WWI Bayonet

My BIL came over the other day and handed me a bayonet thinking that is was Prussian.

He was right!  After a few clicks of the clicky thing I was able to determine that is was a Prussian bayonet from a Mauser M98, circa 1903-1918.  His father had acquired it years ago from a friend and Rich has had it wrapped in plastic and stored for thirty years or so.

It was in surprisingly good condition with leather encased scabbard and the Simson Suhl name clearly visible on the blade.  The serial number and makers mark very clearly on the hilt.  Dull as a butter knife but very little corrosion.  He wanted to try and clean it up a bit but I suggested he oil it up and keep it just as it looks today!

I sent him on his way with a pre-oiled Remington wipe and a few desiccant packs (thanks Peg for the idea)!  I'll post a picture when he sends it to me...

Cool history lesson!

DO NOT "CLEAN IT UP".
If it's in good condition with no rust cleaning off the patina will destroy any collector value it has.

That's what I told him!  He's going to leave it alone...
