Wait 'til you see the gun!

I'm really pissy about 1911s. The last one I personally spec'ed and babysat through the creation process ended up on the cover of AMERICAN HANDGUNNER a few years back as , "The Best 1911 Ever?" I think the Bruce Gray gun is better than that AH longslide.

Bruce has been building 1911s forever...if you do some looking around, you can see some of Bruce's masterpieces from the 1980s. I believe he's the best "forensic" gunsmith around, in that he has a profound understanding of the relationships betwene all the parts of a 1911. I've built up parts guns using really good parts...but I didn't end up with really good guns. Okay guns...but not wowwie-zowwie 1911s. A great 1911 is really more than the sum of its parts. Walt Rauch and I had a long conversation about that very thing a few months ago...how hard it is to actually hit that "synchronicity" with a 1911. He and I have handled some BIG DOLLAR 1911s that had all the bells and whistles but failed to jell into a masterful gun.

The list of makers who understand that is short...I would include Bruce, Bill Laughridge at Cylinder & Slide, Wayne Novak, Dick Heinie, and a few others. I presently have guns from Bill Laughridge, Dick Heinie, Wayne Novak and a Master-Grade gun Bill Wilson built for me back in the Old Days, which I put more than 100,000 rounds through and eventually had completely overhauled by Ross Carter (who worked with Bill on the orginal gun).

The Bruce Gray gun is the equal to any gun I own!

Entry forms go up next week (as soon as we get the small print in place).

It'll be a 30-day sign-up, followed by a brief, wild period of bribery, then Alf the Wonder Beagle will choose the winner. Alf, BTW. especially likes Timber Wolf brand kibble...

I've talked to John Paul at JP Enterprises about Giveaway #2...a World Class custom AR built to my spec, but hey, I'm sure you're not interested in one of those!!!

If bribes are truly allowed, let me offer up my Beagle bitch for Alf to have his way with.  She is fit, smart, and enjoys long walks on the beach with boy beagles that don't mind the sound of gunfire.   ;)

G'day Michael, and et al.,

Well done on the new project!  I applaud your efforts on exploring this alternative way of presenting information.  I hope you and your team great success with this.  I'm also looking forward to participating the upcoming giveaway.  Fantastic idea!  How did you ever get Bruce to find additional time to work this pistol up?  Nevermind, we are all glad it is possible.

Anyhow, Buddy < a.k.a the round, brown, hound >  our somewhat red headed beagle prefers the Pup'eroini snacks.  Hopefully, Alf will find that new flavor appealing!

Again we are cheering you on!  THXs!

Insace you guys are wondering.  My finger prints are all over the inside of that gun.  I actually did a portion of the trigger work and frame prep work while Bruce was whining about his elbows hurting.

That gun is a shooter's wet dream if I do say so myself.  We spent tireless nights working on it and many bleary early mornings trying to excede "Pissy Boy Bane's" standards.

After completing the arduous task of building the "Sistine GSR", Bruce and I threw the gun into my truck and sped off the the local range with 200 rounds of ammo with the intention of proofing the results of our labor.  Unfortunately 193 of the rounds in the truck were 9mm, so we had to buy the additional ammo at the range.  The GSR fired flawlessly from the first shot to the last.  We tried limp wristing it, we tried death gripping it, but we still couldn't get it to malfunction.

If I could, I'd try to win the gun, but since my boss built it, I'm not eligable.

Oh and one more thing.  Grayguns, Inc.  guarantees the workmanship of our pistols for as long as you own the gun.  If there's any issue with our work for as long as the winner owns the gun, we'll repair it for free, for life.

The gun was in process for a few weeks.

That GSR would make a great single stack and ltd 10 gun for USPSA use.  I personally think it would be a bit of a shame to use that gun as anything else, being as it was built to bea shooter, but it would work perfectly as a USPSA gun.

I mean, it's still a great gun even though Flork licked it!

We're getting down to it...there's been a few problems — aren't there always...welcome to the Internet! — with the capture software. Marshal and I are finishing up the video presentation for the GIVEAWAY today. It's our Number 1 priority this week.

Hey Flork, in addition to the LaserGrips, i got Aluma-Grips to do a one-off custom set of BLUE CAMMIE grips for the gun!  Cool!

Michael,

I saw the pics, those grips look absolutely sweet.  I wish I could get my hands on that GSR again so I could fondle it again.

As for licking the GSR, I only did it once and I wiped it off with my sleve......Ok just kidding, but still, it's sweet.

Later.

Okay, ever'body stand back.  The winner of the Bruce Gray Custom GSR 1911 .45 giveaway contest has seen the video, read the rules and completed the entry form.

It's mine!

I know it's mine, 'cause (1) I've been playing the Oregon lottery for ten years (it's my pension plan) and never won a cent ... I'm due!, and (2) I went to Open Division in USPSA competition 3 years ago because I can't see iron sights any more, so naturally what I really need is another iron-sight 1911.

Oh wait, there's (3) that's one beautiful pistol.  I want it, real bad.

I've been talking up DRTV on my Cogito Ergo Geek blog, but I'll be real quiet until April 14, now.

No reason to clutter up the down-home deal on the drawing by encouraging other folks to enter.

Here's reason-why-I-deserve-this-gun (4) - I don't need to hide a new gun in my gunsafe for 3 months and then tell SWMBO that "Oh that old thing, I've had it for years".

It's free!

What a concept!

Thanks, Michael. [blush for the camera]

We got you covered, my friend. Your entry was registered 4/4/2007 8:54:00 AM EST.

Double entries do not disqualify. For every entry, the system checks for previous entries and only the first entry goes into the hat at the NRA annual meeting.

Very nice gun.

My lovely wife spends a few hours a day filling out entries in all the sweepstakes she can find on the internet, and tonight about 20 minutes before 24 came on she said come look at this site and I was hyped about the site and the videos. After 24 I came back and was going to check out the gun she entered me for and WOW What a beautiful weapon!

I was all hyped about the site and ready to go to my normal forum and praise the videos now I will have to wait until I get back from the NRA Convention.

If I win can I just pick it up in St Louis?

8,000 contestants!!!!!  There's only 581 members here. What happened to this being a contest for DRTV members?  Seems like this was opened up to the world at the NRA meeting and became a Sigarms promotional event and not a DRTV one.   Sigarms now has 8,000 people to target for their marketing literature. That's pretty disappointing as we were led to believe that this was for the DRTV community.  I wonder if the winner was even a DRTV member prior to the contest drawing?

Sounds like sour grapes to me. I don't recall anything being said about having to be a member . Hell 1 in 8000 sounds like pretty good odds for any giveaway of value.

Actually, if you go back and watch the video where Michael introduced the contest, it is very clearly a contest for Down Range Television members.  Nothing was ever said that it would be a contest opened up to thousands of people attending a convention.  I just don't like the way it was portrayed as it essentially became a Sigarms target marketing effort to collect as many names as possible for future mailings.....and that's fine if that's what it is, just call it that from the beginning as opposed to a special contest for DRTV members.

Wrong...I would watch the video again if I were you.  There is no doubt that this was a DRTV contest.   The opening slide says "A DRTV Giveaway" and Michael even says at the end of the video that in order to be eligible go to the Down Range Television site and sign up.  Seems like everyone on this site should have enjoyed odds closer to 1 : 500.......not 1 : 8,000.  The contest was clearly never meant to have such a limited scope as Sigarms wanted a large target marketing list for future mailings.  They were able to gather the big contestant numbers at the NRA meeting.  Again, it's not important, I just don't like the way it was portrayed....it's only ever about the sales.

And I would wager that you were invited from the sigforum to come over to DRTV and enroll for the contest as a DRTV member.

The point is you had to come to DRTV in order to enter the contest....regardless if you received a formal invitation or not.  The contest was here and nowhere else, which has been my only argument all along.  It was for DRTV members, not for convention goers willing to complete a form for Sigarms.

Perhaps after you master the art of spelling and grammar you may actually come to the realization that you succeeded in making my point.  You needed to join the DRTV CONTEST through the DRTV WEBSITE.  I'm glad you were able to finally comprehend what I have been saying.  At least I think you get it.

Michael, that's seems to be what the confusion about the giveaway was in the first place, that it was initially advertised as only for the members participating in the Downrange.tv forums.  If the rules changed mid stream, then they changed, you own the board and set the rules.  The fact that you even held a giveaway to generate interest in the sight was good marketing.  And as always  Downrange.tv will still a good source of entertainment for me....

Hi guys,

I 've been reading all of these posts and I see there is some confusion about the giveaway.

First, Sigarms does not have 8000 people in their list of targeted advertising as a result of this.

The DRTV giveaway is/was an open contest marketed through DRTV and through the efforts of our sponsors. We have not... at any time... narrowed the participation to registered members of the DRTV forum. All the information that can be found on our site is open to the public, the same goes for the giveaway entries.

What is important to establish here is that Sigarms along with all the sponsors of this first giveaway have gone overboard for us to make this a success for DRTV. We also experienced that at the NRA convention last weekend.

The sponsors have not just given away their part of a package, but have also done their share of marketing the DRTV concept, which has the main purpose of joining sport shooters, gun owners in general and the gun industry to establish another platform of common interests. What we have experienced is that SIG along with all of our partners and future partners will do all they can to help us in working for the common cause, which includes preserving our rights. This includes the facts that we should be one big family no matter our field of interests (hunting, sports shooting, etc).

The giveaway is a small part of this big picture. We are not hiding the fact that giveaways are good marketing, not just for the sponsors and advertisers and DRTV. It is also one of many effective ways to round up fellow gun owners to a junction like DRTV where we want viewers, readers and forum members to find a reliable source of information.

Note that sponsors like SIG and their efforts drive traffic to DRTV where their competitors can and will be found. That is a non selfish contribution simply because they know that we all have to work together on so many levels.

Michael's main mission through his many media projects has always been to share good and reliable information about guns and all that is related to guns. I am one of many who share these objectives. We are both excited to work with the industry and fellow gun owners to achieve these goals.

Rest assured, Michael and I are already in the process of evaluating this first giveaway. An exclusive forum member giveaway is on the list of many ideas we are working on.

We are also excited to launch the next giveaway in cooperation with our new sponsors/partners and we know for sure that they will work with us with the same objectives as our sponsors of the GSR 1911.

We thank you all for spreading the word about DRTV and get ready for the next giveaway.

Good Lord people!  This was a magnificent offer from a blog that provides excellent vids, audio and advise FREE OF CHARGE and you're griping about how the owners go about promoting themselves so they CAN provide this service FOR YOU!

I was NEVER under the impression that only forum members had a chance.  IIRC MB and/or Marshall mentioned in comments here and there that they were promoting it as much as possible.  I as a small business owner myself, understand how terribly difficult it is to 'make a go' of it and appreciate all that they do for us.

Quit yer bitchin' and try for the next give away.

Good luck to all!

Thank you, Hazcat.

I would also like to note that I am a member in good standing of the Sig Forum, the Ruger Forum, the S&W Forum, the C&R Forum, Brian Enos' Forums and a number of others and have been for years.

It was never my intent to limit to Giveaway to members of the Forum...I'm not even sure such a thing can be done legally, although my lawyer is looking into it to see if we can do a "We're Sorry!" special giveaway. My apologies if you feel I misrepresented myself.

For future reference, here is the specific wording as required by law that applies to any and all Giveaways on this site:

Quote
2) Eligibility: This Sweepstakes is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States (excluding, without limitation, The District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and other US territories, and locales where handgun/firearms ownership is prohibited by law or ordinance), who currently reside in the US and who are 21 years of age or older at the time of entry. Employees, directors and their immediate families (parents, children, siblings, spouse) or members of households of Down Range Television and Flying Dragon Ltd., its affiliates, advertising, design, print production and publicity agencies and anyone connected with the production and distribution of this sweepstakes are not eligible to enter or be awarded a prize.

3) The winner of this sweepstakes will be required to have a valid driver's license or state-issued photo identification as proof of age and residency and will be required to complete an ATF Form #4473 and pass a NICS background check at his or her local firearms retailer that holds a valid Federal Firearms License. All firearms transfers will take place between Federal Firearms License holders and must be in compliance with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances for the recipient’s home location.

4) Failure to comply with each of these requirements will result in a forfeiture of the prize. Down Range Television and Flying Dragon Ltd. will not be responsible for any fees collected by the retailer to perform these services. Such fees shall be at the winner's sole expense. By entering this sweepstakes, participants agree to these Official Rules and to the decisions of the Sponsor, which are final and binding, in all respects. This offer is void where prohibited by law, and subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SWEEPSTAKES IF YOU ARE NOT LOCATED WITHIN THE UNITED STATES.

5) How to Play: In order to qualify, entrants must complete the online entry form at www.downrange.tv. Only one entry per person will be accepted. Multiple entries will be deleted. The Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, garbled, stolen, misdirected, returned, non-deliverable, illegible entries, unavailable network connections or transmissions, or problems of any kind, whether mechanical, human or electronic. All entries are the property of Down Range Television and Flying Dragon Ltd. and no entries will be acknowledged or returned.

In fact, for companies in a market society, it is indeed all about the sales. I can't get guns to give away because people like me, as much as I might wish that was the case! I get them because we offer the companies something in return. It would have been quantums easier to simple give away an out-of-the-box gun, as some other sites do. Instead, I opted to try and create the kinds of guns that I want to own.

Again, my apologies.

My hope is that you will all continue entering our Giveaways.

Michael ,

Personally, I want to say thanks for all the hard work on the give away. I'm sure most people don't realize all the work that goes into something like this.

The only thing that bums me out is thinking about all the fun I would have had shooting that gun, not to mention being the envy of all my friends.

Oh well, I look forward to the next one. Line forms to the left please...

Well at least all you owl hoots got to have a chance at it. :-\

I wanted to ..... but Marshal and Michael told me 'No'... I couldn't be eligible....
And No isn't a word I take kindly to, let me tell you! Nor is it a word that I will usually tolerate..
but in this case.. I did as I was told.. (http://www.cascity.com/howard/forum/cry.gif)

But I DID get to touch it and hold it in my hands.. and man oh man.. it was cat daddy sweet....
The BBQ holster was just beautiful, and it would have looked like dy-no-mite on me..
 but again...
"I" didn't get a chance to have it..
Drats.. Foiled again..

And yes ponyexpress, it DOES take a lot of time and hard work to do something like this.. and not just for one day either.
There is lots of work and follow up work the whole time a giveaway goes on... so thank you very much for acknowledging that .. :-*

Marshallette' you need to get your cast iron skillet out, if you listen to Michael's audio for this week, the first two names out of the hat for the giveaway were his and the Marshal's.  So if they had their name's in the hat, and told you no, well a good Kansas girl knows what to do with the skillet ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Michael - This offer is more than generous, and to my belief, actually un-necessary.  I really saw no problem with neither the initial effort, nor the result (with one minor change).

That said, I will be in for any other promotions you present.

Thanx again for all the great information, especially the breadth and mixture of topics.

Okay Tim...stop!...enough!...you've beaten me down! Suppose I was to talk to our pal Wayne Novak about a little .45 1911 giveaway...what do you think the specs on such a gun should be????. I was thinking of maybe an Officer's sized piece...would you go with Kart, Bar-Sto or someone else on the barrel? Stainless, blue or magic shake-and-bake finish? Sights...well, it'll probably be Novak doing the building, but he's got a lot off selections...

So what would the Tim Burke Special look like?

BTW all, Tim knows of which he speaks!

OK boys and girls i am going to just put my 2cents in here if i may?
If you are going to talk about a "giveaway gun" then officer is not the way Michael should be thinking. IMHO man LONGSLIDE is where it is at and it should have a "Shuman" BBL with a hybred setup along with the adjustabe Novak maybe a fiberoptic mounted on the BBL so it does not move when the slide moves. Now that would be worth your time and might just keep a few men and gals up at night.
THEN AGAIN I JUST MIGHT BE IN THE MINORITY HERE!!!
But I don't think so.
Lets see.

So what would the Tim Burke Special look like?
I tend to favor larger 1911s, although I do have one Officers sized gun, coincidentally from Novak's shop, built by the late Joe Bonar.
What would I have Wayne build, now? 4.25" or 5" 1911. Double diamond slim black micarta grips. Shorten the butt and weld on a mag well so that the standard dimensions are maintained. Machine the profile of the mag well to match the slim grips. Gold bead front sight, Ghost rear. Kart barrel. Novak's "The Answer" in lieu of a beavertail grip safety. GI guide rod.
Front strap checkered at 25x25. Flat MSH checkered at 25 lpi. Ed Brown Tactical extended safety. Replace the ignition system with someone's kit... there are a number of good ones out there now. 4# trigger. Fit 2 Ed Brown Hardcore extractors. Carry bevel, matte the top of the slide, finish in NP3.
Not a lot of flash, but a very functional carry gun, with a distinct Novak flavor.

Novak 1 of 100 New model 70 series  Colt
Novak One-piece back strap "ANSWER®" 25x25 Checkering
Novak Hammer Kit
GI Extractor
GI Slide stop
Videki Trigger
Checker Front Strap - Stainless, High Cut
(All Checkering by Pete Single)
Kart NM Barrel - hard fit and hand lapped

Ed Brown Mag Catch

Wayne's on board with a custom for the Giveaway, and this is what we're talking about. BTW, I just sent my GUNSITE S&W to him for The Answer, along with a little Kimber to see if Wayne can fix it so I like it better.

Thanks for playing along!

Will you be attending the Cooper Memorial at Whittington in a couple of weeks?

Is this Jim for Baton Rouge even a member here? I haven't seen him post showing the spoils of his ill gotten gain.

I cry foul and feel like this contest was an elaborate hoax to up the membership here. I wouldn't doubt it if Jim is one of your friends.

This contest was clearly misrepresented. I'd even go as far to say that you were accepting entries at the convention and could have cared less about whether or not the entrants actually visited this site.

The people that came here and registered for this giveaway should have the only one's considered for the drawing.

You whored yourself out to the masses when you allowed every Tom, Dick, and Harry to register from elsewhere. I watched the video like the other 600 or so entrants. 8000, how the hell can you say this contest was for "Downrange Television" members?

This is a sham and a complete misrepresentation of what a Giveaway is about. This was meant to bring attention to the site, well you got it. Now everyone knows what a complete hoax this really is.

I hope you have the intestinal fortitude to leave this up. You bet your hairy asses this is a case of sour grapes, I knowingly entered a contest that I had zero chance of winning. But I entered thinking I was on a level playing field. I was among my fellow gun nuts, helping a new site get off the ground. I expected honesty and integrity. I got neither. Good luck Jim! If you even exist. I think if he does exist he's a friend or family and is in on the con.

You can lock my account as I'll never come back.
