Title: LAYOFF POLICEMEN, FIREMEN AND TEACHERS
Post by: Rastus on January 27, 2010, 10:32:40 PM
Every wonder why police, firemen and teachers are usually the first ones on the chopping block when budget cuts force layoffs?

It is the same reason that BO wanted to cut the military medical but he did not even think of cutting his or the other politicans medical. They believe that since they are in power that everybody but them should suffer, or tighten their belts.

Yeah, that and option 6 which I added "IT'S GEORGE BUSH'S FAULT."

You can go back and vote for option 6 if you would like, the poll is not locked.   ;)

I think this was a fairly straightforward and accurate poll....I didn't see any tilt towards any conclusions...did you?   ::)

Steubenville Police layed off 6 officers even while the town descends into the lowest levels of hell. Drug dealers literally run the town. Budget issues my ass. We paid all this money for a now Jail 5 years ago that we can't even afford to use and now were laying off the ony public servants that actually do anything about the crime problem. And this past year they decided to build a new town hall. WTF! Why not hire back the LEOs and increase the police presence. It's all designed so that the politicians have a campaign item to sell.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but here, LEO, FD and ED  are by far the least effecnet agencys when it comes to using tax dallors smartly.  So if you are going to make cuts, cutting people that throw away money is a place one would start... sadly, what ends up happening is they make cuts to services, not to overhead/adminstration like they should.

.............. It's all designed so that the politicians have a campaign item to sell.

I agree with that but I think it's worse than that.  It is my observation that greedy, self-serving politicians sacrifice the public good, break the faith of those willing to sacrifice for the public good, and contribute to chaos by offering up those persons (which everyone rightfully wants to support and see do well) as the nation's most common form of extortion, taxation, to force the "little people" who work to pay for the politician's mostly unfettered vote buying.

Social programs, mostly a tool consistently misused to garner political support...i.e., buy votes.

Extortion.  Plain and simple.  Please do not misinterpret, I believe that thieves, rapists and murders are vermin to be rounded up but in a national sense the real criminals., the enablers (those people who would misuse their public office for the most common form of extorion in the U.S.) are the politicians.  It is the "real" criminal, the vote buying self-serving politician, that puts the nation most at risk of failure.

I hear a lot of people wanting to sweep out the no good politicians...but their boy is a good ole boy, you know...so we keep these slugs in.  I for one do not believe every person in office should be voted out wholesale for there are good and faithful among us or we would have gone down some time ago...but those who would suggest and purport that laying off police, fireman and teachers in lieu of other cuts makes it obvious that the public's best interest is not in the mind of that person.

I truly feel  it is to scare people into giving away more of their Rights.  Any other benefit the government gains form it wiether local or federal is just a bonus.

It's "Payback" to the voters for refusing the last tax robbery.

I'm with you on that point!  They want the average citizens to feel the pain.

I would think it is more like they want to flog us for not bowing to their "fiscal needs".  Another great fiscal scam is dedicating funds to police, fire and education diverting the then available general funds to their pork and keep the focus on police, fire and education so they can enrich and empower themselves on the back of the working man from the general funds.  Around here, when they need more pork money they call on the roads as well....3/4 of the "dedicated" gas tax does not go where it was voted to go...so they run short on roads and raise sales taxes, etc. to increase the general fund.   Sometimes they hit up the parks.

I have never, not once, had them ask to raise taxes to help with the social programs....doesn't take much brain power to figure that one out.

Sarcasm alert !

Well DUH, you don't think their going to do something stupid like cutting perks and staff for the OFFICIALS do you ?
Or some really crazy notion like cutting the SALARIES of the officials.

Sarcasm ends.
For now  ;D

It's all about sharing the pain. At least according to our city council. We make more money, have better benefits and cost the city more money.  We are the evil public safety unions. We suck up a larger percentage of the budget than the employees at City Hall that work in the City Manager's office. City Hall takes every opportunity to tell anyone who will listen that the EPSU's are causing the cutting of all the other "important" services the city provides.  Anyway, I'm getting sick...can't go on anymore.

What about the achor babies whose programs we have to cut?

Seriously, the city I work for closed two fire houses this year on a rotating basis...which means on the 2 x 4 schedule we work one of our busiest houses in closed two days, open two days, closed two days, while the other house is open two, closed two days...you get the picture. We have cut staffing by 12 firefighters and four inspectors. The other day we had a major fire in the first due district of the busiest house...you guessed it, closed. First water on the fire in 6 minutes, 30 seconds. The council praised our "quick response within the standards set by the council"....First water on the fire was done by the third due engine who arrived first since the third due was closed and the second due was on a medical call.

Our cops aren't fairing much better...bomb squad cut, detectives cut, hiring freeze, K-9 facing cuts.

And...we have given back on our contracts...taken no raises, paying higher percentages on our health care...so we are helping out. But what is happening is that our asshats in the council are greenies that are stopping all economic development in the city in favor of bike boulevards and roundabouts instead of private industry jobs which create sales tax revenue.

Might be different if it had been one of their homes.........but then again, asshats disease is infectious and hard to cure.

So far 22 out of 22 people think that laying off police, firemen and teachers 1st is a form of extortion to make people vote for taxes.

I love this board.

The sad thing is that my department buys used equipment and we work on it ourselves most of the time to keep it running. We had to trade off old equipment to get something better and most of the time we pay for our own equipment. Bought slim jims, holsters, duty weapons, and some uniforms out of our own pay checks. Most of our budget gets raided by council members that want their special projects done (paving their street).

It's tax voting time again.

So, I'm bringing this up once more.

And now that I'm getting close to drawing SS, it's more than academic when they talk about the cuts.

I paid for my SS retirement.   I overpaid actually.   If I live for 30 more years, I'll barely get back 60cents on the dollar for my contributions!!!   It's not an entitlement.  And Teachers, LEOs and Firemen (persons) are not an option.

My absentee ballot was waiting from me when I arrived home yesterday.  I looked it over last evening, and I found a State Constitutional Amendment I was not aware was coming:  "Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to remove state lawmakers' power to set their own salaries, and instead establish an independent, citizens-only council to prescribe salaries of lawmakers?"

Room for corruption, even in that type of system, but I like the idea.

By the way, I am not going to waste my vote through stupidity and pull a Brian Zins  >:(

One that would make that same situation better on the national level is if the "cost of living" increases for Congress and folks on SS and other programs used the same consumer index to determine if an increase was due.

From what I understand, cost of food and energy are  not included in the SS calculation because they say they are too volatile...but they are included for the congress increase...I guess they settle down on the day theirs are calculated.

Public Servants controlling there own wage sounds a lot like foxes guarding the hen house.
