Just wanted to post that a fellow marine electrician, that works for another company than mine, had a young employee get electrocuted with 380Volt Three Phase onboard the Olympia, a 158 ft Feadship, at the Rybovich yard here in Florida. I worked a half day yesterday on the boat next to Olympia on the Quantum Of Solace. Seen him a few times, and talked to him several times last week. Good Kid, twenty something.
His name is Jeff. I don't know his last name.
His right hand had a hole literally blown through it, and was bleeding badly. He was alert and walking but with voltage that high, it makes an entry and exit wound like a bullet, and can cause internal damage. He was taken to the hospital by a co-worker, and I do not know the status as of tonight. My partner called and gave me the news.
Don't know what went wrong, or how, but 380 is no joke, I'm on a 480VAC system right now, but it is offline and bypassed.
Whether he works for another company or not doesn't matter, and I am praying for his recovery. His right hand sounds badly damaged.

On the list TW. And your a good man for asking.

Yup, on the list. I can't imagine walking around after getting zapped with 380 3-phase, tough kid. Let Jeff know we are praying for him, for his full recovery.
-
I've seen a lot of electrical injuries, and they are like any other burn - they continue getting worse before they stabilize and eventually, hopefully, get better.
He is most certainly on the ever growing list!

Done!
Only takes an instant to change a persons life, God Bless this young man and hopes for a speedy recovery and therapy.

Your a good man TW. Consider it done.

I know what electrical (480v) burns feel like......more intense than regular fire.
I will definitely pray for him.

Prayers going out, TW. Keep us posted.

TW, done deal...thanks for the word.

Got the skinny this morning. Jeff was inside the control room, inside the main panel, working next to a live 380VAC Buss, on a secondary control system circuit.
Due to the "inconvenience" of going "dead ship" and cutting all external power, it makes Capt.'s and Crews grumpy as most of the larger yacht systems are all high voltage, very little 24VDC.
He was "pushing the envelope", the screwdriver in his right hand "nicked the 380 Buss" and exploded inside the panel. The web between his thumb joint and index finger was blown into a large nasty hole. He did not lose any fingers, but also has palm burns across all 4 fingers. A small piece of the plastic handle of the screwdriver melted in an instant into the wound. He had surgery today, and his fingernails are all black. If it doesn't get infected, he'll recover with all 5 fingers.
He suffered no other damage, his guitar picking days are over, but with Physical therapy, and a good surgeon, he keeps all his fingers.. So prayers were certainly answered on that end.
Thank you for the thoughts and prayers, I told his supervisor that myself, co-workers, and strangers on the DRTV forum are hoping he has a speedy recovery. He's a good guy and wanted to also express his gratitude and heartfelt thanks.
The Super, said he should have scheduled a time to shut the power off, (as my company does), and just thought about safety.
He said he would get word back to Jeff.
Thanks again DRTV. Prayer works...
