First of all let me say I have little money and zero use for this rifle. But, c'mon.....if little things like that stopped me I wouldn't be on this board. Gander has Moisin Nagants on sale with full kit and bayonet for $129. I'm trying really hard to say no. How many AR mags or rounds f 9mm etc. could I buy? But they are just cool, a bit of history, and we all know that you you just can't make them not go bang. I have refused to rent Enemy At The Gates, but I'm tempted. Tell me why I don't want this commie POS. ;D

You probably could find them else where cheaper.
-
FQ Sometimes you just have too. For a piece of history like that I'd do it. The last piece of history I handled I couldn't convince myself that I could pay the $1000 for a safequeen. I regret it slightly
-
Get it. Ammo is relativly cheap. And rent "Enemy at the Gates".
You may find them cheaper, but you may not and be looking for a long time.
-
I myself own the M38 and am looking for a m44. The ammo is cheap and eazy to find, the rifle itself will go band no matter what. I have a project in mind for the m44, i going to make a brush gun with a scout mount for hog hunts.
-
at SOG you can get one with bayonet, oiler, sling etc. for $70.00.
800 rounds of ammo is $148.00.
You need a C&R license ($30 for 5 years) but it will be shipped to your door!
-
If you don't, you'll always wish you had.
-
Asking this group to try to talk you out of buying a gun is like asking bill clinton to stop looking at woman.
-
The correct question is why you shouldnt buy it, you owe it to yourself to buy things that some poor buggers cant buy in other countires, personally I would be buying a springfield instead of a nagant ;)
-
You should be able to find it for $75-$80
-

But a Springfield is $700 not $70. ;)

I paid $69 plus shipping for my M-44's and $79 plus shipping for my 91/30's with my C&R.
I cut the bayonet/barrel off one of the M-44's. Remounted the front sight, recrowned the barrel, installed turned down bolt handle, scope mount, synthetic stock. It makes for a really cheap beater gun that shoots great.
Big 5 has them on sale most of the time for $89.00 or$99.00 if there is one near you. They have a sale on the 91/30 that ends today.

Just get the damn thing, you'll be glad for two reasons:
You can always barter/swap/trade/ for something else,
OR,,,, Be thankful when the Zombies get inside the wire...and you need to just shoot the target with cheap but plentiful ammo.
-
Damn right, those zombies wont no what hit them. Heck 7.62x54r would go through at least 2 or 3 zombies no problem. ;D

I've looked over MANY different Mosin Nagants in stores that were priced anywhere from $79, to $149. You USUALLY get what you pay for. The cheaper rifles will undoubtedly have rusted out bores, much worse condition stocks, some will even be missing parts! At any price most are not good "pieces of history" as they've been reworked by importing armories (look for a shiny silver muzzle - 91/30's chopped down). The price you mention isnt likely to change anytime soon considering the 91/30 and its variants are probably the highest production bolt rifle to ever exist.
They CAN BE great rifles! I've got an M44, and a 91/30. Look VERY closely before you buy!!! You'll find more weird things about the gun when you get it home than you could ever imagin! I bought my 91/30 (for $99) because the action was VERY smooth (something you really need to look for as they vary GREATLY!), got it home and found out from its stampings that EVERY piece of the gun was made in a different year, plant, or even country! Bad thing is that the whole gun was in beutiful condition, UNTIL I cleaned all the grease out of the bore. It's pitted up worse than a gravel road. It'll still manage under 3" groups with the factory sights every time at 100 yards. And that's equal to my M44 that had never been fired, and has a spotless bore (unissued, excellent condition, $129)
$129 is not an out of the ordinary price for ANY model of Mosin Nagant. You need to look over their inventory and see if those particular rifles are worth even a penny. Before you frown on the 91/30's for being as long as a telephone pole, let me say they are the best balanced rifle I've ever held in my hand! And handle BEUTIFULLY! Even better than their carbine siblings IMO.
If you pick a good one... Their SUPER fun to shoot!!! ;D And easily my favorite of all to take to the range for a day of GIANT muzzle flash, and loud noise fun! ;D ;D ;D Good luck! It'll put meat on the table!
Check out the web sites, you'll learn more than you ever wanted to know! Dont bother buying the book on them. I have it, everything in the book is on the web. Tom is of knowledge on these weapons as well.
-
Good post, Badger! I've been eyeing those Big 5 guns too, so this is something to think about.

I must have been really lucky. I have (2) M44's and (3) 91/30. I bought them online sight unseen, all 5 have stamped matching numbers and I can't tell if any of them had ever been fired....... and for $69 and $79 each

Just to scare the hell out of you, I ran into this site while researching the Moision. Fairly informative, but DAMN! and YIKES! and double DAMN! ;D Some folks need a hobby.

That is the hobby.
Then you need to start on Swedish Mausers.
Here is a couple sites to get you started.

Disclaimer: Warning! Swedish Mausers are highly addictive. The poster assumes no liability for running amuck, spending more money than what you have, and becoming obsessed with acquring enough Swedish Mausers to outfit a platoon. Welcome to surplus rifles. Good luck you are on your own. You have been warned.

What was the URL for the sight you bought them on?

But a Springfield is $700 not $70. ;)
times that by 10 in aus, if you have the right category licence that is!.
$70 I would buy several that way you have better odds of finding a real shooter ;D and more is definately merrier.

If its legal I will buy and ship for you sledge, you pay shipping, no charge, all I want is $10 to buy as six pack afterwards. If it's Aussie legal, I will acquire, box and ship the damn thing, just to put my finger in the eye of government that doesn't trust it's citizens to be armed (Hell I don't care if it isn't Aussie legal as long as I can't be extradited as I don't have any particular desire to know what kangaroo tastes like or get my ears cut off in D block). No offence, because I respect your nation, but the gun confiscation bill ya'll passed is grounds to start thinking about the extended camping trip. Its weird, different cultures have different tipping points about when the state has gone too far. Sometimes its foriegn policy, sometimes abortion or women's right's or civil rights, sometimes guns. I think it will seem strange to Aussies, but natural to Americans, when I say that if the feds say I have to turn in my guns, they'll get them when they're empty. That's not tough guy BS either, its just the fact that the right to keep and bear arms is pretty much ingrained in our culture. Its how we grew up and if you challenge that in a serious way, you have a problem. Again, different cultures, different laws. :-\

Thank you for your kind offer, you know I am nearly tempted to take you up on the offer however I would not submit you to the BS paperwork war that would ensue in order to get the damn thing here, it would be cheaper to buy one locally.
BTW I agree with your sentiments, hopefully one day not so far away there will be enough people sick and tired of the BS in this country to stand together (another Eureka Stockade).
Besides I think we have an extradition teaty with the US after all we got a guy called Don Lane and you guys got Helen Reddy and that was in the 70's ;D
A wise american once said a little revoloution every now and again is a good thing, although saying such things now makes the natives nervous.
PS its not mandatory to chop ones ears off in D block, its more important to have a soap on a rope! LOL
PSS re nagants check the price

Sledge,
That is a 91/30 sniper rifle. They go for more than the regular MNs here, too.
They are list in SOG for $399 (regularly $495), the M44 carbine is $179, regular 91/30 is $70, 91/30 with Hex receiver $80, there are others but that is the price range.

Absolutely, Sledge. Not to mention the paperwork y'all have to go through.
I have a C&R license that cost me $30. Paperwork was minimal to get it and it is good for 3 years. With this license I can buy an MN and have it shipped TO MY DOOR!

Its basically all about the scope.... The bolt with the bent handle is like $80 but the original scope is about $300+
*The bottom line here is that unless you really really really want to buy the Nagant, just wait. They are really easy to find and the "on sale" price you are being tempted with is not really that great. If you decide later on that it is something you want to buy, it will be easy to track one down and you can probably do so for a better price.
-
Pick up a copy of Shotgun News next time you go the a book store. More people selling "excellent" grade Nagants in there than you can shake a stick at. Prices start at about 60 bucks, go into thousands for the real collectables. If you have a C&R you can order them dirt cheap, and get discounts for ordering three or more!
Want ammo?

Are there other surplus guns that are worth anything that are around that money?
-
You can find plenty of M48 yugo mausers for about 89.99 and up. Some make really good shooters and ammo is plentiful. I bought a couple because the price was right and at the time i didnt have the money i have now.

I tend to agree Eric. I got excitted by the price, but after looking at them with a bore light I found they were not all they were cracked up to be. I'd still like one, but I think I'll wait (unless Wednesday's shipment looks better...... I know, its a disease, don't mock me ;D).

If you dont have one already, start working on getting your C&R. You'll save a LOT of money with it!
