Now that I think about it, I did hear of some skit but can't remember what it was about.  Supposed to be raunchy or something.

It was a skit about the Jackson Five with Mike in whiteface and the rest in blackface and Harry Connick, Jr. not wanting to participate because it insulted black people.

It's considered rather inappropriate in the U.S., the TV show appologized to Connick when he walked off the show.  Ironically, he's also done something similar a few years ago but it was a black variety show so I guess he gets a pass for that one...

Basically, who gives a shit!  More entertainment mamby, pamby BS.

That is not the one I heard about, but it doesn't sound bad.  Everyone has forgotten the definition of 'humor'.

The skit was performed on an Australian TV show by a group of 5 physicians.  They have been doing the skit foir a number of years (like 20) but this time Harry Connick Jr. was one of the judges and he got his panties in a knot.

I saw the skit.  I didn't think it was funny, but I didn't think it deserved any outrage, either.

what I think is ironic is that they were Med Students from India  studding in Australia  when they first did it years ago   and now are Dr's  here.

CNN had a huge story about this at 3 P.M. est.

They showed the skit about three times and had an Austrailian PR lady in an interview to give Australia's side of the story.

The topic was "Is Austrailia now like America was in the 50's when it comes to race?"  or something like that.

CNN had their people check out various polls and stated from the polls they checked that 70 to 75 percent of Austrailians that saw the skit didn't think it was offensive.  Including Channel 9 which is the channel that has the show.

The lady basicly threw Channel 9 under the bus saying that of course they (Channel 9) would have those figures.  They put on the show to get people to watch that channel and that show is a huge hit there so the channel would defend its show.

I also agree with Harry about how that show would never make it here in the U.S..  I also feel he did good in voicing his own thoughts.  There's always a lot of posts here decrying the lack of morals and the backbone to stand up for what you believe in a lot of today's Americans.  Well here's one that did.  You don't have to agree with him, but you gotta admit he has the courage to stand up for his convictions.

Ulmus,

I agree entirely with your statement but, do you also agree that there is a double standard in the US regarding these kinds of comedy shows?  It's absolutely amazing what the black community will tolerate from their own which I think widens the gap rather than shortening it.

Just a thought!

It made some of the news, very briefly - FoxNews I think had an article on it. I'd go look for a link but really, DILLIGAF?

Phil, missed you dude, welcome back. I have to go look at you loo now, eh?

I think I just did kalifornia, English and Canadian slang all in one sentence - for an Aussie! Forgive me . . .

Thanks for your post, Timothy.  It maked drop my second part and jump ahead.

Is there a double standard?  No.  It's worse.  There is racism in the black community itself.  Just watch "School Daze" by Spike Lee and you'll see how bad they treat each other.  (I can't stand the guy, but if does make a point even though the situation is "ramped up" for a more dramatic movie.)

What's never said though is the changes going on now.  I remember two elderly ladies coming to my door talking about the end times (Jahovah's Witnesses) and I smiled at the obvious mistakes they didn't see.

I said, "The worlds better now than it is, you two are an example."
"How is that?"  One asked.
"Look at you two."  I replied. "You're both ladies in your 80s working together and you're different races."  (one was black the other white.)  "You two grew up in a time of segregation, fear,  and hatred and now you're working together.  I'd say the world is getting better."

Not knowing what to say, they left.

Sorry.  Gotta post again.  If I fill the box up it jumps around and i can't read what I'm typing.

Anyway, that's why scenes like the Blackface skit are so sensitive.  They are a reminder of the bad times for us and a phsychological "slap in the face" for others.

See while it might be over 50 years for this, its only been 2 or 3 generations ago.  That means a father or grandfather lived through those times when blackface was a slam.  It was used to show people in an exaggerated state.  And a father would tell his son about that time to warn or protect them.  I've experienced it myself when a man came to my school in 1988 and told everyone about how Hollywood made these "Blackxploitation" movies in ther Seventies and protrayed all black people as drug using pimps or prostitutes.  (Yes that happened in my school.)

So that's why the blackface makes a lot of people uneasy.  It throws this back into our face and shows how little time has truly passed.

The box jumping is a bit of a pain, happens to me as well.  Marshal?  What up?.... ;D

As to the rest, all great points and I agree with your Spike Lee assesment, he's an utter and total bigot IMO.

Amost done.  :)

We are in a time of fluctuation when it comes to race relations.  It's great!

Let's put a spin on this.  Does anyone here remember the time Eddie Murphy did his first skit as a "white man"?  It was different than the old "black face" style.  He didn't just throw flour on his face and rant and rave about how superior the white man is to all the others.  No.  He did an over the top skit where everything was great for a white person and all the breaks went his way.  My family was rolling at the skit.  Why?  because it was so voer the top it was a fairy tail.  There was no animosity or insults towards the white community involved.  Just a joke at flase perceptions done in a harmless way.

The Michael Jackson thing didn't have that.  It seemed harsh and fake.  It reminded my of the time a guy pretended to be black for Holloween.  Except he didn't do it as a light-hearted joke.  He said he did it to piss off the...
  (this was two years ago.)

And that's why we still walk this tightrope.  How do you know what is just a harmless joke and what is masked hatred?  We move forward, yet the past still haunts us.  We have to look at our achievments and our failures and know while we have gotten far, we're still heading for the goal.

We're gonna get there.

We have severe racial issues in this country and Connicks liberal white guilt pandering is a classic example of bowing to the new racism.
What kind of shit storm would be stirred by the founding of, White Entertainment TV, a White Congressional Caucus, or the National Association for the Advancement of White People. How about an Affirmative Action program that said Asians are taking to high a percentage of our Engineering degrees, Schools have to change their standards to more accurately reflect the percentage of Whites in society.
I'm sick of all this BS about racism, I remember the real thing, and todays Blacks are nothing but cry babies.
The only minorities in America who don't get ahead are the ones who don't TRY to get ahead. It is not entirely their fault either, 60 years of the slavery defending democraps telling them that they are "owed" has left the black community to lazy to think.
Consider these facts : The politicians who fought hardest against Abolition were Dems.
The States that seceded were led by Dem majorities
Lincoln, who fought a War to END slavery was a Republican
Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who founded the KKK was a Dem. Republican were not welcome
All the Southern Segregationists who fought against equality were Dems.
Another thought for you.
The Dems say that the Republicans are the party of the "Rich", and they need to keep the rich wealthy in order to maintain and increase their power, while the Dems, they will smugly tell you are the party of the "Poor" and the under dogs."
The logical extension of that idea, which the dems leave out, is that they in turn have a vested interest in making sure THEIR power base, the poor and the underdogs, also remain that way to maintain THEIR power base.
These a$$holes are still on the Plantation, they are just vote cattle for the Dems who feed on their largely self inflicted misery.

You're missing the point.

It's not liberal white guilt pandering.  It's saying no.  we're not going to go back there.  We're moving forward.

And instead of decrying about no WEN or NAAWP, how about working so that there is no need for an NAACP or BET or the like.  That instead of the Black, White, Yellow, Red man, we just see a man.

Never been on one.  ;D  Born and Raised in Highland Park (Detroit), Michigan.  :)

It looks like you feel that I'm coming from a Left-wing Liberal viewpoint.  That I consider racsism to be something different than the norm.

No.

I consider racism to be what was listed on your second link at the 25 second mark. "Racism: Discrimination or Prejudice based on Race"

I also feel that way about sexism and sexual orientation as well.

Or to put in in easier terms.

I believe that ALL are created equal.  Just like it says in the Declaration of Independence.  (I just took off the "Men" part so that people wouldn't sidetrack asking If I thought that woman should be equal as well.)

I've also seen many times at work and in my life people being discriminated against because of their race.  Heck, I've been discriminated against too.

That leads to a choice.  You can hate the other group because you think they are being treated better than you or you can fight against discrimination itself.

Which one seems morally correct to you?

About three years ago I remember walking through a customers plant in Canada with the branch's President.  As we're walking along he turns over and says real loud.  "Look at all these lazy sand niggers.  Can't get any work out of them!"   :o  Immediately they respond with. "Stupid WOP!  What do you know?!?".  This kind of thing went on for about a full minute, then they all started laughing and said.  "You sensitive American's really get blown away hearing anyone talk about that stuff dont you?"  I had just stood there mind reeling with "OH CRAP!" thoughts, trying to keep a neutral expression, and not let my being German get brought into it!

My point.  People in the U.S. are so worried about being politically correct we've become a global joke even in CANADA!!!

OH, I used the "N" word!  Surely the world will end!  Fact is I hear black Americans use it more than anybody else.  The "N word".   ::)  Get over it America!

That's what we're trying to do.  To get over the animosity and the over correctness.  To be at ease with eachother like those people you met in Canada.  That's where the transition comes in.

As Middle aged man would say, "I'm working on it!"  ;D

It REALLY felt good to see those people so relaxed with the subject!  It's a beutiful change from the seperatism impressed by the American press we see EVERY day!  They imply one race "owes" the other with nearly every story.  ::)

Ulmas, You obviously don't get it, but you are part of the problem.
Any one who whines about racism when we have a BLACK President, (Regardless of whether he's a POS or not ) needs to rethink his position and find something else to b!tch about, cuz THAT dog just don't hunt.

Tom,

When people are still out there saying things like "I'd rather have a woman as president than a ... anyday!" or "I have nothing wrong with black people, I think everyone should own one." and other remarks like that shows that there still is racism we need to stop it.

The hunt still exists.

I WOULD rather have a woman hack like Hilly than that socialist POS we got stuck with.
As for your other example, you don't hear me sniveling about "drunk Irish" jokes or MB pissing and moaning about "cheap Scots" Jokes, or M'ette whining about "blond" jokes, what makes blacks any different ?
There's to many of them to qualify as an endangered species so HTFU or die. But quit trying to push the blame for  laziness, and entitlement mentality onto US. It's bullsh!t.
Title: Re: Hey Hey It's Saturday

I never said anything about any political belief being better than the other.
Liberal, Conservative, Republican, Democrate, Libertarian  It doesn't matter to me.

Nor did I say people were pushing blame on others or push any entitlement program as well.

What I said is that we need to judge people as people and not by their skin color or other junk.

Do you think that laziness can be measured by the color of a person's skin?
Do you think that every single person of a race feels they are entitled to everything?
Do you think that only people of certain skin colors can belong to only one political group?

As for "Drunk Irish", "Cheap Scotts"  and other anglo saxon remarks, my wife told me of the big scandal in her family about her aunt who is Irish who married an Italian.  That was in the 50's as well.

It was during the 50's and 60's that you saw the aglo-whites made peace with eachother because of the fear of all the black people moving in.  :o ::)

And as for me, I have Austrian, German, Polish, Irish, Greek, and French, in me so I'm just a basic mutt!
