Title: Fox Problem.. Need Help!
Post by: Jackel on September 04, 2009, 12:36:47 AM
hay guys. got a fox problem.
i have seen this one scratching around my chicken enclosure but have never had a gun handy to top him. i have decided i would try and get him tonight but was unsure of how to attract him so he can get a head full of lead.

he always seems to pop up at random times of the day and i need to work until 6pm.

all help appreciated.

Oh this will be a fun topic. Asking this board how to deal out mayhem to small furry creatures. ;D
Seriously the first question is how serious do you want to get about this? Is it sport or work? If you just want the thing dead I'd go for either a trap or poision. Obviousley you can't use the latter if you have pets. If you do, get a have a heart and bait it with a dead chicken.
If you want to amuse yourself though.....I would reccomend a caffinated beverage, a good vantage point from your house or barn and a chicken tied up or in a cage. It SHOULD (but God knows since chickens aren't the brightest of creatures) make a racket. If it doesn't try a predator call. I'd start just after dusk or an hour before dawn. (two in the morning works a well since you are obviously are awake now ;D). Then simply apply your favorite caliber. Give us an after action report.

I'd suggest trapping.  Do you have any leg holds or snares?  Do you have dogs or cats that could get into a trap by mistake?

First, if you have pets they need to be kept inside while you do what ever you decide.

I also would use a trap, snare or even a live trap. A can of dog,cat food or tuna would work. Predator calls work great if you want a shoot at  it.  Your chicken house is on the fox's daily rout, so it shouldn't be to hard.

If you decide to use a trap give me PM and I'll help ya out.

Wait until 3:00-5:00am (sleep in until then, you wont be seeing him), crack half a dozen eggs on the ground outside the chicken house where you can get a shot.  He'll stand over the eggs long enough to get a clean shot.  Problem solved.

Sound like I've done this before?  Uh huh.  ;D

.22's work fine for head shots.  But it'll be fairly dark, scopes magnify light, and may help (you make the call).  If he's really been making you mad, use a 12 gauge!  Just keep your distance (his sniffer works!).

Title: Live Bait
Post by: Rastus on September 06, 2009, 09:51:05 PM
You've got the right bait.  Just tie a string around the foot of a couple of chickens and keep a sharp eye out.

No tellin' what you might call in with live bait.

If your within 50 feet he'll either smell, or hear you.  Do much more than breath, and the little demons can pick up on both.  Their eye sight is good enough that he's likely to see you easier than you think.

They can be a real challenge!  But then I was sitting at the base of a tree eating beef jerky one deer season and a red fox ran in through the underbrush so fast he actually stepped in my lap before either of us knew what happened!  He kept running on past, and I about crapped my pants!  Teriaky seems to be a favorite flavor! ;D

If the coyote that's giving you problems is a male, it will attract him. Either way it should help getting him.

Trapping is the most effective way to get things done... not as much fun as a head shot, but it will get you the end result you are looking for.

Crazy like a fox indeed!

That was ruled out since he has dogs.

You can buy red fox urine, supposedly taken from a vixen in heat. Stinks like hell though (and yes I have a bottle in my hunting gear.). But it should attract if hes a male, or possibly a territorial vixen. I kicked up (NO not literally.) a red fox hiking behind my grandma's house once. Didn't have a gun or hunting license though...

Is the thing dead yet? I thought you were all hard core Aussie Spec Ops and you're getting your ass kicked by a 20 pound animal. What's up with that? HTFU and get it done! Dingos ate my baby indeed! ;D ;D ;D

i used the coyote piss to scare the fox off because its the bigger predator.

in regards to Fq13 i cant exactly go and top his mother can i? i know its getting the better of me but im thinking of paying one of the teenage kids at the farm to find him and top him, will be cheaper than all the beer i would need to sit out there every night.
