Title: Mini 30
Post by: gunman42782 on September 25, 2012, 02:36:29 PM
Have owned many Mini 14s, but this is my first Mini 30.  Traded a couple single action revolvers for it.

This is my first target I shot pretty fast this morning before work.  Kneeling, with arms on the bench, at 50 yards.  8 rounds, 6 touching.

That's a whole lot better than they used to back in the day. I'm surprised and happy for you. Let us know how it does at 100.
Good luck

You can say that again.   it use to be you could hit a pie plate at 100 yds maybe twice before the barrel was so warm you could not keep it on the plate.  A mag ro two thur and you were lucky to be on paper.

Just got home from the range wringing out my new to me Mini 30. I am very happy with it. Bought 4 new Ruger 20 round mags from Midway, and 1000 Russian cheap 7.62x39 from Sportsmans Guide. Shot 100 rounds through her today with nary a bobble. Have heard different opinions on if the Mini 30 would eat the steel cased Russian stuff, but so far so good. And this isn't even Wolff brand, it is generic Russian (of course they are all made at the same place.) And laquer coated. Have heard people say that the Russian primers are so hard the Mini wouldn't set them off, but I honestly don't see how that is possible, as hard as the Minis hammers drop. Anyway, if you guys remember that target I posted above at 50 yards, the gun will do that all day long. At 100 I had some vertical stringing, but still could keep them on the paper. With open sights. I think if I ever decide to put a scope on this that it would shoot pretty dang good, as this morning was still half dark when I was shooting. I shot untill the rain set in. Well, now the real fun part, got to clean it up.

Glad to hear it. I always had a soft spot for minis just because I think they look cool, and they are reliable. I couldn't hit crap with mine (TAB pretty much described the accuracy) and so I got rid of it, but I still like the things, they're just a fun and super reliable gun. If yours eats the cheap shat and shoots  under 6" or so at 100 yards you've got a great defensive carbine. However, I'd put a red dot on the thing rather than a scope. Its more in keeping with its purpose, and capabilities.

When I bought my AR, I considered selling my Mini-14....but decided to keep it because of the durability.

When it comes to the 7.72x39 round, I would probably lean toward the Mini-30 myself (not trashing the AK, but I like the Mini platform for various reasons).

There is a company out there called Har-Bar that makes an accurizing system for the Mini style rifles. I will link to it below. It is kind of pricey, but if the claims are on the spot, it could make a real 'shooter' out of a Mini. A decent machinist with the proper equipment could make a similar device to stabilize the barrel and prevent vertical stringing.

Great thread and info.  I've had the Ruger tactical mini-30 on my want list and had planned to be over Christmas spending and paying for suppressors enough by next summer to get one, this was going to be my next gun purchase.  I'll be optimistic and plan to own one by mid-summer. ;D

The Mini 30 has gone crazy price wise in the last week since Sandy hook.  I ahve seen a couple on Gunbroker bring 2X dollars from 10 days ago.  Both new and used Minis.  Better get some mags now while you can, if you can find some.

The mini 30 makes a great hog gun. I changed the rear sight on my gun with a adjustable Tech sight, and a hogue overmold stock. The 7.62x39 hits hard and recoil is minimal.
