Title: Hog Hunt III
Post by: Hazcat on September 14, 2009, 08:09:19 AM
Went hog huntin on Sunday with Crusader Rabbit and HazJr.  We started in stands at zero dark early and sat until about 8:30.

Skeeters were thick and BIG!  I saw a bunch of cardinals, couple of squirrels and one fawn.  Other than that I have bug bites to show for it!

Crusader got his hog during this time...I'll let him tell ya about it.

When the guide came around to pick us up he got me first, then we picked up HazJr (also nada) then Crusader who had one on the ground. So a decision had to be made of how many more we would get and who and how they would be taken.

HazJr wanted to run with the dogs and take one by stabbin so I decided two hogs would fill the freezers and after that I was along for the ride.

Wasn't very long and the dogs were hot on the trail of a pig and then we heard 'em baying and the pig squealing.  The dogs grab 'em one in front by the ears and one in back by the leg.  These dogs are TOUGH!

We go crashing through the brush and the guide grabs the pig by the hind legs.  We get the dogs out (damn hard to get em to let loose!) and HazJr steps in on the pigs head and puts that 18 inches of bayonet right behind the shoulder and shoves.  It squealed like a....well, it squealed a lot. ;)  and starts to jerk and twitch.  HazJr twists the blade but the sob will not die!  He pulls out, lines up again and sticks that blade clear through!  DRT!

+100 to Haz junior. I went through that weirdness when I was his age (note to junior, we old farts use guns for a reason) and I survived. I'm glad he's safe. Just remind him that its a great story to tell the guys, the chicks, not so much. BUT, if he finds a girl who's into it...... ;D

They seemed to be a mixture of breeds.  All hunting bread but some looked to be part bull or pit and some seemed to be part lab or other retriever.  All friendly and loved doing what they did.  I really like watching them work.

Seriously Haz, I am an old school redneck with a long pedigree. I am all about Southern tradition. BUT, and BUT sending a teenager into a dog fight with a 300 ilbs hog, a half dozen catch dogs, a sharp blade, slick mud and a a bunch of yahoos is not a good idea. I'm not judging, because I've been there, done that and got the pig ##$% on my T shirt. Its just that I would seriously, now that he's gotten it out of his system, encourage the use of a gun or bow. Stuff happens fast with six pit bulls, a 16" razor sharp blade, slippery mud and a pissed off wild hog. My advice as a non parent is, you've done it cracker style once, now do it like normal folks. ;D
FQ13, who does wish the best for Haz junior

What a coincidence. I just saw a Tred Barta episode last night, where he hunted hogs with a knife. The hogs weren't real big, but the excitement was still there. There was an strange part where they showed him "sighting in" his knife on a cactus. It was a pretty enjoyable episode. I think they said the dogs were Ktulus, or Katulas. Something like that. They were pretty tough looking, but still friendly.

I'll bet Haz Jr. would enjoy watching that and reflecting on his own hunt.

I hear Tred is pretty sick with cancer and in a wheelchair. Anybody know anything about how he's doing?

NEW YORK – -(Business Wire)- The highly rated television series “The Best & Worst of Tred Barta” has taken a tragic turn as its host Tred Barta was struck last week by a spinal cord stroke just before completing filming of the final episode of the series. The final episode, which will be aired on the Versus Network later this year, will be an up-front and personal account of Barta’s fight to regain the use of his lower extremities that were left paralyzed from the stroke and how this will now relate to his ability and desire to continue to participate in wilderness and high seas adventures.

Barta, the icon of sports fishing and hunting, suffered the spinal cord stroke in mid-May and is currently under the care of doctors at Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colorado.

Benefit Dinner Schedule and Information (.PDF flyer)

"I made it in the hospital through the bleakest, worst times of my entire life. I was in there for 90 days. I made through 80 of them before they broke me! I just couldn't do it anymore," says Tred.

According to Tred's wife Anni, the last high dose of chemotherapy destroyed his kidneys and some liver function. He suffered major depression. Anni and Tred finally decided it was more important to get his head turned around than anything. So Tred – at long last – returned home. Since then, things have brightened dramatically. His kidneys look like they're responding positively. His most recent blood tests show improvement in his Waldenströms. The local Shaw Cancer Center is trying something new – a milder treatment that can be done at home one day a week for several months, then once a month forever.

Not surprisingly, Tred decided that quality of life is more important than aggressive, big-name, big-city treatment regimens. He just wants to be home. And since he returned, he has gotten his fight back! Certainly, Tred has a long road ahead yet, but he finally has hope and optimism again and that is huge right now from where he and Anni have been. Tred is once again shooting his bow and shotgun from his wheelchair. His TV crew arrived today to shoot his next show and life is heading in the direction of normal – within Tred's new context. He honestly hasn't been this upbeat since this all started.

Anni is searching for live-in help for Tred as she can't handle the heavy lifting, household management and well – Tred – all by herself. In addition, the Bartas face some staggering medical bills: As you can imagine, rebuilding every door, adding an elevator, completely redoing a handicapped bathroom, adapting the truck so he can drive, ramps, a powered wheelchair – it all costs megabucks and not surprisingly, health insurance provides them with $1,500 over a lifetime for these maladies. So anyone who feels inclined to make a tax-deductible donation to help the Bartas return to some semblance of real life can contact for Tred Barta at the Vail Valley Charitable Fund, PO Box 1275, Avon, CO 81620, 970-845-6339. Or Donations can be made by credit card at www.vvcf.org, again mention for Tred Barta.

Hey Haz--

Here's a link to some more of our Pig Hunt Pics.  Got a shot or two of Haz Jr's stuck pig.  I know... Next year he'll chase one down on foot and bite its neck out with his teeth.  Me???  I'll continue to get my pig the normal way...  with a high-powered rifle.

That might be a $100,000 picture right there, Haz. Send it to Miami with his application for a fencing scholarship! Didn't think you were serious when you said he wanted to take a hog with a blade. Wow! If I send down my matching bayonet for Jr, perhaps he can bone the pig out before it hits the ground next time. Congats to the hunter.

Mac,

I used a grinder to put an edge on it then gave it a few strokes on a whet stone so it was sharp and pointed for the hunt.

I think that blade has a really nice balance and feel to it.  It would be good to fight with.

Catahoula Leopard dogs are very cool. Smart and good looking, a combo of hound and catch dog. The spear thing is pretty common. You can find hog spears on line. Its a lot smarter than a knife as your odds of getting bitten or gored are lower. Still, I like these wacky things we call guns. ::)

Had a friends son , about 15, stalk a Canadian Goose, and dispatch it like a farm boy getting a Sunday Chicken from the coop while camping in the Uwharrie National Forest.

If that picture of HazJr. gets around, he'll be on the same list as us Bible carrying, gun/bayonet carrying, right wing "extremists". ::)

Okay, here are some details.  The dogs aren't Argentine or pit bull.  They are Southern Cur Dogs and they simply hate pigs.  It is in their breeding to go after pig.  That's what they do.  The dogs are about the size of a large beagle and have a similar look.  They are friendly to people, and just love their work.

I got my pig at the crack of o-dark-30 while sitting in a tree stand and wiping 1-liter mosquitos off my face and the back of my neck.  We'd all sprayed down with some Cutters, but these bad boys didn't seem to notice.  I heard the corn feeder spin some corn, but it was still so dark I couldn't make it out.  As the morning just started to brighten, I heard pig noise and saw three coming in out of the gloom.  Two of 'em were black and nearly invisible.  The one I shot looked like he was wearing camo, but there was enough lightness in his color for me to actually see his outline.  What I couldn't see was the blade sight on the front of my 30-30 Model 94.  But, I knew where the pig was, and I knew where I was, and I knew how the meeting would end.

I made the shot and heard the squeal and saw the pig drop.  Turned out I hit him through the backbone at the top of the shoulders.  But I didn't know that at that moment.  Dark, you know?  So, when I saw the pig trying to stand, I got out my .44 Mag Redhawk and hit him two more times.   That was all for that pig.

+10 on the cur dogs! I don'tknow if they are even recognized as a breed or not, but they are darn good dogs and beat a pit for friendliness and stability every day. They aren't bred to fight, but to hunt. I would never want a pit, but would adopt a cur tommorow. I won't judge how you hunt, but, if you can hear the feeder......c'mon there are plenty of hogs out there, kill them how you want, but try to show a little style man ,its a matter of class. ;D

I agree Bryan, and I thought about deleting half of that post. The thing is, its a question of whether its sport or work. If you just want to eliminate destructive feral hogs that damage crops etc, its work and there are no rules. If you want to hunt, this being sport, you should think about whether bait is the way to go. I have my opinions about hunting but try not to voice them in the in the interest of solidarity. My one bitch with TX. (which I love and would love to return to) was shooting deer over feeders. Its a crime here in Fl.and it never sat right with me. I owe you an apology Crusader, consider it given.

Actually, no, I fly fish. But that's just me, your mileage may vary. This is where I broke bad with crusader. Just because I choose to play the game a certain way, doesn't mean other ways are wrong if they choose different rules. I just prefer a different path. It doesn't make one better or worse. To each their own. I forgot that and for that I owe Crusader an apology (which I PMd him).

FQ12, I'm not trying to raz you, but we both know that there are some folk who would see a pig getting stuck and, in ignorance, have a problem with it.  I know you just have you own way, but at the same time, you respect others way of hunting.  I tell you, I've hunted for fun, and really went as old school as possible to put some sport in it.  And I've hunted for the meat and blasted them with little thought to sport.  Personally, I've never felt the urge to make a sport of ferals, I've got a irrational dislike for them. ;D  Hunting with dogs and bayonets is pretty sporting in my book, even if there's a feeder. ;)

A fly made to look like what the fish are eating in that particular area....BAIT?

I agree Bryan, and I thought about deleting half of that post. The thing is, its a question of whether its sport or work. If you just want to eliminate destructive feral hogs that damage crops etc, its work and there are no rules. If you want to hunt, this being sport, you should think about whether bait is the way to go. I have my opinions about hunting but try not to voice them in the in the interest of solidarity. My one bitch with TX. (which I love and would love to return to) was shooting deer over feeders. Its a crime here in Fl.and it never sat right with me. I owe you an apology Crusader, consider it given.

And here we agree. Hunt the way you want. Its your choice not mine, and we should support each other in our right to make that choice. I broke bad by being judgemental and have been scolded by Uncle Ted (Can he be cousin Ted instead, because the guys kind of scary, and I don't want him influencing my kids DNA that closely)?

Late to the thread........

Tell Haz Jr. congrats on the nice hog.

Also, when hunting in the stand, go to wally-world and get you a Thermacell......it'll keep the skeeters and other insects away.
They work and are worth every penny of the $23.
