Title: 44 magnum Ruger #1
Post by: JeffRosen on November 28, 2020, 06:45:09 PM
I have been having great fun with 240 grain factory and reload ammunition.
I understand the rifling twist is one in sixteen, and as such can shoot heavier bullets.
Lee manual #2 has various loads for jacketed to 300 grain, and lead to 350 grain.
I have limited powders (2400, Acc#7).
Does anybody have a fullproof reload for any heavy bullets?

(If you don't want to give specifics, a powder recommendation will help.)

((By the way, I have been using large rifle primers in this 44 magnum rifle and they work.  The did NOT work in a S&W revolver.  No issues just no ignition))

Curious, John, I thought LRP were taller then LPP.  Are they flush with the head when you seat them?

<this from memory so I could be wrong>

On the flip side I use LPP with my .458SOCOM.

I did a very quick look in one of my reference books.  The LRP is taller than the LPP, so getting flush could be an issue.  Another thing mentioned is that the rifle primer has a heavier cup, and that might be why they work in the rifle but not the revolver (not a strong enough hammer spring to ignite).

I use the load below in an integrally suppressed Ruger 77/44.

Hornady XTP 300 grn.
H110 15.5 grains

That sounds like a good 2-leged varmint gun. ;)

More quiet than a pellet gun....

Jeff what did you end up with for a load?

2400 with rifle primer.  In a Ruger #1 RIFLE.
Powder is as listed in the Lee Manual using Lee dipper.
I am at the low end of the reloading spectrum.
