The Army Times reports that Army weapons officials have presented to Congress six proposed upgrades to the M4. They are ...
* Heavy barrel. This will increase the rate of fire and decrease heat problems but at the expense of weight.
* Add gas-piston system so that the carbine will run cleaner.
* Improve trigger pull.
* Adding monolithic full length rail system for added strength. Makes sense, but is expensive.
* Add electronic round counter to pistol grip to track rounds fired. Is this really needed?
* Ambidextrous controls.
A special “integrated product team” will evaluate the pros and cons of each of the proposed improvements and decide which options, if any, will give the service the “biggest bang for the buck,” Tamilio said.
The team will be made up of multiple agencies such as the Infantry Center, Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center and Program Executive Office Soldier. It will also include soldiers with combat experience and members of the small-arms community.
Representatives from the Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force will also get a chance to weigh in on the decision for future improvements to the M4.

Why do we need an electronic round counter to track rounds fired? >:( Most of that other stuff sounds pretty good though. Watch them put all that bull crap on the guns and leave out the gas piston systems.
-
Typical government. What they need to do is make the thing work as reliably as an AK-47 in bad conditions. Instead they'll manage to use a tremendous amount of taxpayer dollars to make it worse. Does government run health care ring a bell? Bill T.

Gee, I can't wait for BM's retarded comments.

the only prob with the m4 is the 5.56 chambering...
-
I would suggest getting rid of 5.56 and going with the 6.8 or going 7.62x39 with a rifled system that works. Get rid of gas operated and go with the piston idea. Why carry a weapon that does not agree with your enemy??? They carry 7.62x39. Great round, just expand on it. Additionally you would be able to use the ammo of your enemy to defeat him/her!!!!!!!!!

Sorry guys.

Easiest fix....upgrade the bullet to something like the old 5.45x39 "poison bullet" that served the Soviets so well. Better terminal performance w/o loss in ranged accuracy.
If the military upgrades to anything, it'll be the SCAR. Politics & contracts and all.....
-
If the military up grades you are far more likely to get the electronic BS than a more reliable action or larger round.
The idea of using a Com/bloc round like the 7.62X39 or 5.45 X 39 will not happen.
Since all that will be allowed is FMJ going to an even smaller round will only compound the problem.
Given the number of women, and smaller statured men in the Service nowadays 7.62 X 51 may be a bit much for them, look for some compromise such as the 6.5 or 6.8.
Interesting note, The Marines and Navy have been interested in the 6mm range since the late 1800's

Even the Garand was originally designed as a sub .30 cal.

It seems to me that all of the M4s problems come from the 14.5" barrel. Less power, less reliability, etc. M16s work a lot better. The guys who need a more compact weapon would be better served by sub-machineguns.
-
The M16 has been undergoing some kind of "fix" ever since Nam. When will it finally be seen it sucks? Dump it and find something that works. Even the AK was head and shoulders above the M16.
If the .223 is not working, use what does, 7.62x39 is a man killer. Use it.
For what we will waste on R&D over the five or more years to find another platfrom we could buy AK's and save money.
We have some of the great minds of the 15th century running things.

.....in .45 ACP 10 mm
fixed

After using one for 16 years, that is probally the reason I have not purchased one for my home. I think I will stick with the sks's and the ak's and what money I save on the prices I will use to buy more ammo.

I told you guys I would post some porn. Here is two of my favorite ladies.
-
9mm .223 is easier for people to shoot and qualify with, compared to .45acp .308.

More porn. ;D
