Title: Range Bag Ideas & Selections....
Post by: Rastus on July 04, 2018, 12:00:46 PM
What do you guys like for a range bag and what do you carry in it?  I like one around 10" in height, 18" long and around 8" wide.

I have the Midway Compeition one about the size you said.   One pocket is for first aid and I painted a red cross on it, not so much for me but for anyone else who's looking for supplies.  One end has my various shooting glasses and the other has safety flags, spring clips for targets, etc.  The other half pocket is where all my tools are.  The large side for magazines is painted with an "S" so I can pick mine our from others.  I use individual pistol bags for each gun in the middle, plus all my range notes.

I ALSO HAVE:   A Home Depot tool carrier.   For practice the guns go in the big bag and all the ammo, magazines and speedloaders go in this tool carrier.   For a Glock match, one gun, no backup, no tools and no holster, then this is all I carry.

That tool carrier is a great idea.  I'm going to have to really ponder that and quit trying to do everything with one bag.

I use a maxpedition jumbo versipack for a couple pistols, half dozen mags and 4 boxes of ammo and a Lula loader. This works great. I use a cheap duffel to haul more ammo if needed. If I had a bigger range bag I would spend too much time at the range each trip.

I use this. It holds a lot of ammo, eyes, ears, magazines. Gun travels in holster or clamshell.

I have multiple styles and sizes. I think I collect bags like Alf collects flashlights (what am I saying, I have flashlights too.....it's a sickness).

The wife bought me the one linked below (the larger one in the video) for Christmas a few years ago. It has a hard case that fits in a side compartment and plenty of room for gear. There are several companies with similar style bags, but I like this one fairly well.

First I don't have EVERY model Streamlight makes.  And secondly, I define it as the new normal.  The rest of you are weirdos.

my range bag is probably different from most of you, as mine is clipped to my baby stroller gun cart with 4 aluminum snap links, and partially seated over the axle...it is currently an NRA promo that has circumference straps around the bottom, but occasionally is a Home Depot tool bag...

contents...200 rounds of 9mm in gallon zip loc bags... 3, 32 round +5 magazines, 3, 18 round magazines, mag loader, box factory 147, ear plugs, Mechanic's Gloves, chamber flags, T handle and chamber brush, M16 cleaning kit, bug juice, spare 2032 batteries and AR9 firing pin, lens cloth, Leatherman AR tool, Phillips, straight blade combo screwdriver, mag carrier, couple 2x2 non adherent gauze and roll of stretch self adherent tape

trauma kit... CAT tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, chest seal, 2 Israeli bandages, NPA, Kerlix gauze, Kerlix roll, self adherent stretch tape, petroleum gauze

I have three different style bags:

1.  Soft tool bag that I use for all my first aid supplies;

2.  Three S&W range bags (the ones you get free ... you pay a few hundred for and they give you a free handgun with it);

3.  Three slightly smaller cheap bags with no outer or inner pockets.

I stock my S&W bags for each of the games I like to play.  One will have everything I need for Cowboy, one will be all set for USPSA, and one for bullseye.

The green bags are used for extra ammunition or misc. supplies that don't fit in the others.

Depending on the time of year some bags will be switched out.  In the winter I don't shoot SASS, so that bag will be switched to smallbore.

I have learned that it is much easier to find time for shooting if I am organized and ready.  By having the bags all set up, I can grab and go.  When I get home from a time of shooting, I try to do all restocking, repair, etc. within 48hrs.  By having multiple stocked and staged bags I have learned that I can be prepared and arrive at the range with every possible need - Ear plugs, muffs, gloves, batteries, timers, recorded range commands, targets, squib rods, tools, fiber optic rods, safety glasses, eye shades, ...

I wish I could give better descriptions and sizes, but I have not seen my bags in three months.  I can't wait to get my FOID card, so I can be reunited with my toys.

I really like that idea.  In fact, all of the ideas.

The thing I've been doing that is wrong is trying to do it all with one bag with the exception of my blowout kit which is:

I'm going to have to look at that Louie's lunch box or similar for an ammo carrier.  I clearly need to make a decision on multiple bags and their purposes....

I use a cheap duffel bag with a solid but flexible reinforced bottom. The main compartment holds a couple of pistols in soft cases, ammo, paper targets, and a staple gun for hanging targets on the wooden backboard at an outdoor range. The side pocket holds a cleaning kit if I'm in a mood to take it. One end is full of foam earplugs. The other end is the "mystery pocket". I can't remember what I had in there the last time. At least one pair of safety glasses goes somewhere in the bag.

I've got 2 MidwayUSA bags, but I rarely use the big one anymore, it's actually siting downstairs covered in various forms of dust - saw- and other. I do manage to fit everything into the medium sized bag, even when shooting multiple guns.

I did take a permanent marker and tone down the logo somewhat - seriously dislike a neon billboard on the side of a gun bag!
