I've sold several things on Ebay, and agree 100%. I think they exist because people have a "minimum acceptable sale price in mind", and are to DUMB to just make that number the starting bid! They think their drawing more bidders. Only problem is. If they were serious bidders they wouldnt be trying to pay $3 for a $5,000 item to begin with. So why waste serious buyers time with a retarded "mystery price"?!?! All you do is drive the guy who is serious enough to actually BUY what your selling to look somewhere else for the same item. >:(

Another example of where simple honesty is the best policy. If you want a hundred bucks or better, just say so. People will bid or not. Don't expect me to click from $20 to $30 etc until I hit the magic number. I bought a nice eotech on AR 15.com. The seller had two. He was upgrading to aimpoints. He asked $200 for in the box 512s. The sale lasted less than 30 minutes. He mailed the scope before he got my check. This was the most pleasant online buying experience I had, and what happens when people are just honest and don't try to play games with their auctions.

Gunbroker is bad for this as well. If I list something I will start it at what is my lowest acceptable price. If I don't get a bid, then maybe I need to adjust what I believe it should be.
Generally I will no bid on reserve stuff and just go for the honest guy, even if I think I might be paying more.

Thats the thing, just be honest. How hard is that? Its like we have developed a whole business culture based on marketing; sizzle (steak not included) shipping and handling extra, the "bonds" and "securities" are backed by an isurance company that is not required to maintain reserves to back the liabilities etc. It makes me want to scream. Not only is it dishonest, its also unnecessary. Say what you've got, name a price and folks will buy it or they won't. I sold several guns on this board. I did not dicker on the price, but I did offer a money back guarantee. Buy it, shoot it, and send it back to me clean if you don't like it, all you lose is the transfer fee. Five guns sold, no returns, and all as a result of simple honesty. When did this become an alien concept to MBAs? My Great grandad told me this when I was seven, "The secret to sucess in business, and in love is simple. You do two things son. Never promise more than you are prepared to honestly deliver. Always deliver what you promise. Do those two things and you will never have to apologize." The man died rich and happily married at 87, I think he was onto something. ;D
