LAS VEGAS (AP) - A former Las Vegas director for a political advocacy group accused of illegally paying canvassers to register voters during last year's presidential campaign has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and agreed to testify against the group and another employee.
Chief Deputy Nevada Attorney General Conrad Hafen said Wednesday that Christopher Edwards' plea deal strengthens a felony case against the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now and Amy Busefink, a former regional voter registration director for ACORN.
Edwards pleaded guilty this week to two counts of conspiracy to commit the crime of compensation for registration of voters.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 17.
Hafen says the group had a local policy of paying bonuses to canvassers who signed up 21 or more new voters per shift.

Good! But lets not demonize ACORN in particular. There lots of groups that do this, affilliated with both parties. The deal is this. Groups like PIRG etc have paid canvassers. They get contracts to gather petition signatures to put causes or candidates on the ballot by getting to X number. There are bonuses for timeliness, clean signatures etc. Parties and candidates hire them for voter registration. Theoretically, they aren't being paid per voter registration. Just like an escort isn't being paid for sex. She's just a dinner date. This is one more example of how money works in campaigns. The NRA, unions, environmentalists, abotion activists etc all do it. I've seen it, I've done it. Its all nudge, nudge wink, wink, just obey the LETTER of the law. Everything else is fair game. Its like the designated hitter rule in baseball, a travesty, but until its changed its the rule. Both sides take adantage. It needs to be stopped.

Good! But lets not demonize ACORN in particular. Why not? Who else is national, gets huge funding from the US gummint, and is under assault in a number of states for vote fraud? There lots of groups that do this, affilliated with both parties. Who? The deal is this. Groups like PIRG etc have paid canvassers. They get contracts to gather petition signatures Petitions are not voter registration, don't change the subject to put causes or candidates on the ballot by getting to X number. There are bonuses for timeliness, clean signatures etc. Parties and candidates hire them for voter registration. Theoretically, they aren't being paid per voter registration. Just like an escort isn't being paid for sex. What an incredible thread drift - illegal voter registration to sex for sale She's just a dinner date. This is one more example of how money works in campaigns. The NRA, unions, environmentalists, abotion activists etc all do it. I've seen it, I've done it. Its all nudge, nudge wink, wink, just obey the LETTER of the law. Everything else is fair game. Its like the designated hitter rule in baseball Illegal voter reg to petitions to sex to baseball - you sure you're a teacher? ? ? , a travesty, but until its changed its the rule. Both sides take adantage According to whom? Cite your sources . It needs to be stopped.

FQ,
BULLSH!T! ACORN is dirty to the core. And now they want to run the census (for a couple of billion). They have no accounting for monies they have already received and BHo wants to give them more just to keep the Dims in power and skew the numbers.
-
ACORN operatives have been indicted and or convicted of criminal activities against BOTH Bush campaigns in something like 33 states. That means your rationalization is BS because they are NOT following the letter of the law.
They should be shut down with RICO indictments.

Path, Haz
I am not in any way shape or form defending ACORN. I am merely pointing out that saying that they are only bad guy out there is as stupid as saying that arresting the city's biggest drug dealer doesn't mean that someone won't take his job next week. The point is (Path) that canvassing firms make money getting signatures to put candidates on ballots (10,000 for Congress here in Fl. last I was involved). This sort of infra-strucure means they are also used by parties to get voter registration. Some are purely mercenary. These are the ones that ask you taste the new Pepsi product or sign up for a Visa. Some are ideological like Acorn. Either way, they employ minimum wage workers and they are a low cost way to get folks registered, and hopefully to vote. My point is simply that if ACORN were to vanish tommorow, you haven't even begun to solve the problem.

Bullshit FQ, They have a history of consistently breaking the LETTER as well as the spirit of the law. They are the only group to face indictments during the last 3 election cycles. And in one of the few recent bipartisan acts lately they have been indicted by BOTH Dem AND Rep. Administrations. Mean while NON of the other groups has faced complaints.

. Mean while NON of the other groups has faced complaints.
And they probably should be facing them. I am NOT pro-Acorn guy here. I just worked enough campaigns (for three parties) to know how ugly this stuff gets.

Doesn't matter whether the others SHOULD or not. The point is that They are NOT getting in trouble and ACORN IS, even when their guy wins. So they are either more crooked than other groups or less competent.
Neither speaks well about them.

A little from Column A, and a little from Column B, I think.

Absolutely filthy, rotten crooked and they deserve whatever they get, as does every dirty organization that corrupts the voting process.
Perhaps a previously suggested Tom Bogan solution should be applied. (http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae111/KidShelleen/Smileys/smileys.gif)

In my opinion ACORN is a thug operation and an ongoing criminal enterprise. They should be tried under the RICO statutes. The sad thing is we will be paying the legal fees from all the tax dollars stolen from us and redistributed to these crooks.
