California targets TVs to lower electricity demand - Central Florida News 13:
http://www.cfnews13.com/News/Technology/2009/11/18/california_targets_tvs_to_lower_electricity_demand.html
SACRAMENTO, Calif.(AP)
The most power-hungry television sets could soon be banned from store shelves in California as state energy regulators on Wednesday consider a first-in-the nation mandate intended to lower electricity demand.
If adopted, the regulations will require televisions sold in California to be more energy efficient beginning in 2011. The requirement would be tougher in 2013, with only one-quarter of the TVs on the market currently meeting that standard.
Energy commissioners say TVs account for about 10 percent of a home's electricity use. The concern is that the energy draw will rise by as much as 8 percent a year as consumers buy larger televisions, add more to their homes and watch them longer.
Some manufacturers say implementing a power standard will cripple innovation, limit consumer choice and harm California retailers because consumers could simply buy TVs out of state or order them online.
The standards would apply to all TVs up to 58 inches, allowing increasing power use for larger TVs.
For example, all new 42-inch television sets must use less than 183 watts by 2011 and less than 116 watts by 2013. That's considerably more efficient than flat-screen TVs placed on the market in recent years.
A 42-inch Hitachi plasma TV sold in 2007 uses 313 watts while a 42-inch Sharp Liquid-crystal display, or LCD, TV draws 232 watts, according to Energy Commission research. LCDs now account for about 90 percent of the 4 million TVs sold in California annually.
Industry representatives have said the standards would force manufacturers to make televisions that have poorer picture quality and fewer features than those sold elsewhere in the U.S.
California has previously led the nation in setting efficiency requirements for dishwashers, washing machines and other household appliances as a way to address the state's growing electricity demand.
Utilities and environmental groups say the TV standards should head off steep increases in home electricity use and rising electric bills.
An energy-efficient TV would save a household roughly $30 a year per set in lowered electricity costs. If all 35 million TVs watched in the state were replaced with more efficient sets, Californians would save $8.1 billion over 10 years, according to the Energy Commission report.
The standard also could help California meet the goals of its 2006 global warming law, which calls for the state to cut greenhouse gases 25 percent by 2020.
TVs larger than 58 inches would not be covered under the rule, a concession to independent retailers that sell high-end home-theater TVs. Those sets account for no more than 3 percent of the market.
Commissioners are expected to regulate them in the future

That's really gonna dampen the demand for the Chevy Volt in Kali...

Majority in Ca. are a bunch of no ball metrosexuals who won't think for themselves and will get PO'ed if some one expects them to. They need the nanny state and deserve what they get.
What do you want to bet Boxer and Pelosi get reelected.
"That's the way they want it, That's the way the get it."

Thanks Tom, I like you too! ;)

We really need to sell California to Mexico...kinda the modern version of selling the Brooklyn Bridge. IF someone is surprised that they are willing to do this then 'here's your sign.'

It's funny(not) but I have been thinking of all the things that I do on a regular basis like buying ammo and mags online, selling, trading ammo with my friends, next yr I'll be breaking the law for doing these things.
This state does suck.
My first thought today when I received an empty box in the mail that was supposed to have two mags in it was that it had been inspected and impounded.
A couple yrs ago I had a knife delivery that was inspected by agents before I got it. They had ripped the box open and half sealed it back up. It had a sticker on it saying that it had been opened for inspection. A couple of the knives were missing.
I'm glad I only have one foot in this state.

I'm over it Tom. I realize you're just a big air bag anyway ;D No ball metro's is right. Boxer might not make it this time...she was close last time and people here are pissed at her. Morning show on KSFO today said to be careful what we wish for....After BO, it's Big Joe...then Nanc...then Billary. We have to win in 2010.
Oh, and it's spelled K-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A Steyr...you missed the second I.
I'm too busy getting ready to go kill poor defenseless young antlerless elk in Washington with my recurve to worry about that latest BS being pulled in Sacramento.
I'm also too busy getting ready to transfer back to the engine company with a $17K pay cut to save an older brother's job who can't transfer. He'd be laid off if I didn't do this. Lucky for us both I can afford to do that. I'm sick of fire prevention here in California since they've turned us into nothing more than bill collecting, fine levying, ticket writing b-crats instead of real inspectors and investigators who actually catch arsonists and put real bad guys away. Effing libtards out here are raising fees on every damn thing to pay for their bloated carcasses. They have me fining people $210 for weed abatement violations. Used to be I could just tell the guy to cut his weeds and move on to something real important. And the guy would cut his weeds. They've taken away my ability to actually work with normal people and develop relationships with the businesses in my districts like I used to. Now it's write them a ticket, get them a fine, make them pay. All the special interest BS out here with all the libtard feel good propositions and measures everyone voted in with no way to pay for them and now police and fire can't even do our jobs they way they need to be done. So, I've been doing things the old way anyway and basically telling the bosses to eff-off...what are you gonna do? transfer me back to a fire engine? UHHH...OK!!!
Besides...there is much more effed up stuff going on in this state and country than energy effecient TV sets...We have to win in 2010, turn back this BS health care system they are forcing down our throats, keep the pressure on cap and tax, keep the pressure on saving our 2A rights, support the NRA and CRPA in the effort to reverse the ammo bill, convice Obama and Holder that trying terrorists in NYC is a bad thing, get that SOB to support our troops in Afganistan, stop the SOB from bowing to foreign leaders, stem the tide of illegal immigration, stop the SOB from making the illegals legal, get ready to kill zombies, make sure our ammo is stocked up, guns are clean, and that we know how to use them, keep our go bags updated, plan our escape from the big event, make sure we have plenty of fresh water, MRE's and emergency gear stored and ready, keep our heads on a swivel so no bad guys get us before we can be aware and avoid them....So forgive me if I'm not over excited that Kali is at it again with energy effecient TV sets....

TFR, you were in a perfect position to shaft the tax and spend Libs, Ticket every minor violation, then explain that you would have just given them a warning but the bankrupt state needs to raise money to finance the raise your legislators voted themselves.

I predict massive lay offs just after the election in 2010. Reality is, its the state payroll bankrupting this state, not the "welfare" system. granted they both need major cuts.

In most states the state payroll IS a welfare system.
