Charles Daily tactical pump question
« on: January 28, 2008, 04:48:42 PM »
I recently purchased a Charles Daily 12 gauge Tactical Pump shotgun. The specs listed it as being a 5+1 using 2 3/4" shells, but all I can manage to get in the "tube" are two shells, making it a 2+1 gun. Can anyone offer any advice or help?

I'm assuming you removed the magazine nut at the end, and removed the field restrictor plug???

Do I need a special tool to get the nut off? I took the gun apart as much as I could, but could not get the plug out. Being new to this type of gun, I wasn't sure how much I could damage it by messing with it.

The manual should show you pretty well what to do.  I don't own a Daly pump, but from what I remember from a friend it is pretty much like all the rest.  The nut on the muzzle end of the magazine tube should be hand tight, and when you remove it the barrel will slide off easily (barrel usually does not need to come off for this, but it will be loose and removing it will get it out of the way).  The part I cant remember is if there is a snap ring holding the big spring in.  If there is no snap ring, the spring will let you know when you have the nut unthreaded.  If there is a snap ring you will need to remove that to get the spring and plug out.

Check out the book for sure, and if you are not sure, the dealer will take you through step-by-step of anything you need to not only do this but also anything else you might need to know.

Got the field restrictor plug out. It took up space for the additional three shells. Silly question, but why do they install it in the first place?

According to an article I read many years ago - It is a legal thing.  Gun manufacturers found they needed to provide them to avoid lawsuits by hunters that did not put one in.  They then found that if they did not install it they could still be sued.  I'm just glad they did not drop the mag capacity to two to keep us from taking them out ... but that may be coming yet.

The first time I went waterfowl hunting with my old Ithica 37 (if I remember correctly it was 1972) I needed a plug, so I quickly cut a pencil with my pocket knife and stuck that in there.  Good thing I did, because we got checked that day.  I can still remember the Conservation laughing at me (a 14 year old on my first hunt without dad) and saying something like he wished he had a nickel for every weird plug he'd seen in those early years of the rule.

Glad you got it out ... have fun!

I kind of figured it was a legal thing. It seems like you can't turn around anymore and get sued for something, and unfortunately, it's the stupidest and most frivolous cases that win the biggest awards.
