted OD along with some other work. I need to try some "custom camo" work on it. I just hope I have more talent than bubba did.
-
ok, i have some paint (OD) and now you guys are making me think about a full body job, not just the furniture. im confused
-
Blotches, the idea is to break up the out line, you can always wrap strips of sheet around the handguards and stock in the winter.
-
i dont really care about camo, just wanna look cool.
it all about the style man CDI 8)

Excellent paint jobs. Very creative on the patterns.
-
Krylon has a spraypaint that sticks to plastic now. I've used it on a couple of parts that I just didn't want to buy again in OD for my 'coyote rifle.
