I had wanted to play with one of those magnetic holders that you can use to hold a gun behind a night stand or under a desk. But being cheap I didn't want to shell out the bucks for something I might not like.
AH-HA! I have a collection of old disk drives from older computers and was tearing them apart to "shred" the information before putting them in the garbage. (Ok, call me paranoid.) Before I dispose of a disk drive I disassemble it. Pass a magnet over all the surfaces and then heavily scratch all the disks. Inside most disk drive is a rather strong rare earth magnet. JUST PERFECT for holding a gun.
Here's a picture of the magnet and of it installed. OF COURSE, caution is advised when children and irresponsible adults may be on the premises. I can put a thin layer of plastic or fabric over the magnet to protect the gun finish. I'm not sure I like it yet. This seems better than in a drawer. I may take a second one and put behind the night stand. I'm not sure I like it, but it's a cheap way to find out.

Cool Idea, Alf!
And they talk about YANKEE engineering! ;)

Nice tip alf. You never know if an idea will work unless you try it and by putting it out there, someone else may refine it or think of something else! Nice post.

Oh I forgot to mention. The magnet already has a mounting bracket. All's required is two screws

Thanks Alf.

Wow, for a second there I thought that was a Glock being held by your magnet. The United Methodist Church of which I am a member still thinks Glocks are all plastic and can't be picked up on metal detectors. Haven't tried to set them straight...they wouldn't listen!
Richard
PS: Forgot to add, good idea!!!!!

Great idea.
I like the idea of putting it on the back of the night stand.....out of sight but ready to go.
I used to use a cheap Uncle Mike's kydex holster in the same fashion. I took the belt attachment off and screwed the holster to the back of the night stand.
If your bed has a dust-ruffle around the bottom, you can also attach it to the metal frame and then the ruffle will cover the gun.

they have metal detectors at your church?

That's what lept to my mind as well. Where is it located? Beirut?
@Alf. Thanks. I just replaced a hard drive and was just gonna destroy the data. Now I have a project.

For those who don't know I work at a UMC, and all the pastors are hunters......yes that includes the female one, as well as our chief finance lady. Just lucky I guess.
BTB: That's a Springfield Armory XD9 in the picture.

That is a great idea.
I have plenty of the magnets as I always take them apart before disposal and shatter the disks and keep the magnets.

Doesn't one of Murphy's laws say "If It's Stupid but it WORKS it ain't stupid." I think it's a cool Idea! And I may have one of those magnets somewhere lying around...... May have to try that.....

If you ever blow up a speaker the magnets in them work too. I even have some woofer magnets that will hold up a shotgun, but I like Alf's idea better.

No, my church doesn't have MD at each entrance! Back when Glocks first came out members attending Annual Conference at Lakeside Ohio (near Camp Perry) voted to approve a measure condemning "Plastic Pistols" Glocks in particular because the MSM hyped them as able to pass thru MD undetected. This has never been removed from the books and I am sure some of us "Old Timers" who don't know any better still fear TT (Tactical Tupperware).
FWIW
Richard
PS: Not putting down all UMCes just the Conference in my area. My original post was poking fun at them!!!!!!!

I just made a Tactical Day Planner for my Springer SS Champ by laying down Velcro in the back and I ordered a ACORN Velcro holster [12.00] that sticks to carpet, etc for gun safes. Just put some Velcro on the back of the night stand and your gun will go there and in the day planner. That's what I do.

Alf, does that magnet work as well with a revolver as it does an auto?

As long as you have enough flat between the sights for the magnet.
