A good explanation of how to use reality and thoughtful consideration to address emotions, i.e. being concerned about "losing it all" in the open carry debates vs. proven examples that show hiding out is not the answer and loses you (us) ground.
I have always believed that if we would politely go away...we would go away. Now I've never heard anyone say that in that way in a memorable way, but I think that thought is in the ten ring.
I have never subscribed to the "getting along" tactic of trying not to disturb someone as a mass tactic to make people feel comfortable as a venue to protect a way of life. If it's a way of life...be yourself and let the offended person deal with their irrational fears..which was well spoken by Michael in the podcast. If we politely adjust our lifestyle to make someone happy and comfortable we have lost our lifestyle and they have exerted a "force" on us that keeps in line with their thinking.....why would we want to offer up our way of life for someone else's inferior way of life (being fearful of, whatever).
So, I'm for open carry. I think I need to wear my double rig in the yard cutting grass to break it in...I've been saying I was going to do that for some time, now it's getting cool enough and...it's been about 3 years, time to get crackin'.

Funny thing how when you start to CCW you think everyone can see it. When you OC, everyone can. Then you realize that most people are very oblivious.

Bidah...true statement...every first-time concealed carry person feels like they have a big red "CCW" tattooed on his or her forehead. After about six or seven months, the tattoo seems to fade away. The surprising thing about open carry is how few people notice the gun at all.

Ladies and Gentlemen I will preface my comments by saying I am very much in favor of Open Carry so if this taints the rest of my comment you may stop here if you like.
Open Carry in my best observation is pure honesty. When I wake up and put my pants on my firearm starts its day with me and we are together until I go to work or back to bed. It is who I am and it plays a large roll both in where I go and how I conduct myself. I feel very confident in saying that I would be a different person if I was not an avid shooter and interested in both the well being of those I love and myself. Concealed carry is great in that it allows me to do this but it hinders my other personal traits and that is honesty. I am an honest person and don't like the idea of hiding such a large part of who I am. Knowing that being involved in my own well being and that carrying this tool has altered my life for the better gives me this evangelistic urge to try and convert others to the belief of personal responsability. I do not like the feeling of hiding something that without me is as useless as the holster it is carried in. There is an honesty in OC, a truth that allows people to either distance themselves from you because of differing beliefs or to ask questions that could potentially lead them on a path of discovery for themselves.
Aside from this personal belief, lets talk facts. A Concealed Carry Permit, or License To Carry Firearm is exactly as described. It is a permission slip, or a compliance license to do what the US Constitution says is a God(ess) given right. I do understand that some states have "Shall Issue" laws in place, but it still amounts to you asking your local officials to issue you a piece of paper/plastic that allows you to do what you had the right to do at birth. In such times of econimic strife it would certainly be nice to not need to tie up funds in programs that issue such redundant and ignorant hardware.
Now I can hear some people now, "Aww JD thinks its ok that criminals can OC guns then since his ideal world does not involve a check system."
I got some news for you, criminals do carry guns. Criminals do buy, sell and use firearms in some of the very same ways that you or I do. You cannot stop that, if you could then we should all turn in our firearms because that would mean gun control works. The truth is, gun control does not work and the only people that get these licenses or permits are those who most likely have no intention of commiting crimes. I for one despise the idea of allowing the .Gov to feel it has the power to issue me a permit/license to do what the US Constitution says I can already do in spite of them or more to the point because of them.
Enough of that, closing argument time.
Now I am not ignorant of the fact that OC is a new-er movement and just like the Openly Gay movement or the Equal Rights movement for women and blacks you are going to have casualties. People have been arrested and charged with disordly conduct (and other) and have temporarily lost their license/permit to carry concealed. To my best knowledge everyone who has been charged with anything or who has had their license/permit revolked has won their court battle and have retained their permits/license. Did it cost money? Sure it did and a lot of it, but there is no gain to be had without a cost. To my knowledge no body has been killed or hurt while OC'ing and don't see that as an immediate danger but who knows how radical those who array themselves against us will get. They are terrified at the thought of every American carrying a gun in plain sight because then they can't pretend like their side is winning.
I want to end my post with the praising Mr. Bane and his bravery in taking on the topic.
Sir, you are a very brave man to take the stance you have on a topic so heated and so controversial with the position you have in both the media world and the shooting industry. I applaud your open mindedness on open carry and hope that maybe you can have some more information on the topic for those new to shooting.
You might just change some minds and rally us all to fight against them and not amongst ourselves.
For more information on the Topic, many arguments and facts can be found at:

I've already talked to Mark Walters at "Armed American Radio" This subject WILL be coming up this week.
http://armedamericanradio.org/2009/09/coming-up-on-aar-sunday-9-13-2009/
Mr. Massad Ayoob will be back on Armed American Radio. The author of In The Gravest Extreme, The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry, and The Ayoob Files among many others, Massad is also the founder of the Lethal Force Institute. One of the nations foremost experts in the field of personal defense, Mr. Ayoob brings his many years of experience to Armed American Radio listeners.
I will also be joined by the three hosts of Best Defense-Survival from The Outdoor Channel, Mr. Michael Bane, Mr. Rob Pincus and Mr. Mike Janich. These three men have been educating gun owners and the general public for years on national television and they’ll be HERE to discuss self-defense and survival techniques that you and your family MUST know in today’s volatile world.
Also scheduled to appear is Mr. Mark Craighead of Crossbreed Holsters. Mark will be here to discuss the finer points of one of the finest CCW holsters ever designed, the Super Tuck. If you’re like many CCW holders, you may have made the decision to carry a smaller caliber gun for comfort. Mark will tell us how we can carry and conceal a full sized weapon for personal defense and do it COMFORTABLY.
Making his FIRST and certainly not his only appearance on AAR will be my good friend and colleague Mr. John Higgs, noted copy editor and author of “The Bug Out Book”. John has given his advice to national televison audiences and will be here to pass on his knowledge to YOU!

Other than the fact that products will be offered, what is the target audience of this star studded event ?
-
It's a weekly radio show, Put out by Concealed Carry Magazine. If you go to the link in my last post you can check out past shows.
Previous guests have included Kathy Jackson of www.corneredcat.com , Mossad Ayoob , and our own MB with Rob Pincus and Mike Janich. The products advertised are not specifically gun stuff, I don't even pay attention to them.
-
Kathy has done a fine job of furthering women and guns , she has my respect. I will check it out.

I listened to the podcast today Rob and Mike were on in the first hour, MB was stuck on a plane and could not make it, also on was our new member Mr. Higgs, and Mossad Ayoob with whom the host addressed the subject of how we would be most effective addressing the open carry debate with the rest of the public. One thing that was brought up that has not been addressed was that the Gay rights "in your face" approach was assisted by a friendly media which we definitely do NOT have.

The media wasn't all that friendly in the beginning.....look at how gays were portrayed in '70's TV shows like SOAP or THREE'S COMPANY....
....but, we DO have one advantage....the Internet.....
