Friends,
Been looking at Yankee Hill and Gemtech for my G23. Any opinions out there. Any thoughts on the streamlining of paperwork necessary to facilitate getting one. Read a lot of stuff on the web. Conflicting data, though in the end it would appear that I could get one here in WI. Any thoughts on how to make the case for need to LEAs or is that even necessary. By that I mean, do you have to plead your case or do they just sign off on it if you are not too scary. Been looking at barrels too, any thoughts on the best for either suppressor. I am figuring 220 for the barrel, 750-800 for the suppressor and another 200 to the Feds. Is that about right? :P

Only thing I can help you with is a reason. Sound suppression is a health and safety issue. Obviously the quieter the gun, the more protection you will get from you hearing protection. also, the more suppressors the less the neighbors will complain about range noise.

I don't think you need a full Class III license, just the $200 tax stamp for the suppressor.

Find and talk to a class three dealer in your state. They should know the requirements for obtaining a suppresor in your state. If possible talk to several dealers for both information and prices.

i think that if i was going to apply for a supressor i would get the full III and put it on something really badass. like a MP7:

I own several class III items so I hope what I have below helps:
First, be absolutely sure your STATE laws allow you to purchase a suppressor.
Next, if you want to purchase it in YOUR name you must get the signature of the chief law enforcement official in your area. This could be, and most likely is, the sheriff or it could be the chief judge for your courts, or it could be the local district attorney. But going this route has it's pitfalls. The biggest one is politics. If they don't know you very well, they probably will not sign for you.
The workaround is to purchase the suppressor in the name of a living trust. There are software programs that will allow you to setup a trust, but I would use an attorney to do that for you; but it costs much more to go that route. To be on the safe side, I would contact a local class III dealer in your area that has been doing this for some time and they can guide you through the process.
The hardest part of this is deciding on which route to go. For me I used my living trust, which I had created several years before I purchased my first sub machine gun. It was very straightforward and it took approximately 6 weeks for the transfer to go through. I understand now the wait time is around 90 days.

I guess the good news is bad news... I do not have any history with the local Sheriff or any judges. I will take your advice and talk with the local Class III folks and just see how commonly these are purchased. History should tell me that it is possible or not. It may be easier to get a submachine gun...

The official Form 4 instructions for Item 17 gives the details on who you need to see for approval.
Print this Form 4 and take it to your local official for signature on Item 17.
It is up to your local official to approve or not-your NFA dealer should be able to tell you if your local official has a history of approval.

Just remember, all the Class III guys will be the first one's rounded up, if AG Eric Holder gets his way...
The ATF already has your number, and the potential "knock, knock,knock" will happen to you first...
Other than that, fill out the forms, pay the money, get the damn thing and enjoy,..!!!
