The Associated Press

(AP) — PATERSON, N.J. - Curfews might not be just for kids anymore in one city in northern New Jersey.

Officials in Paterson are considering one for people of all ages in a bid to curb violence after a spate of deadly shootings.

Several experts say they believe it would be the nation's first curfew of its type to include adults. The state ACLU says it would open Paterson to legal action.

The curfew would last for two months and would bar people from loitering outside from midnight to 7 a.m. Violators would face up to a $2,000 fine and 90 days in jail.

Officials are still working to make sure the plan can withstand legal challenges.

If the City Council passes it Sept. 1, a second vote and a public hearing are needed for it to take effect.

This being NJ seems to me if they want to cut crime all they have to do is round up the rest of the politicians!

So, let me get this straight.....The city officials are unable to do their jobs and protect people. Rather than finding another tactic, asking for state or fed assistance, or resigning enmasse due to demonstrated incompetance, they propose to place every man woman and child underhouse arrest? Thus the police, who obviously can't do the job currently, will now have hundreds more people to arrest.WTF? ??? I think that Tom and I should meet up at that public hearing and set up a concession stand selling tar, feathers and rope, the scratchy hemp kind. Not only would we more than pay for the trip with the rope, we could sell pop corn at the hangings. ;D
FQ13 who has reluctantly decided that 11:00 am is far too early to drink and so instead will load another mag for his AR YIKES!

New Jersey City May Impose Nation's First Curfew for Adults

PATERSON, N.J. —  Curfews might not be just for kids anymore in one northern New Jersey city.

Seeking to curb violence after a spate of deadly summer shootings, Paterson officials are considering an unusual ordinance that would prevent people of all ages from gathering outside in public late at night.

The measure could be the nation's first citywide, non-emergency curfew to include adults, several experts said.

"We're trying to think outside the box," said Mayor Jose Torres. "This was triggered predominantly by fear among city residents over the shootings that have been occurring this summer."

A 29-year-old Paterson man was gunned down in his car last week in the latest chapter of a tit-for-tat battle between rival groups, according to police who decline to describe them as gangs. The battle has generated community fear, even though overall shootings and violence remain low by historical standards.

Paterson, New Jersey's third-largest city at 147,000 people, has had six homicides and 30 shootings this year, according to city data. That compares with 13 homicides and 37 shootings for the same period of 2008.

The curfew would last for two months and bar people from loitering outside from midnight to 7 a.m. Violators would face up to a $2,000 fine and 90 days in jail. It would not apply to people in transit.

The measure was initially scheduled for consideration by the City Council on Monday, then Tuesday, and is now slated for Sept. 1. If the measure is approved, a second vote and a public hearing would still be needed before it goes into effect.

Legal challenges are a possibility, and Torres attributed the voting delays to the need to word the ordinance just right.

*****

Can you imagine a "curfew" for crime??? Oh, wait,...it's an anti gun state,...so crime is bad, as the criminals Don't give a F*** and prefer unarmed victims...
