There are some that suspect some of the vessels are targeted for weapons shipments whether to legitimate forces or rival gangs.  A supply ship full of ammunition to units in Iraq/Afgahnistan could ttp the balance of power (what stability there is in Somalia) in the region. There is a lot of illegal arms trade too.  Smaller boats from Iran, or other less than friendly countries, head to just about every port in the area.  Not all of them have pretty rugs.

I don't think this is much of a possibility. A Navy munitions ship would have a security escort (and Marines) for protection!

Illegal arms are one of the 3 prime money makers of international crime, the other 2 being drugs and people. The biggest arms sources are N Korea, China and former Soviet republics.

the US Navy provides security for their 'high risk cargoes' such as fuel and arms going to the war effort in the Middle East. but if you ask congress... they do not think the ships crews are to be trusted with arms because it is a dangerous environment. I work on a tanker and we put .50 cal machine guns on deck when we go to these places. we have safeguards to keep vapors off the deck and minimize fire hazards, explosive atmospheres at all times, including load and discharge. to the retards that think my life isn't worth the extra cost and training I say that there is nobody in the world (especially not some politician) that knows the condition of a vessel and if it is safe to fire an arm than the crew that works and lives aboard her.
damn pirates
damn politicians!
AAAHHHHHH!!!
rant off.
