Like in the pistol question this question should be self explanatory. I like semi auto rifles, but my shot gun is a pump, that way I don't have to worry whether I have light or heavy loads, it feeds them all for a rifle, If I had to choose just one I would probably go with bolt action since there are fewer things that can go wrong.
-
Bolt for me as well. Simple works for me too. Probably .308 with stock iron sights. No glass, nothing to need batteries for or break or fog up... Good for just about anything on this continent.
-
I voted bolt too. It's what I started out shooting and what I'm used to, 30.06 open sights.
-
I had to go with the Simi Auto. After nearly a 100 years it's a proven design. 8)

I'm surprised that lever action is not doing better, the only reason I picked bolt over that is price.
There were 3 things that disqualified Semi Auto for me, Price, increased number of parts, and most require magazines that can be lost or damaged. single shot, something like an Encore would be doable, but expensive if you include multiple barrels (.223, 308, 12Ga. and 45 blackpowder) an SKS for Semi auto, bolt actions come in every rifle caliber you can imagine but I would try to stick with 7.62 X51 or 8MM, Lever action I would choose the Savage model 99 in 308 with the rotary magazine they came out with 110 years ago you are not limited in bullet choice like with a tube magazine.
-
Most of my rifles, just like most of my pistols, are semi-auto. I like 'em and they work pretty good.
-
My shotguns are all pump action. My first centerfire rifle was a pre 64 Winchester 94 30-30. It's a classic that I love. My second centerfire rifle was a Remington Model 7 in .308 with iron sights and a scope. I prefer to always have iron sights available. I have had all the actions listed except for a pump centerfire rifle although I have had pump action .22s. Not really sure which action I like the best. They all have their place and I guess a lot depends on personal preference and the job at hand.

Bolt action......cause that's how I roll. ;)
-
Oddly, I voted for a lever action. If I could only have one rifle, it would be a 30-30 lever action. I've never owned one and don't plan on buying one either. But that's because I CAN have more than one, a bolt .270 for hunting and an AR for SD. If I had to go with just one though, a 30-30 would be quick enough to be reasonable for SD and good enough or hunting on the east coast. Factor in simplicity, low cost, and easily available ammo and its hard to beat.

I'm surprised by you FQ, I expected it would be the CAS/SASS guy's singing the leverguns praises.

Power of suggestion Tom.
See if you can get him to bark and howl at the moon with another subliminal message.....maybe pull the other lever in the voting booth next time.....or think about the ramification of ones actions.....
;D

Maybe you can subliminally get him to bark or something....maybe pull the other lever in the voting booth next time.....get him to consider the ramifications of ones actions....
FQ, stare at the swinging pendulum......you're feeling very, very sleepy...

After 118 years my 1891 Argentine Mauser, bolt action. It just won't fail. Cycles like it was still new, and can cover short an long distances easily.
TW, who still hates he shot up all his 212 gr,. armor piercing rounds....and can;t find them anymore.... :'(

my blessed AR.
BSA red dot
mags with FMJ and HP.
good for bears, deer, rabbits, cyotes, foxes ;), targets and peoplz

I am a sucker for a good lever action rifle in .308, .30-30, .38-55, .45-70, or .35 Remington.
-
I wish who ever voted Single Shot had commented on their reasoning. I suspect it's somebody with a Contender or Encore.
The interchangeable barrels make them unbeatable for versatility and the good ones produce out standing accuracy.
-
I would have voted single shot, and almost did. But the bolt gun's advantage to me is in it's not needing me to carry shells in an external capacity that could introduce problems like. Shells spilling out on the ground, shells being hard to reach when in an unexpected position, or even loosing or damaging said container. External ammo is just an additional distraction IMO.
Bolt gun got my vote. :)
-
That was part of why I didn't vote Semi Auto.
-
Reasons I'd prefer bolt action in a rifle.
Single shot: Needs cartridges carried externally (easy to drop, exc.)
Lever: Tend to not run well dirty, less accurate, impossible to clean properly, examples I've shot had VERY inconsistant feel to action and trigger, pain to shoot from a rest or laying down, heavier, tube magazine limits ammo choices.
Semi auto: Added weight, complexity leads to less reliability and more rapid wear, rifles reliability depends largely on interchangeable magazines, tend to not run well dirty, less accuracy, no single round loading, light loads lead to jamming, difficult to clean properly, throw and damage brass, encourages poor shooting from most people.
Pump: Super for shotguns! Just feels unnatural in a rifle :-\ heavy, impossible to clean properly (from chamber end), loose forearm is bad news for long range shooting skills, (sorry dad, never have liked your 7600 ;D).
Of course there are exceptions to most any rules, but generaly speaking... I'll take the bolt action.
-
All I have to say is M1 action (M1, M1A, M14). Time tested, rifleman approved!
-
I went with lever. I love the old westerns and they work well. Unlike semiautos muscle power same as pumps. I own a lever and bolt action both great.
-
I love my M1. My gramps taught me to shoot with it and still think of him when go to range.
-
M1 is a mans gun.
-
More than a little stunned semi-auto didn't flat out run away with a popularity poll! :-\
I'm still second guessing between bolt & single shot myself. ;) Always wanted me a heavy barrel, S.S. Ruger #1! :)
-
As much as I like my semi-auto's. (they outnumber everything else in my gun cabinet 2-1) More often than not I find myself reaching for the bolt gun. There is just something about locking a cartridge in the chamber and the rock solid feel of a bolt action. Ok, I'll stop there, as my mouth is watering and my eyes are starting to get misty.
-
I have examples of each in my safe. As a mater of fact, I'm off to the woods with a bolt action tomorrow, but I still voted for the lever action. I love em, and at some point during the current hunting season, I'll be following some critter's tracks through the woods while toten one of my marlins.
-
Like the semi's but grew up with a bolt so I think that I will stick with what I love.
-
I love the AR-15, AK-47, and M-1A, so I'm partial to the semi. But I also love settling in behind a bolt action for some nice close grouping, Magnum action! Bill T.
-
I think I like Lever actions the best. In fact, I don't even HAVE a bolt action. I have 2 pumps, 2 leverguns, and all the rest are semi-auto.
-
Lever guns are a lot of fun. And many of them are very accurate. Bill T.

To much logistic tail, Lot's of parts and springs that need replacing and magazines. Many fewer parts and no mags for bolt action.
All purpose includes TEOTWAWKI.
