Title: 21 Year Drought Has Ended
Post by: PegLeg45 on November 30, 2016, 11:22:44 AM
The last time I killed a deer was Thanksgiving 1995....then life, work, life, marriage, life, etc took precedent. I went off and on each season and then quit after my bike crash. I started back trying to hunt some five or so years ago, but physical limitations and losing hunting rights (the land was sold) on land I'd hunted for years greatly restricted the potential to get one.

My younger son took me a few weeks ago to some land he is leasing from his m-i-l. He set me up in a ground blind but I saw nothing. He took me to the same spot this morning and I got a nice buck.

Good for you..

I've cooked plenty.....just that none of it was shot by me.

My son usually kills multiple deer per year, and my wife usually gets at least one or more each year (heck, once she killed two with one shot).

This one had a nice set of backstraps.....and I already have plans for it (and it involves bacon).  ;D

Nice to get out with your son and to get back in the hunt. But there's no picture....

Had to get one off the wife's phone.

I am planning on getting a turkey on the property some time this month.

I haven't hunted whitetail since about 73.  Pretty sure I won't FU a decent piece of venison, though!  LOL

Since way before the average American knew anything about Duck Dynasty....  ;D

The last time my face was completely clean shaven was in the fall of 2003....and then it was only because I was in the ICU and they shaved me when I couldn't do anything about it.

I think I got you both beat on the gray.  :o

Majer, if it hadn't been for that one stint in the hospital, my "facial hair of some type" date would go back into the early 90's.....and it was much darker in color then too.  ;D

Backstraps to beards ? Yeah, it's what we do. LOL
I've had a mustache since the I started shaving in the 70's, the beard comes and goes with te seasons for the last 4 or 5 years.

I use a straight, so my cost for saving is only about $20 a year.  The time thing does suck.

I don't trust ANY ONE to put a straight razor against my throat, including, maybe especially, me.  LOL

Grew my beard on a two week canoe trip in Ontario in the summer of 1975 and have had it since then.

Its honestly not that hard. The prep and strecthing the skin makes it closer.  For me it was a $ deal.  At $4 a blade that only lasted 2 days. It did not take long to figure out that Iwould make my money back in less then a year.

Besides I like keeping tools sharp.

Freaks the little women out too this day.  Yet shr works with blades all day long.

For about $150 you cqn get everything you need.

The photo attached is later on Wednesday.

My son had one already de-boned from the previous week that was ready to grind. He had just finished cubing some steak and was grinding the rest into burger. We went in together and bought some good equipment to do our own. A neighbor let him borrow some equipment last year to see if he wanted to try processing his own meat and it turned out great.....it was the best sausage I've had.

The guy that was doing ours did good work, but at $75 for just a burger grind and cubing per deer....add sausage and it went up to $110....... plus gas to drive three counties over twice....it could get costly if he had a good year.

It cost us about $20 per deer in fat to do burger and pork to do sausage (including seasonings and casings).

He's already done enough this year to cover the cost of the equipment.

I get to do mine next week.

no jerky  :-[ :'(

i have had an entire deer turned in to jerk more then once    ;D

never lasts 2 weeks and you will be amazed at how many "hunting buddies"  come out of the wood work when they find out you have jerky.

I've never owned a straight razor but once shaved with a very sharp pocket knife. It was a rough job and I had to go over it with a razor to clean it up. I don't shave very often and the free sample razors I got in the mail years ago will likely last me the rest of my life.

The old Africa hands, like Selous, talk about the need for fat. They could feed themselves and their followers on antelope type meat, but they had to have fat with it .
To solve the problem they would shoot a hippo, giraffe, or wart hog and render down enough fat for a while.
I found it odd that the writers in the American West lie Wm. F. Drannan, and Billy Dixon didn't mention the same problem.

I used a Bic lighter to shave in boot camp!

[emoji3]

Couldn't grow a beard till about 35.  The last few years I've been using these.  Good blade, half the cost, nice shave and even the wife uses em on her legs and bits..

Gotta have some fat....... it really doesn't take much, but it makes a world of difference.

Plus, it helps bind the lean venison together when it's ground up for burger or sausage.  ;D

And taste....mustn't forget TASTE!!
Makes great chili and spaghetti sauce.

If you haven't tried venison stroganoff you really should. It's great over noodles but would likely taste good with rice too.

When my dad had someone else process his deer he got steaks and chops and whatever was left was ground. My mom would mix the ground venison with ground pork to get some fat in it. I don't remember how it tasted that way but it couldn't be too bad.

I've always mixed my ground venison with either some suet or some plain ground pork.  You don't want sausage as the herbs and spices interfere with the lovely flavor of the venison.  But, a little extra fat helps transfer the flavor of the deer and improves it immeasurably.

Wild boar responds in similar fashion.  Some added ground domestic pork or some suet lets the flavor come through.

My uncle and I just got through processing two deer. We came out with 70lbs of burger with 10% fat  and four foot pieces of backstraps.

We use the ground venison in everything. It makes great burgers, and even in hamburger helper and sloppy Joes. I've even used in stir-fry with mushrooms, onions, and peppers.

re: shaving with straight razor... I made a 2 week TDY to the 6924th at Ramasun Station, Thailand in late 72, and somehow didn't pack a razor... across the street was a papa san that worked as a barber... can of shaving cream, straight razor ,sitting in a chair on the street...the old guy would go back inside every dozen strokes or so and take a hit on a bong....you wanted to get there before noon... after two successful shaves, I got a razor as soon as I could get to the BX

I'm a little late, sorry, but congratulations Peg on ending the drought.

Now to the beard part of the thread.  Shaved the day of the prom in 1973.  Was shaved off very briefly a couple of time shortly after that.  Once for a job, the other for a girl.  Neither one worked out.  My own mother told me to grow it back.  My wife never saw me without it and neither have my kids.  Had to trim it close for a respirator fit test for work a few weeks ago, but I still have it.
