Title: Frankenstein Range Report
Post by: twyacht on January 29, 2011, 05:32:40 AM
Had a chance to rummage through the ammo cans for the "breaking-in" ceremony. I grabbed a variety of .223 & 5.56x45 ammo, old GI mil-surp mags, P-Mags, Stoner mags, my factory Sig556 mags, even an old Orlite mag.

Had Remington 55gr. .223
Wolf, yes even some .223 Wolf.
PMC Bronze 55 gr. .223
Federal 55 gr. .223
XM193 5.56
Silver Bear 62gr. HP
M855 62gr. Green Tip (not many, 1 mag worth),... ::)
American Tactical Tracer Rds.
Loaded up, off we go.
Very methodically I started with the Rem/ Wally World .223. with a target at 50 yds. Two rds. in a Stoner mag. One shot. and had my shooting partner grab the ejected rd. to inspect. Just in case, I wanted to check the firing pin strike, condition of brass, etc,..Second rd. to make sure the bolt locked open on last rd.
NO issues. It's so light compared to my Sig, very easy to shoot, love the Ergo Grip, and VLTOR stock! Thank you bafsu!!

Rotated through two magazines. Ran a patch, with a little Hoppe's on it down the bore, Lather, Rinse, Repeat.,.. ::)

The Single-Stage Bushmaster Trigger is "SCARY" Light..But in a good way. Not like my two stage Sig556 trigger, and not as soft as my friends M&P 15T's ..Very crisp. "I LOVE THE MICULEK COMPENSATOR"
Thank you m25 for the tip on it. I urge all of you AR folks to invest in some form of comp.....They make follow up shots, and muzzle rise a thing of the past. Although, the concussive blast for folks standing around me was slightly larger.

The shots were ALL printing very high, at 50yds. Higher at 100 yds.. I adjusted my sight picture and made hits. But, thanks again to m25, after a telephonic consult....Said:
" Just Raise the front Sight"..... :P Well, I didn't have an AR sight adj. tool. (Now I do),...but I kinda felt dumb to not bring one. Regardless, that issue, was the ONLY issue. and I have laser bore-sighted it, (with the tool), and should be spot on.

Ate all ammo, with all mags, not one hiccup. Mags dropped freely, tap-rack-and rolled perfectly. Ejected shells had great hang time. The night and day difference between a comp'd carbine, and a non-comp'd is the big thing. Keith has since ordered a comp, and VLTOR rear stock.

Also helped Keith zero his 30/30 Marlin, and the G21, 27rd. extended mags are a BEAR to load after 17-18rds. Also NO issues, except I couldn't fight all 27 rds. in there... ::)

Plus met Guido. This guy is great.

Shoots nothing but Black Hills ammo in his Colt Carbine, drives an S-class Mercedes, little Italian fella, that can shoot like a "hitman"...(I guess he's a retired hitman"...) ;)

Ordered the Enidine hydraulic buffer from botach tactical to reduce recoil even more....What a great rifle. Next will be a custom upper. 8)

Really horrible build TW.....when it breaks, and it WILL!  Send it too me, I'll spank it for you and give it the old once over....speak badly to it, get it all dirty and send it back...

Someday!

 ;)

Seriously, nice looking rifle, enjoy!

That Marlin looks like a POS too, send it as well!   ;) ;D

I gotta be honest here, professionally speaking, of course: The relationship will never work out, TW.......it is doomed to fail......and having a PhD in firearms counseling, I feel it is my duty and obligation to offer free sessions to that rifle in order to get it 'straightened out'.....it will take time, lots and lots of time in therapy......but I feel I must offer, being the good neighbor to the North that I am.

 :D

However, IF YOU MUST KEEP IT ALL TO YOUR SELF, then it must be nurtured and cared for regularly!!

 ;D

(and oh yeah, very nice rifle!!)  ;)

Doomed, I say!!  ;D

"Ate all ammo,"

When I read that you had some Wolf ammo I wondered about that.

I too would like to hear more on the Wolf. You get arned of of it, hell DPMS does so on the manual. But I wonder f there is really a good reason or is it just "Cain't shoot that commie crap out a 'merican rifle. That ain't right". ;D Seriously, I would like your input on fouling, cycling and the like because if it works that is definately a money saver.

Yes, there are good reasons for it. Steel cases don't act the same as brass and Wolf uses some sort of "plastic" (polymer ? ) coating on their ammo.
If I remember correctly TW said he used the "heavier" Bolt carrier in his build so that may overcome the problems.

That FA bolt carrier might be a game changer. Its not only heavier, but I would assume its designed to deal with more fouling.

The weight alone does that. It creates more inertia.

The Wolf, smoked more, smelled funny, but functioned for 30rds. (I have never been a fan of Wolf ammo. My Sig556 just won't cycle it, as if it's not got enough ass to get the Sig bolt far enough back to pick up the next rd.).

I know it works great in other folks AR's. So hey, not a big deal. I just wanted to throw a smorgasboard of mags and ammo through it, to see what worked,...Thankfully, it all did.

Perhaps the Daniel Defense BCG has more "meat" on it to cycle Wolf..

Either way. Total rd. count was 210 rds. 7 different mag rotations, with several different rds. The Silver Bears are actually very good rds. My Sig loves em' also.

I don't think Wolf coats their rds. with that sticky polymer crap anymore like they used to, I might be wrong, but  thought they stopped doing that.

Get the Miculek comp. for $30 at CheaperThanDirt. It's well worth it, with the Ergo Grip. What a difference.

Thanks again for the kind words, and support. I blame all of YOU at DRTV for this.

My general rule is a full auto BCG and a H1 buffer from a 16" carbine length system will shoot everything. If you've got a 14.5" barrel go to the H2 buffer. I've got a 14.5" barrel with a mid-length gas system. It has the port opened a little over factory and runs a H3 buffer. 100% reliable. That's the great thing about the AR platform, a little tweak in the buffer, spring, gas port etc. and you can make them run 100% on just about any ammo. If you shoot much steel case make sure you have the extractor upgrade (really you should do this regardless considering how cheap it is) and just keep an eye on your bolt face and feedramps. The wolf stuff actually has the polymer lube that does a decent job but the bear steel case stuff can eat up a bolt and feedramps, especially if you have regular rifle and not M4 ramps.

Thanks bafsu, I paid extra for the extended M4 ramps, will get the extractor upgrade kit from Brownells, (+/- $12.00), I have a spare complete BCG, and charging handle, and soon will order another complete lower parts kit, just to have a complete set of parts, (in case).

Trying to start thinking about spare parts, and getting them. I'll stick to non-Wolf ammo for me, but it's good to know it will function, if needed.

The Hydraulic Buffer from Enidine,(on order) will make it work even better, or I'll save it for the next build.

The bear stuff states it zinc-coated brass (silver bear), I think the brown bear is steel.

Take care.

Yes it's the brown bear stuff I was referring too, I'd avoid that or much of it. I found if you get one of the real small fishing tackle cases, they're like 6X4X3 and have snap down lids with adjustable trays on both sides, like $5 at WalMart you can make a nice spare parts kit that's very portable. Buying an extra lower kit isn't a bad idea so you have a spare one of everything but some stuff you'll probably never use the spare, like the mag catch or bolt stop where it's not a bad idea to keep 3 or more of every detent, spring and pin, those are the things you lose at the worst times. Keep the small tackle box, springs and little parts are very cheap from Palmetto State Armory, most under $1 ea. I can't tell you how nice it is having that little box with all your small spares, a couple allen wrenches in common rifle sizes (like MBUIS etc.) and 1 or 2 magpul dummy rounds, they have lots of uses, punch etc. It slips right into one of the outside pockets on most tactical rifle cases. I've made lots of friends at the range by having a spare________ you name the little part. I couldn't tell you the times I could've sold a $1 spring for $20 if I was that type of person but I've made some good friends by giving away a $1 spring to a stranger at the right time.  Just remember on the tiny parts that like to fly away under spring pressure the old 1 is none and 2 is 1 rule really applies here.
