By GREG BLUESTEIN, Associated Press Writer Greg Bluestein, Associated Press Writer – 2 hrs 40 mins ago
ATLANTA – Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday that U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst to President Barack Obama during a speech to Congress last week was an act "based on racism" and rooted in fears of a black president.

"I think it's based on racism," Carter said in response to an audience question at a town hall held at his presidential center in Atlanta. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."

The Georgia Democrat said the outburst was a part of a disturbing trend directed at the president that has included demonstrators equating Obama to Nazi leaders.

"Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," he said. "It's deeper than that."

Wilson, a South Carolina Republican, was formally rebuked Tuesday in a House vote for shouting "You lie!" during Obama's speech to Congress last Wednesday.

The shout came after the president commented that illegal aliens would be ineligible for federal subsidies to buy health insurance. Republicans expressed their disbelief with sounds of disapproval, punctuated by Wilson's outburst.

Tuesday's rebuke was a rare resolution of disapproval pushed through by Democrats who insisted that Wilson had violated basic rules of decorum and civility. Republicans characterized the measure as a witch hunt and Wilson, who had already apologized to Obama, insisted he owed the House no apology.

Wilson's spokesman was not immediately available for comment, but his eldest son defended his father.

"There is not a racist bone in my dad's body," said Alan Wilson, an Iraq veteran who is running for state attorney general. "He doesn't even laugh at distasteful jokes. I won't comment on former President Carter, because I don't know President Carter. But I know my dad, and it's just not in him."

"It's unfortunate people make that jump. People can disagree — and appropriately disagree — on issues of substance, but when they make the jump to race it's absolutely ludicrous. My brothers and I were raised by our parents to respect everyone regardless of background or race."

South Carolina's former Democratic Party chairman said that he doesn't believe Wilson was motivated by racism, but said the outburst encouraged racist views.

"I think Joe's conduct was asinine, but I think it would be asinine no matter what the color of the president," said Dick Harpootlian, who has known Wilson for decades. "I don't think Joe's outburst was caused by President Obama being African-American. I think it was caused by no filter being between his brain and his mouth."

Harpootlian said he received scores of racial e-mails from outside South Carolina after he talked about the vote on Fox News.

"You have a bunch of folks out there looking for some comfort in their racial issues. They have a problem with an African-American president," he said. "But was he motivated by that? I don't think so. I respectfully disagree with President Carter, though it gives validity to racism."

Carter called Wilson's comment "dastardly" and an aftershock of racist views that have permeated American politics for decades.

"The president is not only the head of government, he is the head of state," he said. "And no matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect."

So far I have been called a Nazi, an extremist, a racist, a terrorist, a political terrorist and I'm sure many others that I don't recall at this time.  I don't care what color somebody is.  I care about substance and values of which bHo and Carter have little if any.  Jimmy, quit trying to make a place for yourself in history, you already have it from your failed presidency.  Go back to Plains, GA and stay there with your mouth shut instead of opening it and spewing divisive racial spittle.

The hippie communist will always fall back on racism.  Three reason, it can never be proven or disproven, they can't lose, and we can't win.  Even if someone was racist, it doesn't make their argument less legitimate if its based on facts.  I'm going to tell all the self hating black folks, that don't like Obama, how horrible they are.  Carter should look back at the last few years and criticize his own people for their actions, if he can remember that far.

I believe that the "progressives" cry of racism every time there is an objection to the socialist agenda being rammed down our throats actually will damage race relations in this country.  Which is probably something they want.

My stance - I have no objection to the color of his skin but I strongly object to the color of his politics.

Very well put Ichiban.  +1 on your entire post.  I see no hope or change in this administration and his minons.  I only see further diviseness being nurtured by the likes of vitriol statements like Jimmy's.  Poor race relations is something they want as it gives them an agenda, a platform to preach from, and most important to them power.

And that is the real threat. Its like the idiots that compare Obama to Hitler, or call liberals communists or conservatives facists. They leech meaning from words and deny us the ability to name our enemy. George Orwell made the implications of this clear. Rather than being able to bring a specific charge against someone, you are reduced to making an inarticulate noise that will be interpreted as it will by the various factions of a dumbed down society. In short, rational discourse dies and force rules the day. I keep screaming about decorum, rules of evidence, not exagerrating the threat and apologizing when I cross the line. There is a reason for that. I maybe many things but stupid isn't one of them. I know damn well what happens to a society when civic discourse breaks down and I do not wish to go there.

A good many congress critters are lawyers, mostly from the defense side of the bar.  There is a saying among lawyers; When the facts are on your side, pound on the facts.  When the facts are not on your side, pound on the table.

Clearly Obama was lying, and Rep. Wilson called him on it.  The Kool-aid drinkers know that, so instead of pounding the facts, they are "pounding on the table," making a lot of noise to divert attention away from the facts.

The same Democrats who boo'd President Bush and accused him of lying in the House Chamber, are suddenly "shocked" by a congressman who is dissing the "office of the presidency."  May I suggest a bit hypocracy on their part?

Jimmy Carter, his ideas and statements are irrelevant.

Our nation, our culture, our way of life is under attack, from within.  Our Constitution is being ignored on a regular basis.  If patriotic Americans don't stand up to the left now, when shall we?  The time for civility and niceness is over.  It's time to take the gloves off.  We can be nice and polite while losing our freedoms and our nation.

Isn't Carter the president that signed over sociial security? I guess I'm one of your idiots FQ. What BHO is trying to do does remind me of what Hitler did 70 years ago. Ignoring what the people want and trying to take control of our rights and our lives by any means possible. He's using our money for his propaganda while covering his past. I do appreciate your opinion and you show me a side of issues I don't or wouldn't realiize at times. I enjoy hearing about your Austin days and share your elcectic taste in music. I may not be the smartest guy here, but I do know when someone is trying poke it up my ass like BHO and the Dems are now. You might want to check your rear view.

No, Johnson stole the trust fund, Clinton gave it to illegal aliens. Al Gore had to cast the tie breaking vote on that one.

RACISM - the new intimidation technique by the Left to quash decent.

It appears that Jimmy believes a black President cannot be criticized by white people.  Regardless of the fact that every President has been soundly criticized in all of past history.  Jimmy should know this first hand.

I guess Jimmy is finally proving for all to see just how stupid he really is and how bad a President he was.

I was watching the panel discussion on fox, on the Bret Baer report. One of the panelist reffered to Carter as "just a tired old man". I didn't catch the name of the panelist, and I didn't hear the rest of what he said because I was laughing so hard.

By the way. Before BHO was elected, I told anyone that would listen that BHO as president would be Jimmah's 2nd term. Thinking back to what happened in that period of time, looks like I was right.

IF Carter had any intelligence at all he would just be quiet.  Right now he is THE worst President we have ever had.  IF Carter shuts up and goes away he could be easily supplanted by the current resident of 1600 Penn Ave.

I live in a collage town.  I try to have intellectual conversation with people to broaden  my perspective.  What pisses me off is in a heated debate a person will throw the race card down.  Well I'm a Vietnamese American, I prefer American, I have my ethic roots.  cool more character for me.  But to claim that I am a racist against women rights because I don't support abortion.  Seems like a fallible statement.

Therefore, I concluded:

People who hide behind argument that I am a racist, don't have the ability to refute my argument.

That is a very serious charge to make about a former US President...... I conclude that since you are Vietnamese, your comment is based 100% on racial bigotry towards white people....... ;D ;D ;D ;D

*I personally can never be labeled as a racist by Jimmy Carter for my opposition to Obama....... because I am equally opposed to Jimmy Carter as I am Obama.

Not wanting to rain on anyone's parade here; but all this talk about republican this and/or democrat that, only serves to empower those of our rogue government -- that's gone wholly run-a-muck -- that is made up of these self same republicans and democrat representatives, to continue ensuring us of one thing: the total destruction of America by the international-global-banking families who've sold their souls to the devil; and to whom our elected politicians have sold out to for filthy lucre...and might I add, power...don't believe me: Obama is George W Bush's third term; just as George W. Bush was Bill Clinton's third and fourth terms going all the way back, to perhaps, 1913...

Where is the vocal opposition to this total take down of some 60% of Americans (the conservative, Christian, right-wing, the majority of Americans...) by the godless 1/3 that's both communist and amoral forcing us to participate and/or else - think swine/bird/1918 Spanish flu vaccinations quickly becoming mandatory under, naturally, under the color of law: and less we forget: to save the children...sigh...I mean, it's OK for Peanuts to come out and chime in about this or about that; but where's George W. Bush and/or his daddy in raising up vocal opposition to the total destruction of America by a 1/3 working with and through "Hussein" Obama from Kenya; and does not this absence bespeak of complicity at best; at worse, a Judas-Goat in the person of the two Bushes? Where's Bob Dole; where's anyone standing up and speaking against this communist take down of 2/3 of Americans by the global elites working that republican/democrat dialectic through our representative government?

Listen and/or don't listen to infowars.com and Alex Jones, Steve Quayle, et al who are cutting edge on exposing the global-banking-elites (and their families) working the very successful left right dialectic that's got Americans in mass bamboozled, at your own peril...

One last caveat would be remember Proverbs 21:31 that reminds us that we can do all toward preparing, but in the end our safety, and the safety of our loved ones, are in the hands of the Lord...

There are a bunch of tangents that shot out on this one.  C'mon folks, who even pays attention to anything Carter says.  Really?!  And another thing... Alex Jones?  Really?!

@piepaned I, too, live in a college town where the average 22 year old would fix the world if it wasn't for "the man".  I run into the same deal and for the most part avoid speaking of policy or current events with the dumb masses.  I find it easier to talk about concepts.  When unattached to modern context, freedom is nearly universal.  Once a thinking person agrees with freedom, the rest will fall into place.  Welcome to the forums.

One things for sure if this thread is any indication: not only is the left (commie side of America [30% - not counting the illegal influx...]) very much divided as "Hussein" Obama poll numbers along with the democratic/socialistic/commie controlled congresses' numbers show; but so to is the right (Christian, Conservative, Right-Wing [60% of the legal American population]) divided against itself...so America as a house from coast to coast is divided against itself: none of which could have ever happened without the republican/democrat dialectic that's keeping Americans divided -- George W. Bush is and was a Judas-Goat, campaigned and governed and was elected twice all under false pretenses -- without George W. Bush's treasonous traitor activities there'd be no treasonous traitor "Hussein" Obama who's now serving his first term; but is really George W. Bush's 3rd term...

G20 in Pittsburgh PA is living proof the global international bankers along with the government out of WDC are rogue and collectively criminal...http://tinyurl.com/yal92ba and the NWO is here now at the G20 in PA http://tinyurl.com/ca8drv

Thank God for folks like Alex Jones...who without his tireless efforts to educate Americans, and the world, about the way the game is being played to use our own elected politicians from the two main parties to destroy us by, we'd not be waking up in mass to such things as the H1N1 B.S. and the other power-grabbing efforts going on such as 1st Amendment, II Amendment, 10 Amendments, no-fly-lists, microchips, open boarders and all the rest... The Constitution that gives us our Constitutional Republic is dead and the whole Patriot Acts, DHS, FEMA, the collective whole of the federal government (and most states that took any federal government stimulus monies...) have now been turned on the American people; and again, never could have happened without the two Bushes, the two Clintons, Peanuts, Obama and the rest that allowed the international bankers into our nation via the back door (the federal reserve) with its fiat money schemes; and the dominoes that are now falling because the republicans and democrats are in bed with each other while we're all divided down here on the street where the welfare and illegals live...
