Title: FATAL COYOTE ATTACK
Post by: fightingquaker13 on October 29, 2009, 03:45:23 PM
A very tragic story. Also one more reason to carry a gun in the woods. Those who say we have nothing to fear, that lions, bears, wolves and now even coyotes are harmless might take note. (I'm not holding my breath). I am all in favor of predators, but respect for them means understanding what they are cabable of. I am thinkng that maybe that SP 101 or Alaskan might not be a better investment than the AK. The following is from todays LA Times.

Musician Taylor Mitchell dies after coyote attack while hiking
October 29, 2009 | 10:38 am
A young folk musician had her life cut tragically short, dying from injuries sustained after being attacked by two coyotes while hiking.

Taylor Mitchell, 19, was hiking alone in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada, on Tuesday when the attack occurred.

Mitchell, of Toronto, was airlifted to a Halifax hospital in critical condition and died Wednesday morning.

The Ottawa Citizen reports that another hiker heard her screams and called emergency services. Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers arrived at the scene and shot one of the coyotes, though both animals escaped.

Park officials later killed one of the coyotes believed to have bitten Mitchell. Its body was sent to the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island for pathological tests to try to determine why the animals attacked.

"If Mitchell ran from the coyotes or panicked, it may have triggered a predatory response in the animals," said Simon Gadbois, an animal behavior specialist at Canada's Dalhousie University.

"Coyotes are very shy animals," Gadbois said. "To me, this looks like two yearlings with very little hunting experience, probably very hungry, maybe a little bit desperate."

Fans continue to express condolences on Mitchell's MySpace and Facebook pages.

"Words can't begin to express the sadness and tragedy of losing such a sweet, compassionate, vibrant and phenomenally talented young woman," Lisa Weitz, Mitchell's manager, said in an e-mail. "She loved the woods and had a deep affinity for their beauty and serenity."

Your Glock should be enough for what your likely to run into down there, I would not bother with anything bigger than .357.
Think about this, MB carries a .44 and they have Grizzlies and lions in his neighborhood.

trouble with wild animals is they either don't read the books about how wild animals behave or they do something different once in a while just to be difficult about the whole thing

Don't talk FQ out of buying a gun.  Eventually, they become previously owned guns that we can pick up on the cheap from the Classified section.

:)  FQ  If you buy a SP101, please buy the longer barrel version.  I already have a snubbie... :D

Yeah, yeah ;D Seriously, the only handgun I am actually in the market for, and have been for a couple of years, is a good used GP 100, but they are scarce on the ground. The coyote attack is just an excuse to fondle the Alaskan. I love them, but just can't justify one. I will live vicariously through Gringo.

Here's one of her songs - not bad, some talent, would have been nice to see where she went.

I used to follow Canadian music quite a bit, especially from the Maritimes. The Rankin Family is still one of my all time favorites.

During the later years of the Indian wars their was a Lakota named Eesatay, It translates as "Wolf shit".
Don't know what made me think of that.
FQ, you can't go wrong with the GP 100. But I know what you mean about them being scarce. I spent 4 months, money in hand, looking for one, settled for a S&W model 13 which is also a good pistol. Though not as tank like as the Ruger it was about $150 less used.

About 2 years ago was in a Gun Store in Tacoma and saw a stainless 6" GP100. Had a Security 6 decades ago and its timing was never just right and far from a S&W trigger pull.
Anyways, was handed the gun and that was that - bought it right there.
Had the best trigger I ever tried on a stock revolver action - butter.

Take down on GP100

Yep, same here. It is something I want, but its going to have to be the right configuration at the right price. I can find them on-line, but add the $50 transfer fee and $35 shipping....it really negates the savings, as no one wants to sell them cheap once they own one. Unlike AKs and ARs and The Judge and others, its not a piece where folks impulse or panic buy and suffer buyers remorse.Once you have a Ruger wheel gun, you don't want to sell it. I will find that SS Gp-100 though, then coyotes beware. ;D In the mean time I will happily make due with my Glocks.

Ask and ye shall receive! Damn TW, I hadn't looked at GA for awhile as I was sort of shopping locally for this. Anybody have any thoughts as to the "3 vs 4" for a woods/house gun? There is a lot of info out there saying that 4' is as good as 6" accuracy wise despite the shorter sight plane. Is this true with 3" vs 4"? I'm not looking for ccw here, but its a nice option if the sacrifice is minimal.

4 inch.  With practice you can hit a man size target at 100 yards and it's still short enough for IWB ccw.

That's my basic instinct as well. I was hoping to find one used with some cosmetic dings for $350-$400, but NIB for less than five is very tempting.

My dearly departed Ruger Police Service Six, with a 4 inch bull barrel ,was the shinizzle when it comes to an all purpose kick ass revolver.

The GP100 is as good as it gets.

Size does matter, and the 4 inch gives you that "extra" reach should you need it.

Damn coyote's won't stand a chance. While hiking, camping, at home, with a couple of speedloaders, it just works as an all around great pistol. "Top 10" best revolvers IMHO. Maybe Top 5

Another advantage of the GP 100 is it is the only revolver I know of that has the front sight dovetailed so you can replace it with a fiber optic for better visibility with out machining.

Damn. A pretty girl, a nice voice and an ugly, needless death. Please watch that video and tell me that its wrong, dangerous or paranoid to carry while in the wilderness.
FQ13 who knows that the ones who bought her albums are probably the the first to condemn owning, let alone carrying a gun. Maybe this will be a wakeup call, but I doubt it. :'(
