Title: Old TV
Post by: MikeBjerum on March 27, 2020, 08:03:53 AM
Not because of the COVID-19, but just a recent pattern.  I get up early, 03:00, to get ready for my day.  Having grown up as a latch key kid, I have always had a TV on in the house to simulate another person.

I don't know how many of you have ever watched METV.  I came across it a couple years ago, and it is mostly old shows. A lot of old westerns, cops, and Perry Mason.  I have been watching Highway Patrol early morning while checking emails and reports before heading to work, and in the afternoon, after work, Adam 12.

I saw this first on Highway Patrol, and puzzled over it, and then I noticed it on Adam 12.

When I first started reading the article I was thinking it was a retention device.  Then I started questioning that, and later in the article it confirms my questioning - A flaw that would cause you to actually lose the gun easily.  That, and, Serpa is the first patent to have a built in AD issue.

1. I LOVE METV but can't get it now due to AT&T.
2. I have seen that holster on shows of that time frame and I remember on 1 episode of Adam-12 they actually explained how it "worked". It did not look safe to me, at least not by today's standards. Neet to watch and at least they took time to try to be accurate regarding what was then cutting edge technology.

I've been watching METV for a while.  Also the cheesy Sci-fi channel Comet.  There is Grit for westerns and Laffs for things like Night Court and that Tim Taylor tool guy.  All free TV on an antenna.  Plus more out there on the antenna for nothing.  No cable/satellite for me....the wife has Netflix which I use and I get video with Amazon Prime for nothing.  But the regular old antenna works just great for me.

Jack Webb was a stickler, down right anal, about authenticity in his shows.  He was the force behind Dragnet and Adam 12, and influenced Emergency.  Steven J. Cannell was also involved in them, and was from the same cloth as Webb.

While they can get a bit cheesy, they are products of the 60's and 70's.  That said, we need to remember what the technology was (remember Highway Patrol and Dragnet - Asking if they could use the person's phone to call in?) at that time, and if you pay attention, you sometimes are surprised they were able to push some content through.

Webb also had hidden statements in his productions.  I haven't caught anything I would call anti-gun, but he had a lot of drug education, use of social counseling to solve family issues, and he would make sure to show officers taking off their seatbelts as they were getting out of their cars.

I enjoyed all of Jack Webb's shows but one of my favorite bits was this one from Johnny Carson.

We bought a "smart" Roku TV for cheap back in December and I downloaded a bunch of free TV apps on it. Some of them also live stream current stuff. There's plenty of the old stuff on many of those channels. If you don't have the TV, most will play on your phone as well or you can buy a google chromecast for $35 and use your phone as a hot-spot (if equipped). My three most used of the free ones are PlutoTv, Tubi, and Crackle. Crackle has more current movies but Pluto has better live streaming movies.
