Hopefully they will offer it in 7.62 X 39 or .223 According to the local range where they used to rent an original they can't get 8 MM kurz any more and it was darned expensive when they could $1 a round 2 years ago IIRC.

What he said!

8mm kurz, huh? Who'd a thunk it when we were hoarding stockpiling ammo that we would need 8mm kurz!  ::)

But wtf - due out in a couple weeks and still no MSRP? Also, can you imagine what the mags are going to cost? ? ?   ;D

Isnt 8mm Kurz just the same thing as 8mm Mauser?

Not positive, but I don't think so. "Kurz" is German for short, the 8mm round is a long round IIRC.

Not to mention that the whole idea of the MP 44 was to create an "in between" round. The MP44 was not a sub machine gun and not a rifle. Thus the assault rifle was born................Sturmgewehr

Pathfinder is correct. The StG 44 was designed for an "intermediate " cartridge, more powerful than the 9MM pistol cartridge of their submachine guns, but more controllable than the full size  7.92/8MM Rifle round.
Their answer was the 8mm Kurz  (short) cartridge.

About 3 minutes of typing but I had to search for a link, that took the most time.

I love the MP44!  Did have two MP44 battlefield pickups in Iraq in 03' and managed to find 60 rds of East German 7.92x33mm over there.  Mags are hard to come by as only had one for the two guns (knew of 4 others there at the time).  Been searching for MP44 mags since and haven't run across anymore.  Hornady does make a 123 gr JSP loaded round for it.  Good intermediate cartridge design.  The gun does heat up under the metal handguard as the barrel is right on top of your hand.  More development would probabily corrected this shortcoming.

I did miss the opertunity to photograph the MP44 along side a HK MP5 or G3.  You can clearly see the linage of design.  Stoner copied the dust cover from the MP44 onto the AR10/15 series (yes, its the same just upside down)

It also helped inspire the AK. While they may not share any mechanical relationship MK had experience on the wrong end of them to make him think "why can't we".

CD, I can't tell you how much I hate you right now. . You had 2 MP44s that you just picked up off the battlefield? Damn.

As for the magazine, maybe they do that thing they showed in Enemy at the Gates in reverse - here's a gun, when they guy with the one magazine gets whacked, you pick it up, put it in your gun and use it until you get whacked, then the next guy . . .

Plus, where do you and your buddies get those cool looking rectangular black sunglasses? ? ? ?

PS: Just kidding about the whole hate thing. I respect the hell out of your work over there, and I think a more appropriate word is "jealous as all get out".

So, like, what happened to those 2 MP44s?

7.92X33  Not a bad price if you ask me.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/browse/browseammo.aspx?c=96&s=889

Sure wouldn't mistake it for anything else by looks...  :-\

The Hornady stuff's likely to be reloadable.   :-\  That'd be an experience!

I was not aware it was commercially available. Around here that would be a real good price on .308 or 30/30.
What else uses that cartridge, there can't be THAT many old MP 44's around ?

Not sure anything else takes it...

But.  "Demand for the ammunition still exists, as the StG 44 is still in use by some within the Lebanese Forces militia, as well as irregular forces in some countries in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. 7.92 Kurz ammunition is currently manufactured by the Prvi Partizan factory in Užice, Serbia."

Approx. 250.000 MP44 were made.  The STG 45 Volks Strumghewer was also made in 7.92mm Kruz.  No other country built guns for it that I'm aware of.  It was used after WWII by Yugoslavia, Syria and some south African countries until enough SKS and AK-47s became availible.

ETA:  We did have an older MP43/I model in my units arms room from 1986-92'.  Don't remember a magazine and I even hunted down 10 rds of ammo for it to shoot.  Got the gun back out of the foreign weapons locker and then noticed that it was demilled (barrel plugged and bolt face welded).  Would be interesting to have a barrel chambered for it in my Contender.

You could probably get a barrel custom made.
