Title: Gas piston system for AR-10
Post by: r_boyette on October 05, 2009, 06:09:25 PM
I am new to the Black rifle platform. My experience with rifle comes mostly from hunting and I just purchased my first AR-15 in June. I have always drooled over them and the .308/7.62 AR has long been of interest to me. However I hear that they are somewhat finicky. I do not know the specific problems of the rifle tho. My question is, are any companies manufacturing one with the piston design gas system and has it solved any of the problems?

If your heart is set on an M-1A, go for it! The best gun around. Easy to maintain.   Bill T.

CMMG  will be introducing a Gas Piston AR 10 (.308/7.62X51 ) upper later this year to go with the lower  that takes inexpensive G 3 Magazines

Friend bought one of their P-308 rifles, haven't heard from him yet on it though.  Like Bill said, if you want a .308, at least look at a M1A.  You could get a M1A for a thousand bucks less with a ton of mags.

Some one who already HAS an AR 15 will probably prefer an AR style .308 since it's the same gun only a little larger. Plus the AR has drop free mags for simpler reloads.

The AR-10 refers to the Armalite specifically.  The Armalite is not compatible with the DPMS, or KAC systems.  Those are based on the SR-25, and use those magazines.  The Armalite AR-10 uses M1A pattern magazines that have been modified to work in an AR.  The CMMG is meant for the DPMS .308 platform, not an Armalite.

There have been several issues that Armalite has dealt with over the years for the AR-10.  First was the extraction issue where the extractor would let go of the case and then try to feed a new one.  Fixed.  The other one was people making their own modifications to M1A magazines and them not working.  Blame the rifle for that one.. :(    Yes I have an older (1999) model AR-10 and it runs fine.  I have used it for all sorts of shooting, including Appleseeds and taking it hunting and bagging deer and antelope.

Don't forget about the FAL...

not my 1st choice, but they are a short stroke gas piston that has a adjustable gas system.

To my knowledge the only maker of an AR pattern .308 that has a piston is Patriot Ordnance Factory (www.pof-usa.com).  Also if you go to the Armalite website they have a place there with all the technical bulletins that they have put out.
