Title: What sling do you prefer on your AR?
Post by: Walter45Auto on September 22, 2009, 11:48:13 AM
Title says it. Y'all know by now I'm building an AR, and I'm looking for suggestions. I saw one on Best Defense: Survival that Rob had on his that was changeable from Single point to two point that I liked. (Rob could you remind us which one that is?) I'm gonna get a single point sling mount to put on the gun so I'll have that Option if I ever want it, but I may just stick with a regular 2 point sling. So what are your suggestions far an AR 15 sling?

I'm not big on rifle slings, but I don't shoot NRA High Power either. With that said I really like the padded VTAC Sling that was shipped with my LWRC rifle. It is very comfortable, looks good, and fits well. This is the only photo I have of it, (bottom), but you can run a search on it and I'm sure you'll gather a lot more info.   Bill T.

VTAC sling hopping around the farm.

A USGI web sling (Garand or M14), or a 1907 leather sling is what I use for out hunting and Appleseeds.

I have an old GI nylon sling on my Bushmaster. It works fine.

I have Vickers Slings on the M&P and XCR. Very well made and designed.

I HAD a LaRue Tactical sling with clips on my Sabre/Stag until the clip let go in a training class doing transitions. The rifle ended up landing in a puddle.  Very un-cool!  It was the second one that the instructor had seen do that. No more quick clips on weapons for me.

I like the $5 army surplus slings because I'm cheap and they work.

I have a Blackhawk 3 point Swift sling but I've thought about a single point.  I've been doing more weak hand transitions and the sling will expand to allow for it but doesn't go back the other way very well.  Since I'm typically shooting 3-Gun I don't always need a sling but need to be able to transition between pistol/rifle and back.

The problem i have with Optics Planet is that they show they have something in inventory, but when you order it they end up not having it available.

Has anyone else run into this with Optics Planet?

I prefer the standard "GI" 2 point sling.

Ditto.  I have two & both have two-point GI cloth slings.  I have no interest in appearing "tacti-cool," I'm no longer crashing through doors wearing body armor and ninja stuff and I'm not planning a trip to Afghanistan any time soon, so for my purposes, the GI sling works perfectly.

For covert carry however, I discovered from one of the gun forums I belong to, what is called a "gig bag."  What that is, is a soft sided electric guitar case.  Someone sees a guy walking down the street carrying a gun case, there may be a call to 9-1-1 happening very soon.  Dumb, I know, but it happens.  See an old guy walking down the street with a guitar case on his back, and most folks don't give you a second look.  I got the kind that has back pack straps & outside pockets perfect for spare magazines.  I built up the inside with foam rubber to keep it's shape.  Set me back about $15.00.  Google "gig bag" and check them out.   Lots of colors and options.  I even fooled my gun savvy son, who thought the old man had gone over the edge and turned hippie.   8)

My dad padded a guitar case with foam for a folding stocked shotgun.  Fits his AK 47 perfectly too.

My set-up was a little different. I'll post pics IF my scope ever shows up. (order placed 2/1/09, still backordered)  :'( >:( ???
Anyway, I used a Blackhawk single point sling and sewed in a Midwest Industries quick release swivel that I have mounted on the quad rail just behind the gas block. This allows me to carry over the shoulder or in front, and the single point allows easy transitions from strong to weak side.
