I am really needing to replace the sling on my AR15. I do want a single point sling...I think. I would love the new ASAP system from Magpul but it is impossible to find. I am seriously considering ordering the single point adapter from Magpul
http://www.magpul.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=82_132&products_id=302
but I don't want to go our and just buy a sling of the shelf. Any input would be great especially if links are included. I am the kind of person that would just take the word of others if it saved me the trouble of devoting hard thought. So please indulge me.

i bought a voodoo tactical sling from the sportsman's guide catalog and its great, you need a sling adapter though, which i also picked up off Sportsman's guide.
the sling is elastic, so it is real comfortable to walk around with, but not for prolonged amount of time because it ends up becoming a yo-yo and getting in the way.
if just for SD and at the range, this is a great, cheap, way to go.

Just out of shear contrariness, and a desire to learn, as I need to buy a sling for my AR, what constitutes a "tactical" sling? Seems to me that even if you do go hiking in the Hindu Kush that rifle will spend more time over your shoulder than in your hands. Likewise, a more traditional sling is an aid in aiming. Also in a combat situation it will work front deployed. My Mforgery has a horizontal rear mount. If I get a matching one up front I should be able to throw it over my shoulder or carry it foward muzzle down. Either way, unlike a single point I can use it in shooting as a "rest". I look forward to responses.

FQ,
As you might know I make slings...just not "tactical" ones....(though they can be found in some of the more interesting places on earth doing some VERY good work).
Since people call/email/chat with me daily about this, I have an opinion. My two cents.
Some folks NEED a carry strap that they can shoot with, a normal 2 point sling. USGI or such suffices.
Many folks WANT the coolest most popular thing that is on the cover of a magazine..... they USUALLY work fine.
A scant few folks get the weirdest crap ever for sling "systems". 3200 feet of nylon, 65 fatsex buckles, 40 feet of velcro and an instruction manual/CD.
Story: I met a gent at a training facility that will go nameless. High Speed Low Drag place.... aforementioned gent had some weird sling arrangement on his rifle and showed me how cool it was. It took him minutes to get into it and adjusted, then he went through the VERY VERY VERY lengthy procedure of adjustments that took it from a "CQB" sling to a "Sniper" sling with every variant of shooting in between. Truly the ultimate Mall Ninja accessory.
Before spending your hard earned cash on the coolest chunk o' nylon, PLEASE go try one out, think about your "mission" and how you carry, where you carry, methods of deployment etc etc. Be realistic with your self and calm that Walter Mitty Gene...then choose your gear!
Andy (who runs a 2 pointer on his Colt...mine is leather, but I like the GI issue ALOT)

Simple is good.
Current US Military issue

or
Current Israeli Military issue

If too simple, then in addition to your Magpul option, look at Gear Sector, Vickers VCAS, Viking or a great value with a Boonie Packer sling.

The Israeli civilian version works well in shopping malls also! Bill T.

I've got a couple from Blackhawk. The single point I have is the Storm sling. It works great. The other one is a three point sling. Works great if I want sling it over my should or if I want to carry it "tactically." I used the three point on my Winchester for deer season. And carried it both ways for five days.

I don't have a picture of it mounted on the gun, but this VTAC is a nice padded sling that works well with any type of AR. Bill T.

I like a good 3 point sling. The standard 2 point sling tends to let the rifle hang upside down, with a 30rd mag it will add to you reaction time flipping it back right side up and into action. Especially if you have to wear a bunch of other crap with it (radios, body armor, ect.). A GOOD 3 pt sling won't need to be adj. constantly. It will take some time to set up initially but once you get it right it should stay right. I tried single pt slings but for extended carry it swung around to much. I reckon for DOOR KICKERS AND CQB they would work good, but I'm not one of them types. When deployed I work on an airfield getting on and off aircraft with my rifle slung. So a 3pt works best for me! ;D
P.S. That's also what most of the Military is using today. The 2 pt is yesterdays tool!

The only thing that'd worry me about a 3 point on an AR is the 3 points I've seen have a strap going from front to back on the rifle... AR's are COVERED with little spring loaded buttons and levers that the strap could get in the way of. ???
No experience with a 3 point AR setup, so only guessing... :-\

Unless your mounting the sling on the right side (for a lefty) that shouldn't be an Issue. The take down pins push out to the right side. Their are only two items on the left side that could be of issue, the selector/safety switch (witch is snug to the lower), and the bolt release paddle (no issues either), so far I haven't had any issues with the sling hanging on anything. Of course I'm not a front line door kicker so I can't speak with that kinda experience. But I like the 3pt so much I put one on my hunting rifle. ;D

I've moved from 3 points to a 2 point, Viking Tactics sling.
I don't know how I ever went this long without the quick adjustable feature on a sling.

I finally pulled the trigger in no part thanks to the input I received from you guys... And judging by the lack of availability I would imagine that I found this with just the right amount of luck. I ordered the Magpul ASAP single point mount and MS2 sling from western sports for a grand total of $85. I don't completely trust ordering online from people I don't know well so I ordered COD. In preparation for this I am still selling an Epiphone Les Paul for coincidentally $85. So if anyone wants an absolutely wonderful playing/sounding Les Paul for cheap let me know. Pictures are on the craigslist site below... I don't have a band anymore and I rarely used it when I did. But I know a lot of you have family that plays and not a bad beginner guitar or backup for cheap. Looks like new and plays just as good.

Hope it works for you! ;D Let us know how you like it after you get it setup!

It's not this one is it? They have different colors available, but $47 seems to be common.

Just a note... when I ordered my sling and end plate adapter I ordered them through a company online called Western Sports. I have never heard of the company but they have had incredible customer support. I decided after placing the order to change the color of the sling from black to the dark earth. Don't ask me why I don't really know. They not only switched it but did so on a Saturday evening with no grief about it. Find that kind of help at some of the larger dealers. MidwayUSA, Brownells are of course excellent. I am mainly referring to the CABELAS types that really don't do to well dealing with people... Just my opinion though.
