Title: What I have been up to
Post by: JC5123 on September 16, 2009, 11:53:28 AM
Got out with a friend of mine and took a break from the guns. Getting back into my old habits. Having a blast. I'm banged up and sore, and haven't felt this good in a long time.

Blindfolded, underwater, behind my back, and drunk! Got dared to try it at a party once. Climbers are famous for the stupid human tricks.

Glad to see there is another jackass out there. I learned to climb at Outward bound when I was 15 (my dad's attempt to toughen me up and give me an attitude adjustment, and for all the dads out there it worked, I highly reccomend it, even for kids who don't need a kick in the ass as its a very low key, no yelling program. The instructers let the mountains, cliffs and whitewater do the yelling. You either get it or you don't. It kind of defined my teaching style as well, show someone a cliff, they either climb down or jump off, either way you've done your job). Point is is I am scared spitless of heights and climb for just that reason. Its started at OB, became a pasion when I was lusting after a hot 20 year old junior rock climber when I was a college freshman. It got cemented in grad school when my very attractive thesis co-chair made me her climbing buddy since her car (a classic beetle) was in the shop for a couple of months for a refit. Anyway JC, rock climbing brings up fear, lust, pain and images of two very hot and sweaty women in sports bras and spandex. Not the most ratinal of hobbies, but Istill have my harness, Fir'es, 11mm rope and more

I think you mean HARD HEAD. As for something FQ said. Once upon a time when I was REALLY stupid we thought it'd be fun to Climb to the top of Devils Tower, and then parachute off. Everything when perfectly until we landed right into the arms (and handcuffs ) of the parks rangers below. Apparently you're not supposed to jump off. So FQ, it's not always either or, sometimes we dumbass kids go and do both!

And as for the girls in spandex.......I found a welcome ledge or two last weekend.  ;D

Cool pics. There's a place in Mineral Wells state park that I've always enjoyed hiking to and watching the rock climbers. I've never joined their ranks, and I'm clumsy enough I probably would end up hurt or dead if I did.

Its a blast Walter, and a great way to keep in shape and develop situational awareness as you literally bond with every square inch of rock looking for a toe hold. You learn to pay attention, improvise, adapt and overcome. In my case, you also learn to get over a child hood phobia about hights. Being 400 feet up at the sharp end of the rope is the best way I've found to not just spank, but kick the living crap out of your inner child (again I reccomend Outward Bound for all dads as its where I learned that lesson). Climbing is fun, a great workout, and very safe IF you treat it like shooting and check, double check and then triple check your gear before you do anything. One of my favorite college stories had to do with the dorm mate (next door) from hell. This girl was so neurotic she would make Woody Allen look normal. She ironed her sheets for god's sake. She lived next door to me and complained to our RA that I made too much noise when I grabbed my uniform off the hangers at 5 am and the metal hangers hit the cinder block wall. I finally had it. I arranged a "party" for our floor and made sure she, not me, got good and drunk. I then, at about 1 am strapped on my harness and rope, had my roomie (also sober) belay me. I exited my 8th floor window, shuffled across a four inch ledge to her window, knocked, and fell backwards. The screams were priceless. Yes I'm an A hole, but for gods sake she reported me for letting my hangers hit the wall, and I did climb up and give her a kiss. It was cease fire in our relationship. It also taught me about victory through superior fire power. Oddly enough, we acutally dated for a few weeks after that. I won't even pretend to understand how that happened.

It's altitude sickness. I've had it myself!
