Title: A small request from me...
Post by: Teresa Heilevang on August 13, 2008, 01:58:10 PM
This is just a small request that I would like to ask of everyone.
(and of myself included actually...... :-[)

I would like to ask that we, as posters, please try to refrain from posting anything that is racially charged or advocates violence.
That is not what any of us are about.. even though we all do have very passionate strong opinions on many issues.. we must remember that Down Range is read and looked upon as a leading website in gun use and gun ownership.
We are also starting to have a large following of readers in the political section, So once again..although we all pretty much feel the same way....we need to remember to post what we morally and politically can stand behind.

I hope everyone is okay with this.. I had a hard time picking the right words in saying what I wanted to say. I hate censorship of any kind..and this really isn't censorship.. it is just 'not getting too radical' in our postings.
Down Range in my opinion is a cut above the rest..and there is a reason for that. It is because of the integrity and class of our forum members. This forum is unlike any out there and we hear it time and time again how awesome this place is and how great the people are who are members of it .
I just want to keep it that way.

Thanks so much .... :-*

Wow...that dress code article is absurd. That is definitely the litmus test as to what is important in society; materialism vs. character.

Wow...that dress code article is absurd. That is definitely the litmus test as to what is important in society; materialism vs. character.

Another way to look at it is form over function. And I have lived in that world, computer consulting firm. My son was surprised when I said I had to put my uniform on (business suit) - he naturally thought uniform like fireman or policeman, but it was a uniform - white shirt and all. Of course the people I worked for were uptight (like this guy Birleson seems to be) - I made a joke to one of the sales people (I was not in sales) that I was growing a pony tail and within 10 minutes my boss had scoured the office, found me, and demanded to know why I was growing a pony tail! She let me know in no uncertain terms - no ponytail.

IBM used to have a dress code identical to Burleson's, a long time ago. Form over function almost always wins in this society - it's all for the children - manipulated by those who want us in another form - socialism, no guns, etc.

I do not believe M'ette's post was meant to call for political correctness. I think that when we show others the same dignity and respect we have come to expect from them it should all work out well.

If Jesse Jackson posts on this board his desire to physically neuter the Democrat Presidential Candidate I am definitely okay with telling him in no uncertain terms to express his thoughts elsewhere.

Other than that  I am unaware of anyone who has violated any formal or informal board etiquette that involved the use of liberal code phrases "advocating violence" or "racially charged" post.

I did have some "smart donkeys" make some unnecessary ad hominem comments to me a few threads back, but they were handled quickly without any great fuss or difficulty.

Perhaps someone could point me to examples of exactly what  M'Ette means?

Many thanks.

I am sometimes puzzled by the lack of understanding that folks have of the Internet and computer technology in general. After 30 years in the industry let me provide a couple of points...

The government (Feds, State and Local) spend BILLIONS of tax dollars on computer systems. A good portion these days are dedicated to nothing other than scanning and analyzing the text on the Internet. This is besides having people simply read stuff out there in cyberspace.

Anything you post, you should view as being a permanent public record. Like in FOREVER. Nothing gets deleted. Copies are made that you don't even know about. The Hosting companies, the website owners and internet archivers and yes the government all have point in time copies of nearly everything out there. Heck you should assume the Internet pipes themselves are tapped into by the government and simply redirected to their systems. Delete doesn’t mean delete and hitting the enter or send key is a commitment.

Anything you post, you should assume is and will be read and evaluated by parties (ie the government) that you may not want to deal with. Like in arrest and prosecute, because THEY think you did something wrong. If it gets to that point you will have to prove otherwise on your dime.

You are not anonymous in cyberspace. If you think so you are just plain wrong.

And finally here is the main point. In this political season everyone is pretty polarized. Anything like a joke about harming a politician or seeing harm to one, is not a joke until proven otherwise. So don't even go there. Marshallette has a responsibility to protect MB and his reputation and brand from potential harm and us from ourselves. So now she has established a solid set of ground rules. She done good.

The best answer to a Marshal'ette request is:

Yes Ma'am.

P.S. I certainly don't want to have any of the "spooks" raise an eyebrow for posting on, IMHO, a truly great forum.

There wasn't any racially charged post JohnJ. To be honest with you.. it was actually something that I and another forum member threw out there that was said in jest.. but still would not have been looked on that way by Big Brother. I take full blame as I kinda started it.  Everyone else's posts are fine and no one has to worry at all about the way that they post or the things that they say. Don't worry about it.. it isn't a big deal at all where this forum is concerned.
It was only 0.1% of the whole forum that was a problem..and it is taken care of ..

Continue On and As You Were Troops..  ;)

And I use M'Ette cause it is shorter to write.. and you all are like my family.. so you could even shorten it to "Ette if you wanted and it won't bother me..

((And no Haz... you CAN'T call me """THAT"""".. so just forget it!)) ;D

Got it. Everything you say or do or do not say or do not do is sufficient to buy you a ticket to the Gulag.

What amazes me is how quickly people think themselves into a society that does not exist until their beliefs bring it into existence.

To ask people to self censor their posts or live in fear on the basis of meaningless phrases like "advocating violence" or "racially charged" comes right out of the Soviet playbook.

Michael Bane did a podcast and contributed to a thread about what your car carry rifle should be if  simultaneous copycat riots break out in multiple cities across the country. Was he "advocating violence"  or making" racially charged" comments? No,he was on a gun board discussing the use and deployment of various weapons under various circumstances regardless of what the Mike Nifongs of the world think he meant.

These phrases are the type of slippery crypto covert mind meld terms of art Fabian Socialists love to toss around because everyone thinks they know what they mean when they are in fact meaningless.

If specific behaviours by specific individuals need attention, they should be attended specifically.

Blaming the many for the behaviours of the few is what got us into this mess now.  Ban all guns, knives, slingshots, and salt and pepper shakers because SOMEONE (unknown percentage) may poke their eye out.

Does not work that way in the real world. Never has and never will, as the former Soviet Socialist Union discovered after a century of doom and despair.

Geez!!!
This is a really great forum attached to a really great website attached to really great TV and radio, all of which advance, promote, and celebrate our 2nd amendment rights as well as our passion for our firearms. Being a gun lover is controversial and we all have a responsibility to ourselves and those who share our interests to protect and promote our views. People other than ourselves read these threads to see what we're all about, and I'm sure they see a lot more good than they thought they'd find.

So why be IRRESEPONSIBLE to yourself and those who share your interests by posting rants or insisting on a right to post rants that will discolor our beliefs or even draw attention from facists. (Not that anyone has gone that far- I'm not the judge of that) It's not about freedoms, it's about common sense. If you stand out on the street corner yelling to your neighbor that you think that any of the presidential candidates should be shot...well, see how long that lasts.

I love this forum and particpate in it because it's my BEST resource for visiting with people who love something I love. I can get in a political argument anywhere any time. I don't need to come here to do that, and I don't need to come here to test the limits of my right to free speech or anything else. So if some lines of discussion could cause a problem, I say DON'T TALK ABOUT IT because I would much rather restrict my subjects of discussion than lose the benefits of the great organization that MB and the Marshalls have set up here for us all.

Like I said, it's common sense, and my feeling is if you want to rant about something that could cause a problem for our hosts, do it somewhere else.

Geez!!!
Like I said, it's common sense, and my feeling is if you want to rant about something that could cause a problem for our hosts, do it somewhere else.

WHAT IS COMMON SENSE? This is without doubt the most Kafkaesque thread I have seen in 10+ years on the Internet!

Geez!  By her own admission a MODERATOR of this forum did a "bad thing".

No one seems to know what that "bad thing" was, it is not available for peer review or any view (except the super secret government archive at Gitmo where all deleted posts go to live for future prosecution)

Her response to HER OWN ACTIONS is to post a "sticky thread" at the top of the message board admonishing other people not to do "bad things".

And I agreed.

If Jesse Jackson arrives on this board to suggest he personally wants to neuter the presumptive Democrat Presidential Nominee  we should all join in a unified front and tell him to go pound sand.

Until then I request someone to point me to other examples of "bad things" because I have not seen any when I visit this board.

Now if everyone wants to have a group hug and sing Kumbaya I will do that too AND recite the Boy Scout Oath because, goshdarnit, I am opposed to people who do "bad things".

But I do draw the line at blindly following people around in some strange circle dance because  everyone agrees" it is a good idea".

Apparently in 21st Century Gulag America that is a prosecutable offense.

So be it.

Just sheesh.

John Jacob.. I don't know you from sicuum..never have met you...  but I will talk to you like I have met you and that I do know you personally.. okay?
Which anyone who knows me knows that I don't mince words with the people I know..  ;) I can't talk pig-latten  :) but I can talk redneck. ;D

First.....for your information and anyone else's information...and since you seem to want to blow this totally out of proportion..I'll give you the skinny on the scoop..
Then?....... will you just continue to post like you always have? Quit getting your boxers in a knot and just frickin' post like you always have.   Is it a Deal??!??

From day one there has never been ANY posts in this whole damned forum that has been offensive to me or to anyone else that is a member of this forum.. as we are all like minded.   But there are between 3,000-10,000 people who come to Down Range a day to read and open up at least 20,000 pages of what we are posting.. and they read. That is fine.. but sometimes there are gov. people who are hired to watch forums like these & they do target certain things...

Doesn't have anything to do with Jessie Jackson or black people..... or any other kind of people..  and the racial part was put in there by me because ... well... I don't know why.. it just was.. Disregard it if it makes you uncomfortable. ((( now it's my turn to say "'sheeesee"   ::))))
and by my own admission....I didn't do a BAD THING.
I SAID something that made others ( who cared about me ) want to give me a heads up on the fact that that they thought I should take it off because things like that are not taken as funny ( like we think that they are)...and in fact are considered serious.. IF and I say IF anything major should happen to the political figure.

Tomboggan and I got a bit carried away with an Obama thread and I flipped out a snide comment about snipers and he followed up on it with a bunch of other off the cuff stuff. Might be that only a handful of people read it.. and then again maybe 8,000 read it. Point is......... Out of all of the million or so words on here..those 40 words might have.. down the line... gotten us both in lots of unnecessary hassle.

Am I shaking in my shoes about it?
 Absolutely not..
Am I going to monitor or read everything that comes down the pipe checking for "stuff?"
Not just no.. but Hell No...

But it got me to thinking that sometimes we all get caught up in things and just don't think when we shoot from the hip.  99% of the time it's no big deal..then you have that teeny little .000001%..  ::)

But I will repeat. Down Range is a cut above the rest ( in my opinion).   There isn't a lot of mentally unstable  rag tag radicals and the posts aren't full of the F*** words. I go to a lot of gun forums and after awhile I leave. I may be on the same page as most of them..but sometimes it is just "too much on the edge" for me. ( And trust me.. you should know by now that I am NOT your namby pamby female where guns and 'boy' stuff is concerned. ..
I'm pretty "on the edge "myself sometimes.. ;)

So, to tell you the truth I almost just quietly deleted the little dab that was in there and forgot it..  it bothered the hell out of me to go ahead and post that request. (went against everything that I am all about as a matter of fact.)
But a very good friend of mine( retired undercover cop) had read the posts...... and he called me.. He scolded me for being stupid and posting something like that and ..after talking to him .. I decided to make sure everyone else "thought " before they got 'way out there" with their emotions. I deleted the "dab"..and wrote my post.

I am not asking you nor would I ever ask you to blindly follow people around in some strange circle dance because  everyone agrees" it is a good idea". You can do whatever the hell you want to do... as I will.
But I will end this by looking you square in the eye and saying:
The one single thing that I ask is that you don't post on here .IN THIS FORUM.. words of putting cross hairs on a political figure.
Now!!.. Is that clear enough for you?

So if you want to have a group hug and sing Kumbaya and recite the Boy Scout Oath.. by all means.. start the circle and we can all shift our guns and  holsters around and get comfortable and start hugging.  ;D

Kafkaesque-

"Kafkaesque" is an auctorial descriptive which is used to describe concepts, situations, and ideas which are reminiscent of the literary work of Prague writer Franz Kafka, particularly his novels The Trial and The Metamorphosis.

The term, which is quite fluid in definition, has also been described as "marked by a senseless, disorienting, often menacing complexity: Kafkaesque bureaucracies" and "marked by surreal distortion and often a sense of impending danger: Kafkaesque fantasies of the impassive interrogation, the false trial, the confiscated passport ... haunt his innocence" — The New Yorker.

It can also describe an intentional distortion of reality by powerful but anonymous bureaucrats. "Lack of evidence is treated as a pesky inconvenience, to be circumvented by such Kafkaesque means as depositing unproven allegations into sealed files ..." Another definition would be an existentialist state of ever-elusive freedom while existing under unmitigatable control.

The adjective refers to anything suggestive of Kafka, especially his nightmarish type of narration, in which characters lack a clear course of action, the ability to see beyond immediate events, and the possibility of escape. The term's meaning has transcended the literary realm to apply to real-life occurrences and situations that are incomprehensibly complex, bizarre, or illogical.

John Jacob- I dont know you and all of your posts have been cool, but I really do not like the fact that you are jumping on M'Ette for just telling everyone to be mindful cause she believes she crossed a line, not knowing till later, cause she was caught up in the moment. I take her advice with much respect from someone that has considerable more knowledge than me. You can write what ever you want, but she just wanted to put out there she made a mistake, and to have other people on here be mindful of what is said so that gun owners do not get targeted for more slander by media and society. We are going into a time where any bit of negativity could help the cause of losing something near and dear to all of us. That is all I have to say. M'Ette is one the kindest, goodhearted, most beautiful woman I have had the oppertunity of meeting and will defend her with my life if that situation should ever arise. And in this instance I believe she was trying to protect us all from ourselves. I never read the post but have a good idea of what it said. And she is right to have written this post for the future of us and this website.

John, Now I see how you manage to find stuff to blog about, you are making a mountain range out of a single mole hill and you are so blinded by your own sense of paranoia that you STILL don't get it when it is explained to you. M'ette did not even use any big words. She made a post and I expanded on a theme that should something bad happen could in hindsight be taken as encouraging political violence against a specific person, a FRIEND of hers gave her some FRIENDLY advice. I don't know you, except by your posts. If I posted that we should just take what we need then you committed a robbery and cited my post as your inspiration it would cause me and the website legal and PR problems that we just don't need to deal with.
As for those a$$holes at the Huffington Post, do you REALLY want to model your behavior on people who's actions fit the definition of insanity ? (Performing an action repeatedly and expecting different results) If you do then I'll take your bet on last years Super Bowl.
Jeez, this thread should have pretty much died after the first few posts, hopefully it will now.

PS for KSail, Thanks for the definition, I've often heard the term, but never saw an exact definition before.

This is what our friend John J has to say about us

Anybody remember Bill Clinton’s pledge to put a 100,000 new cops on the streets of America?

Maybe he did but no one knew exactly what he meant.

Even as we watch the Olympics in our easy chairs, cops and former cops and wannabe cops fan out over the Internet and the countryside communicating their talking points about what constitutes the behaviour of a “Good American”

In the latest example it seems Marshal’ette Halloway, a moderator on the Downrange TV  message boards, got a midnight call from Officer Friendly at JBT.Gov who chastised her for her failings as moderator.

Which, in turn, prompted her to write one of the most Kafkaesque posts I have witnessed in my 10 + years on Internet Message Boards-complete with incoherent code phrases urging us all to
avoid “racially charged” posts and not to “advocate violence” as though some how we all plot and plan to create mayhem at the drop of a hat. ( I thought Democrats already cornered that market anyway.)

Well soldier, the best comment I can make is to remind you we do not "lose" anything we do not give away. You certainly learned that when you took an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.

Your character reference for Mrs. Halloway aside, which I am sure she appreciates, please remember she is an adult with adult responsibilities- one of which is not to reinforce stereotypes of a Right to Keep and Bear Arms Community with a broad brush admonishment to eschew "violence"and "racially charged posts" especially in her capacity as moderator of a high visibility gun forum.

As I stated earlier, if she has some specific action by a specific individual to address she should do so specifically. To blame the many for the actions of a few is not the way of a liberty loving society and I will not silently allow such blame to pass unremarked.

Thank you for your service to our country

Harsh words from my blogger mentor.

Of all the people who visited my blog from Downrange TV only two actually read Mark Penman's Parable of the Good Cop.

Since he is dead, I think he will not mind if I reprint it here:

Bob Franklin was heading into the station p..(mad). He'd had it out with his next-door neighbor the night before, and was still stewing over the incident.

He and Steve used to go to games a lot, and they'd spent plenty of time in fields upstate hunting over the years. That was all history, now.

Steve had gotten pulled over for a minor traffic beef the previous morning, and was unexpectedly told that he had dozens of unpaid parking tickets. The officers couldn't let him go until they got it all straightened out. Steve reluctantly agreed to ride downtown with them, knowing that it was some bullshit glitch.

He sat around on his ass for a couple of hours, but finally, after they'd run his information through the system eight or nine ways, they admitted that they had the wrong guy. Same first and last name, same middle initial, etc. They apologized for the foulup, and drove him back to his car.

He went straight to work, and stayed over to make up for the wasted time.

When he got home, he found that his side door had been bashed-in. Fearing the worst until he found a note from his wife, he then raced downstairs to check out his gun safe. It was ruined. And his prized pair of over-and-unders, the Perazzi and the Browning, were gone.

On the front of what remained of the safe's door was a summons to appear in court. The firearms had been confiscated because he'd failed to re-register them as required under a new law passed a few months before.

So he charged over and confronted Franklin, and the screaming went on for almost an hour. Bob took it stoically, like the professional he prided himself on being. Over and over again, Bob emphasized that Steve should be thanking his lucky stars that the seizure took place under the new rules set down by the embattled Mayor, who wanted to cut down on negative headlines by reducing direct confrontations between the police and voters. Seriously, would Steve have preferred a night raid, with his wife and daughter at home? The Misdirection Detainment program was a perfect way to get at grow lamps, computer hard drives, guns, and the rest without the risk of generating unfortunate accidents. (Bob did not add, "or embarassing video," but WebCams were becoming extremely popular home appliances, and you never knew where they could be hidden.) Finally, exhausted and shaky, his neighbor went home.

Bob had gone on his share of raids in the old days, and still had nightmares about the old hillbilly bat who thought that she should've been able to keep her beat Remington slide-action .22 in her kitchen cabinet because her Daddy had always done it that way back on the farm. Bob froze on the trigger when she started yanking the rifle out, but Phillips dumped half a magazine from his MP5 into her, knocking her out of her wig.

After four or five shots of bourbon at the cop bar by the precinct house, after the back-slappers finished sharing in his new celebrity and went away, Bob got the chance to ask Phillips why he'd been so cool under stress.

"Well, Linda's coming up due with another boy, and my first kid is already seeing the orthodontist. You're a single guy, so you probably stopped listening after hearing that Compliance Patrol gets you a fatter paycheck -- but they also bump the caps on your Health bennies way up.

"I guess I can kinda feel a little sorry for the b...(witch), 'cause maybe she didn't know the drill. But I can't afford to get put back on wuss duty.

"If we'd left her standing after she pointed a gun at us, there woulda been hell to pay. Like they keep saying, the Patrol can't work if we let perps f...(mess)  with us." Bob nodded, and had another drink.

At least all that was behind him now. Eighteen months back during a porn sweep, which were conducted hot and heavy for a while after Hatch got elected in '04, one of his fellow officers caught a glimpse of him down through the banister on a staircase. Mistaking Franklin's black Nomex balaclava for nappy hair, the guy let off a 12-gauge slug which wrecked Bob's left shoulder and clavicle without even penetrating his Kevlar vest. Two inches or so to the right and he would have been cored like an apple.

When he got out of the hospital, the department found him a new assignment. The chief always joked that Bob was built like a gorilla -- from the massive shoulders to hands that looked like bunches of bananas to the stumpy legs -- so they had him help keep prisoners in line. Brief but convincing physical intimidation right up front really cut down on doubletalk and acting-out.

After checking with the guy at the front desk, Bob walked to the back of the building, negotiated three pairs of gates, pushed through the big swinging doors, and looked around. It was going to be a long one. Small rolling protests over the Colombian War had been flaring up again, and several vanloads of college kids and Presbyterians and old hippies had to be inspected for contraband as the last step in their processing. Dozens of 'em were cable-tied face down on gurneys, half-naked.

Bob "Fickle Finger" Franklin slipped the first of what would be many latex gloves over his right hand, and bent down to his work.

Thioridazine - One of many med's used to work with paranoia.  With a Red Stripe, possibly great kicker to a Hazarita.

I don't know if John is at point "A" and is wanting to take his point to "B" .. but in his efforts and in my opinion, he can take the scenic over-kill drive to "Z".  My critique ... and I am not a great judge ... is that he comes off as paranoid in trying to get people to see his point of view.  Then again, WE need to remember that one man's paranoia is another man's passion.   Who among us doesn't like to take a swipe or two at a windmill?  All the same, while I will usually disagree with what he says and how he may say it ... it does cause me to reflect.  Which is the precise point of intellectual discourse.

M'ette's original point is true. Very, very true and to this, should not be stretched into something other than remembering the "Golden Rule".  To this, I am the most guilty because of my genetic defect of being a sincere prick.  M'ette's comments are a great reminder to me in my efforts to wax and post.

My God John.... You need to get out and socialize more..  :D
You can sure take a piece of sand and turn it into a full blown tornado... ::)
You remind me of the old men who used to set at the barber shop and by taking one single thing that someone said.. run all over town and twist it and turn it until the whole original meaning of the original sentence was lost.

I really am not going to waste my breath talking or responding to you any more..it is more than obvious that you do not and are not going to listen to anything but your continuing repetitive and twisted rhetoric.

As far as my "friend".. he just happens to be a retired Marine.. and retired cop..and works very strongly in favor for our 2nd amendment rights. So your flippant little remark was totally uncalled for.
And Ksail... thanks. And just because I am a responsible grown adult.. I STILL appreciate what you said..  ;)

Amazingly John.. with all of your talk and insults towards me you don't even begin to upset me... sorry if that didn't go as planned.
You don't exasperate me... you just flat out are exhausting. ..You really are a card to draw too.........

Thanks to those who read the original post...thought about it..tucked it on the shelf with all the other inconsequential things and moved on with your life.

I really don't know HOW this simple thread got so strung out . For me allowing it to crescendo at this level. .I apologize to everyone. As for my own knee jerk responses? once again.. I'm sorry.
John.. The last few days have been a bit personally stressed ( nothing to do with this site) so my nice even-temperament
( ? do I have that??  ;D ) was a bit out of sorts...and even though I think you were a bit over the edge with me.. I shouldn't have counter-acted.  ..but on the other hand.. I was the same with you... so it was a nip and nip sort of deal...
I actually went into your website and looked and read. It is very well put together and well written. I have sense modified my post with the little dig that was attached to it. When I go into that 'mode" I usually am not very proud of myself in the end.

We ... as gun owners and 2nd amendment supporters cannot let dumb little things like this  separate us in any capacity or way.
I have always said that we here in Down range are like family. Family argues and slams doors..and spouts & jabs sometimes. ..but eventually we come out and set down at the supper table and all eat together..sharing our lives.

This is what needs to be done here...

John.. Even though we don't see eye to eye on a few things I hope that you will feel free to continue to post in Down Range. You have been a family member and your posts have been informative and ...well........'original'  LOL

( oh yea.. I HAVE to add this cause it is just my "personality"... ; ;) :D

No one put me up to writing this..Marshal is busy today.. haven't talked to Michael all week..No phone calls .. no e-mails....
In fact.. I am getting ready to go grab my 4 wheeler.. my pistol.. my fishing pole and get the hell out of town for a bit..
And I didn't want this hanging on my mind all day and interfering with my fishin'..  ;D

I'm outta here guys.. Have a great rest of the weekend.  :)
