UNIONTOWN, Pa. — A Pennsylvania history buff who recreates firearms from old wars accidentally fired a 2-pound cannonball through the wall of his neighbor's home. William Maser, 54, fired a cannonball Wednesday evening outside his home in Georges Township that ricocheted and hit a house 400 yards away. The cannonball, about two inches in diameter, smashed through a window and a wall before landing in a closet. Authorities said nobody was hurt.

State police charged Maser with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

No one answered the phone Friday at Maser's home. He told WPXI-TV recreating 19th century cannons is a longtime hobby. He said he is sorry and he will stop shooting them on his property, about 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

I spent a lot of summers in the Uniontown area when I was a kid.  Fun place.  Very rural.

Damn ... I was hoping the neighbor's reply would have been "I hope the cops let him keep it, because I'd really like to give it a try."

Bad accident with a fortunate outcome.  However, it sounds like he shoots on his lot quite a bit.  Shows the need for safety, because accidents happen.  In case you are wondering, I'm trying to hold him responsible, but also show that it could have been a rare accident instead of total lack of care and caution.

I hope that if it is the rare possibility of an accident they don't nail his hide to the wall over it.

Now back to the real side of me ...

Where the hell do I find one of them thar things?

this was no accident, this was negligence.  Accident emplys this was no ones fualt and could not have been avoided.  This is 100% his fualt and could have been avoided.

what diffrence does that make?

he shot it in the direction of some one elses house( 400 yds away)

he either knew the house was there and didn't think he would hit it, or didn't know it was there.  either way its negligence.

Did he shoot in the direction of the house?  The ball richetted and went at the house.  Maybe there was a house over the hill, or maybe it was off to the side.  I didn't take the guy off the hook for responsibility, but gave him some slack for it being an isolated incident in his shooting history.

Every shooting range faces this possibility, and they all do their best to keep the worst from happening (some are better at it than others).  This guy just had his first* oops on his private range.  I'm just hoping they don't nail his hide to the wall for this one.  Heck ... Let's treat him like a drunk driver, give him a slap on the wrist, all his guns and ammo back, and mark it up as "he's a nice guy, wonder when we'll see him again."

* I'm saying "first," because they way this was reported I'm sure it would have been mentioned if there had been other situations with this landowner.

Watch the video, It is clearly stated that this bank has served as a safe backstop for years but this shot ricocheted off a rock.
No negligence involved at all, purely bad luck.

unless the house was behind him, it was no accident.    180 shooting plane, thats something we should all know about.

ricochettes are something you have to expect to happen.  they don't happen often, but they do happen.  I've seen more then a few come backs in my time on the range.

its like when you were a kid, firing off air rifles to the west to try and hit a kid you dont like.

the next day

"local man was hospitalized with injuries to the head, witnesses say he just screamed for no apparent reason. he will give a statement later today."

Wonder howmany grains of BP he had stoked in it?
I know a fellow with a 1/4 scale civil war howitzer that will throw a 2" ball of lead about 3+ km (2 mile in US speak) using about 700gr of BP

Unfortunate accident, hopefully charges will be dropped or let off with a warning, one thing I bet he doesnt get to keep shooting cannons at home though  :(
